Obama & Energy Politics --Dumb, and Dumber PDF E-mail
Written by Melanie Morgan

The polls are showing that despite the Reverand Wright's "God Damn America" scandal that has consumed the Obama campaign, his supporters are blowing past it.

In fact, the Senator is picking up in the tracking polls.

BUT.

There is another lurking issue that may provide some rocket fuel to Hillary's campaign. In Indiana this weekend, BHO scoffed at the fact that Mrs. Clinton (and Senator McCain) are advocating a suspension of the gasoline tax to help bring down prices during the summer time when they traditionally rise due to increased demand.

Senator Obama can take it from this California political watcher/activist who has seen years of political damage done to the California Democrat party because of it's unresponsiveness to rising gas prices, and the seeming inability of consumers to affect it. In fact, the issue helped pave the way for the Recall of former Governor Gray Davis.

Clinton/McCain are going to benefit from their support of gas tax reductions, if the two campaigns are smart enough to use it as a wedge issue.

Obama will be hurt as he continues to insist that it that a gas tax reduction is a shell-game. Ordinary folks don't really understand gas pricing politics, but they sure as hell understand the pain at the pump.

IF Senator McCain wants to really capitalize on the situation, one-upping Hillary, he should be advocating for the elimination of ethanol in gas supplies, and for federal legislation to rid the country of 'boutique' blends of gas that cause prices to jump, as well as food prices (ethanol.)

Ethanol is a giant fraud on the American public.

But it is making a lot of fat cat Democrats and Republicans rich.

Get rid of ethanol. Get rid of special blended gasoline. Even the liberal L.A. Times agrees.

Here in California, KSFO radio took the lead in  advocating for an end to MTBE, a blended gasoline oxygenate that has been linked to cancer. I personally testified before the California State Legislature twice on this subject.

After the ban took effect in our state, gas prices immediately went down, although it was temporary because the 'cornies' moved in quickly to take advantage of the federal and state regulations that legislate 'cleaner burning' gasoline.

Get it? Environmental regulations=higher prices in the market place.

Gas prices go down if ethanol is eliminated at the pump, (not to mention increasing food prices due to the shortages for corn) and federal regulations are revoked for blended gas supplies for different states.

The temporary band-aid for lower gas prices is eliminating the federal gas tax. Anytime you eliminate a tax, politically, good things happen.

In the long-term watch whomever advocates for these two common sense solutions to pick up voter support.

MTBE, ethanol and other politically motivated actions not only are bad for the environment but don't accomplish what the politicians promise. They just line pockets of those with full ones.

There are a lot of things wrong with Obama. Arguing against elimination of the federal gas tax is not one of them. That tax serves as a funding source for construction projects across the country. Suspending the tax means suspending the work, which means scaling back in the highway transportation infrastructure sector. Not a good idea.

Hillary is just pandering. McCain is showing his weakness as a candidate.

Obama has huge problems whihc will prevent him from being elected - but on this narrow issue, he’s right.

This is the only issue for which I can agree with BHO. While I hate these high prices at the pump no less than anyone else, I recognize this Fed Tax holiday as nothing more than a gimmick that would not be in play except that this is a Pres election year.

"That tax serves as a funding source for construction projects across the country. Suspending the tax means suspending the work, which means scaling back in the highway transportation infrastructure"

Yess and no. The problem is that a very large portion of the monies in the Highway Trust Fund are either re-allocated by Congress to pork projects and/or re-allocated by the states that receive the money to other purposes. This is why you periodically see bridges collapse, roads wash out etc. etc. and nobody has a good andwer as to why the maintenance/inspections weren't done properly.

The maintenance is just not done.

Doing away with ethanol., as well as the ground water poisoning additives for boutique fuels will significantly help the cost of gasoline.

I assume you believe in the SS Lockbox, and the tooth fairy. When will people understand that spending in DC has nothing to do with income, regardless of were it comes from. It doesn't matter if they have it they will spend it. Every dime we keep out of their hands the better, and who cares where it comes from.

There is a HUGE difference between McCain and Hillary on this. Hillary wants an windfall profits tax on the oil companies to fund it, while McCain hasn't said where the money is to come from.

A windfall profits tax is popular because stupid people think punishing the people who make gasoline and earn 10% on gross sales is a good thing. They also think it's less obscene for Washington to take their pump money than let the companies that actually produce fuels to have it so they can produce more.

I agree...do away with blends, but how about reducing the paper work necessary to build a power plant or refinery from 8+ years to a few months. How about telling the tree huggers to shut up so we can pursue deep water drilling in the Gulf and other off-shore sites. What are those idiots going to say when they can't drive to work and, if they could, it would be closed because there's no power to turn the lights on. I guess they'll jump on their snail darters and ride them to their nonexistent job.

She's wrong. The Californians were extremely pissed off at Gray Davis because his ineptitude of handling the rising prices of natural gas, not gasoline (which the article was about), which lead to relentless rolling gray-outs and overpaying for long-term Nat Gas contracts.

So get rid of domestic ethanol and send another 10% to middle oil producers. Makes sense to the middle east but I question the value to the US.

We get more crude oil from Saudi Arabia than Mexico. We get more crude oil from OPEC than Non-OPEC sources.

Iowa would retroactively withdraw it's delegates if that were to happen. After a first ballot, Iowa delegates be first off the Obama bandwagon.

You obviously have never been any kind of elected public official that has actually ever tried to do that! If you ever did, you'd instantly become overwhelmed by unwanted media pressure and militant agitators swarming your position and further feel withering pressure from your colleagues of all kinds. (plus an IRS audit and an elections commission audit of your campaign funds, etc., etc.)

What a sad state of reality. The problem is that just speaking the truth (politely) brings on the same reaction.
