The 'Race Speech' Revisited
JWR ^ | May 2, '08 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 05/04/2008 3:05:53 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

"I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother." - Barack Obama, March 18 Guess it's time to disown Granny. Obama's speech was not just believed. It was hailed, celebrated, canonized as the greatest pronouncement on race in America since Lincoln. It "should be required reading in classrooms across the country" for first-graders and college seniors, suggested the excitable Chris Matthews. Moral equivalence between Grandma and Wright is now inoperative. Apparently, Wright's latest comments were so shockingly "divisive and destructive" that Obama cited three reasons he had to denounce the man. What were Obama's three citations? Wright's claim that AIDS was invented by the U.S. government to commit genocide. His praise for Louis Farrakhan as a great man. And his blaming Sept. 11 on American "terrorism." But these comments were not new. They were the outrages that were seen on the Wright tapes seven weeks ago. Obama decided to cut Wright off not because his words or character had changed but his VENUE had - Wright chose to display his beliefs on national TV at the National Press Club.

Obama had the audacity to play on white guilt by suggesting that whites should be ashamed that they were ever surprised by Wright's remarks: "... Reverend Wright's sermons simply remind us of the old truism that the most segregated hour of American life occurs on Sunday morning." Obama's turned surprise about Wright into something to be counted AGAINST WHITES in that shameful, brilliantly executed, intellectually fraudulent speech in Philadelphia.

read the transcript of the speech, he did not disown the Rev...ever, he denounced the comments, same as he did in the first speech.

I guess his grandmother must be packing her bags right about now.

True.

And he did the same again today on Meet the Press - Obama Rehabilitation.

Ironically, on MTP he pulled Grandpa and Grandma out from under the bus — political expedience.

I thought the first time around they were only snippets taken out of context.

Howard Dean told Chris Wallace on Fox that the only the Republicans use race baiting “like Willie Horton.” I mean if I was Chris Wallace, I would have asked “what about the James Byrd ad in Texas?”

Dean also thinks that millions of Republicans turned their backs on their party to vote Democratic. Hello, Operation Chaos?

I would have eviscerated that idiot Dean. Thanks Chris, no softballs, but not good enough to expose Dean as the idiot he is and will always be.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) helps a resident of Kempton, Indiana, up a small hill during a visit to a house which his great great great grandfather built, in Kempton, Indiana May 3, 2008. The Indiana Presidential Primary will be held on May 6.

In a way he disowned both. He disowned Wright because during this speech he DID disown his grandmother. Called her a "typical white" woman who, in his mind, is racist.

Of course, in Barack's mind EVERYONE is a racist.

The media repeats Obama threw Rev under the bus and disowned him...he did not.

Saw the interview. Dean is a spinmeister. He said it would have taken another six minutes to put McCain's comments in context when in reality it was done by including the very next line.

What a loser.

And you raise a great point about the Byrd ad.

For Obama, instead of Yo Mama, the way he keeps throwing her under the bus and retrieving her from under the bus, it is YoYo Gram-Mama.

Somewhere after the Press Club Performance Obama said (approximately) "This is not the man I knew twenty years ago." Sounds pretty disown-ish to me.

In any case, if the media says he disowned him, then he disowned him. Surely you get how that works by now.

Keep in mind, however, that even Wright has taken what Obama has said as denunciation and distancing from not only the comments but the man. Wright just points out that it’s only politics and Obama doesn’t really mean it.

The Willie Horton ad/ issue was first run by none other than Al Gore, not that Dean even cares.

He lies as a matter of course. Whatever it takes to win. Lie, cheat, steal, demagogue ... How proud Democrats must be.

I heard Dean interviewd by Chris Wallace and he used the oldest trick in the book. When you are asked specific questions about an embarrassing subject - in this case, Wright and Obama - change the subject. Attack Bush and McCain rather than answer the question. Dr. Dean admits that he was a binge drinker for many years. I don’t think
he has that many brain cells left to destroy.

Right - can you imagine a conservative politician saying that someone was a “typical black?” They’d be accused of stereotyping, racism, and bigotry and hounded out of office in about 15 minutes!

We all know Obama is trying to separate himself from Wright and regain his phony image as a “trans-racial” candidate. But the FACTS are that he was in the congregation for 20 years, praised Wright publically and privately, had Wright marry himself and Michelle, baptize his children, took the title for his book (”The Audacity of Hope”) from one of Wright’s sermons, and at various times described him as his “mentor,” and close “friend.” To put this in context. it must be remembered that the National Journal said he was the MOST LIBERAL of all 100 senators - and that includes everyone from the socialist Bernie Sanders to Chuckie Schumer of New York. Is this the guy we want to be our next president? And, more important, will Americans fall for his line and vote for him out of a false sense of guilt - which he’s proved he’s very able to exploit and manipulate?
