Cops May Get Assault Weapons in Chicagostan
PajamasMedia ^ | 5/3/08 | Bob Owens

Posted on 05/03/2008 5:01:20 PM PDT by Dawnsblood

Fifty-four shootings in two weekends. Shot-up bodies recovered in groups of three and five. Is this Ramadi? Basra? No.

Welcome to Chicago.

After a recent outbreak of gun-related violence, Mayor Richard Daley is now pushed into supporting a plan by new Police Superintendent Jody Weis to arm 13,000 Chicago police officers with assault rifles. Depending on how many weapons are eventually deployed, this may develop into the largest militarization of police patrol officers in United States history. If the department arms 10,000 of their officers with M4s, the police will have 9,900 more assault rifles in Chicago than the U.S. Marines presently have in Fallujah, Iraq.

The plan is still in preliminary stages and the cost and logistics of supplying the rifles, associated magazines, optics, accessories, and ammunition are still up in the air. Also undefined is how the Chicago PD is going to be able to train their officers to use their new weapons in an urban environment without becoming a greater threat to civilians than the city’s criminal element.

The rifle tentatively chosen for deployment is a semi-automatic version of the M4 carbine. The M4 is a more compact variant of the M16 rifle used by the American military since the Vietnam War era. The M4 features a shorter barrel (14.5 inches versus 20 inches for the M16) and a multi-position collapsible stock. Many companies make variants of the M4, and the Chicago PD should be able to obtain M4-type rifles for between $600 and $1,100 per unit, depending upon manufacturer and specifications. Modern military variants of the M4 rarely use iron sights as their primary way of aiming the weapon, and instead use various optical sights, which enable soldiers to acquire their targets more quickly.

I’m surprised the he didn’t mention that it won’t be long before criminals get their hands on these guns, either through corruption or by swiping them.

Why hasn't Murtha demanded that we redeploy the police to New Jersey? If it was good enough for Iraq, it should be good enough for Chicago!

BTW, isn't it nice that rat ba5t@rd has shut the hell up about Iraq? Well, except for slandering our Marines, calling them cold blooded murderers and all.

They’ll look really stylish and cool with those weapons, and the rounds will go through houses and otherwise uninvolved citizens very nicely. ;-)

They’ll have some problems with them due to lack of training (whacking off whole magazines without hitting bad guys) and lack of suitability around wood-constructed houses and short-range firefights, IMO. Otherwise, they’re pretty good weapons for having around reinforced concrete buildings and longer fields of fire.

Chicago, where law-abiding American citizens are prohibited by law from owning handguns, and the ownership of long guns is severely restricted. Chicago, which controls the state of Illinois, is responsible for Illinois being only one of two states in the United States to ban CCW. Chicago, the home of moonbat gun-grabbing governor Rod Blogoevich, who is so astonishingly ignorant of firearms that he is on record as saying that a .50 caliber cartridge is the size of a ketchup bottle, and that single-shot .50 rifles shoot down aircraft (apparently unaware that there is no such downing of an aircraft on record). Chicago (well, Chicago and its suburb Park Ridge), the home of two of the biggest anti-gun politicians in American history, one of whom will be the Democratic nominee for presdient of the united States. The Chicago that every few years is ranked as the murder capital of the United States.

That Chicago.

The rifle tentatively chosen for deployment is a semi-automatic version of the M4 carbine.

Doesn't the "M" stand for 'military'? Are we not arming a 'standing army'?

Each and every police force ought to be issued a .40 cal. for defense and personal use while on duty or off, while each and every citizen ought to be free to 'keep and bear' whatever the hell they wish.

Banning arms (Chicago) among idividuals is what has led to these statistics and no police force (even one imitating an Army platoon) will put a stop to it.

It dosen't "take a village", it takes indivuals. It doesn't take a village army, it takes armed individuals. Our country was founded on individual rights- not a "collective", nor "village", and not even a homeowner's association.

"We The People" has been so hosed by the collectivists among us. They are traitors and guilty of acts against our government- one and all. The bulk of the thugs causing these deaths would have been taken-out by up-standing citizens in a 'real' world after their first atempted break-in, car jacking, rape, etc. They want to solve the shooting problems in Chicago, they need to arm citizens as per the 2nd ammendment.

Or,they could let the citizenry arm themselves as recognized in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution.

It amazes me that the gun grabbers never make the connection between draconian gun control and increased violent crime. They need to be reminded that an armed society is a polite society.

It’s in the tagline...

I would trust Dick Cheney’s shooting (even after the quail hunting incident a couple of years ago) over that of many Chicago cops. I really wonder how often some of them get to a range. How does an M4 work with a double chin?

Considering the bunch of enviro-weenies running the city, will they be using the tungsten-nylon bullets the military is using to reduce lead pollution?

All I need is the accessories.

I watched Windtalkers last night. 'Joe' used his Thompson quite a bit. Sometimes even shooting after the bullets had run out in the stick magazine that Hollywood had given him.

God blessed the US of A when he gave us Mr. Thompson and Mr. Browning. And Mr. Eugene Stoner.

I just don't get the connection. How does up-arming the cops translate into fewer shootings? Did the cops lose some gunfights? Are they running away from situations where victims could have been saved if the cops were better armed?

This just doesn't make sense.

I wrote that with around 10,000 rounds of experience from a few years of range rotations in mind (sometimes 20 hours straight with various small arms and demo and police ranges later as a cop-civilian). Police could do well with semi-autos firing hollow points in US neighborhoods, given enough range time to...[sniff, sob, waaaaa] waste a few of those precious calories.

Agreed. In built-up, bunched-up places like Chicago, pistols are most often better. They’re just wanting cool-looking, new toys (been there, in a faraway proxy of the Chicago area, and the organized crime of public officials included connections to the same in the Chicago area).

Oh my! Semi-auto M4's in Chicago?

But wait a minute - this is the same PD that deployed M63 Stoner systems during the riots back some 4 decades ago... Why is arming the PD with M4's even an issue? Because somewhere along the way, someone decided that it wouldn't be politically expedient if an officer was allowed to defend himself with the equal amount of firepower as that which he faced.

If the situation calls for it, the officer should be properly equipped. I'm surprised it has taken this long to get that department (as a whole - I'm sure the officers have been wanting this for some time now) up to speed in the "never bring a pistol to a rifle battle" situation. Stay safe, and finish your shift...

This is magical, superstitious thinking. The concept that a gangbanger with an “AK” can't be taken down by cops with handguns and shotguns is straight out of animistic religion.

Someone feels the cops need stronger juju or anima or Gris Gris than the gangbangers, because a kid with an SKS is immune to police bullets unless the police bullets come from an equal or stronger talisman.

The long gun (OK, carbine) will be locked in the cruiser with an electric lock when the officer gets out to see what's up. He'll have his Glock and a radio with him.

Unless the cops are to carry the “assault rifles” all the time?

We will soon have cities patrolled by heavily armed troops. I've been in Mexico, Bolivia, and Paraguay where it is very common to encounter cops, Federales, and even army with auto weapons and grenades.

It's for the children.

You have to realize that in the last 3 weeks the Chicago PD has had to deal with the shooting deaths of over 30 people, 5 of which were found in the same house.

Toss in the fact that CPD had to shoot and kill a mountain lion on the northwest side less than 10 days ago, and you can easily see why they need to be issued these weapons.

You read that right, a real live no crap mountain lion was roaming the north side of the City. The cops fired over 50 rounds in order to kill it. Since then there have been 2 other sightings of large cats inside the city limits.

Personally I think this is about as stupid as it gets. Most CPD officers can barely qualify with their sidearms, let alone an M-4.

Street cops should be issued a reliable lethal enough sidearm, and a 12 gauge shotgun. I can see a few of these weapons being available to Supervisors, but 10,000 of them is insane.

Although it would be a hoot if our soon to be indicted Gov. Blago were to have to go begging to Rock River Arms, a company he'd happily put out of business, in order to buy these.

"The concept that a gangbanger with an “AK” can't be taken down by cops with handguns and shotguns is straight out of animistic religion."

In the Chicago scenario (likely short distances, wood buildings,...) with the training time available, shotguns could work much better. Rifles are sometimes better for sheriff's departments and highway patrolmen in rural areas. ...and special instances in cities (re. snipers in concrete positions).

. . . in the last 3 weeks the Chicago PD has had to deal with the shooting deaths of over 30 people . . .

This is what happens when you turn the mayor's office into a family business and have a federal prosecutor like Patrick Fitzgerald who's too busy chasing the President and Vice President to bother chasing the gangs.

We have 54 shootings over two weekends but hey -- gotta love that Millennium Park, and Scooter Libby (that old reprobate) almost went to jail. Betcha those street gangs are quaking in their high-priced sneakers.

A point commonly missed in ‘assault weapon’ terminology. The word ‘STYLE’ was omitted from the title of this piece by its author as seems to be universally done. The M4 as a ‘semi-auto’ provides no more firepower than a semi-auto pistol..it can have a magazine load greater than a pistol. The M4, issued as a semi-auto, is not a military capable weapon. The M4, issued as a semi-auto, is an ‘ASSAULT STYLE’ weapon, without actual assault capable firepower. The cops have essentially no more firepower than they had before, and, their pistols may actually be more effective now in an urban environment. The M4 as a semi auto only means that the barrel is longer than their pistols, and there is a stock provided....the M4 still only issues one shot per trigger pull, just as their pistols. It is just something bigger to carry around and maybe scare people with....criminals will not be intimidated, especially those who actually have ASSAULT CAPABLE AUTOMATIC weapons. In short, ALL semi-auto only capable weapons are NOT military assault category weapons.

I hope the time does not come when actual assault weapons are required for police use...by the time that such a policy is initiated will be a time when chaos is generalized in our cities. We are not quite their yet.

You mentioned city and state cronies, but don't forget Cook “Crook” County Commissioner Larry Suffredin!

Larry Suffredin, has a long history of anti-gun activity, including serving as a board member of the rabidly anti-gun Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence since 1981.

Suffredin sponsored the Cook County ban on certain semi-automatic firearms in 2006, and has been an avid supporter of recent efforts to ban virtually all firearms and ammunition in Cook County, as well as to eliminate virtually all licensed gun dealers in the county. In 2006, Commissioner Suffredin received an award from the Brady Campaign for his long history of anti-gun efforts.

Commissioner Suffredin launched television ads touting his anti-gun credentials, including his claim that he would shut down all gun stores.
