The US military is drawing up plans for a surgical strike against an insurgent training camp inside Iran if Republican Guards continue with attempts to destabilise Iraq, western intelligence sources said last week. One source said the Americans were growing increasingly angry at the involvement of the Guards special-operations Quds force inside Iraq, training Shiite militias and smuggling weapons into the country.
Despite a belligerent stance by Vice-President Dick Cheney, the administration has put plans for an attack on Irans nuclear facilities on the back burner since Robert Gates replaced Donald Rumsfeld as defence secretary in 2006, the sources said.
However, US commanders are increasingly concerned by Iranian interference in Iraq and are determined that recent successes by joint Iraqi and US forces in the southern port city of Basra should not be reversed by the Quds Force.
If the situation in Basra goes back to what it was like before, America is likely to blame Iran and carry out a surgical strike on a militant training camp across the border in Khuzestan, said one source, referring to a frontier province.
They acknowledged Iran was unlikely to cease involvement in Iraq and that, however limited a US attack might be, the fighting could escalate.
Although American defence chiefs are firmly opposed to any attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, they believe a raid on one of the camps training Shiite militiamen would deliver a powerful message to Tehran.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!
I’m glad they are being proactive in dealing with this problem immediately. /sarcasm
This is TOP SECRET STUFF — don’t let the NYT hear about this....it will end up all over the news!!!!
How is this statement to be interpreted, and is it correct?
Oh yeah. Same thing. Nevermind.
I would not trust anybody who cannot spell “defense” properly.
Wishful thinking/empty threats. Nobody with the b***s to do this has the authority to carry it out. Nobody.
Well... shout it from the rooftops.
“American defence chiefs are firmly opposed to any attack on Iranian nuclear facilities”
I’ll just bet they’re opposed !...This article is from the Times, a UK newspaper..Thank you London for keeping us Americans informed of our top command’s stupidity..we’ll return the favor if you ever need help finding a mole..
AND once again, the US is allowing an enemy force to have it’s own safe, secure sanctuary..Have they ever heard of Vietnam?..Laos?...Cambodia ?....the Ho Chi Minh Trail? Do we have to teach the kids in the Pentagon some history lessons?...or did they catch the Jimmah Cahtah Disease- mouth and brain are disconnected...
Hopefully our top military commanders aren’t that dumb and it’s really the Administration that is telling them what to say; and just maybe the Times is falling for the pablum put out by the American MSM: we’ll just use one tiny little bomb and drop it in the desert and we’ll drop it from Iraq airspace and let it drift just over the border...
Note to Military: Do it already !
They’re always “planning” this kind of stuff. When they actually do it, give me a call.
Our greatest secret weapon against Iran: the why-I-oughta. Our why-I-oughtas strike fear into the black hearts of our evil enemies. See them shaking, crying, stopping their attacks on our military personnel and shutting down their nuclear weapons facilities. Where would we be three years from now without our courageous leaders and their use of the devastating why-I-oughtas. And we wouldn’t have that most powerful weapon without Moe: the inventor.
Moe: Why I oughta! Come here!
Curly: Rrruuuuf! Take that! Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!
Moe: Why I oughta!
"Despite a belligerent stance by Vice-President Dick Cheney, the administration has put plans for an attack on Irans nuclear facilities on the back burner since Robert Gates replaced Donald Rumsfeld as defence secretary in 2006, the sources said."
I can understand why most things would go on the back burner...
...but not this thing!
Love the Cheney in Red graphic, Phil! lol
Whenever I see these kind of articles in the NYT or WP, I am reminded of Tinnerman’s book “Shadow Warriors.” Our government has a bad case of “rats” in the woodwork.
Beginning to draw up plans?
What the hell has taken so long for this administration to do ANYTHING to thwart Iran from KILLING AMERICAN troops in Iraq?
Why haven’t we made parts of their special little sandbox glow in the dark?
I’ve NO respect for Condi Rice and much of the rest of our foreign policy team.
Nuke Iran, fools.
I can’t even estimate the number of times I’ve posted comments begging the Bush Admin to take out the staging areas in Iran. I’d say we’re a bit late to the party.

The usual BS
Long, long overdue.
What a load of crap.
More impotent sabre-rattling. Our broken-dick gov’t has no intention of striking at these animals.
Iranian Control Room Workers await their destruction. "Bomb, bomb, Iran!"
Lol, funny one!!

Good post Phil
