Driver proposal stirs bias claims (...targets illegal immigrants, critics say.)
Denver Post ^ | 5-5-08 | Christopher N. Osher

Unlicensed drivers would see their cars impounded under a Denver ballot measure that opponents say targets illegal immigrants.

The proposed ordinance states: "Unlicensed drivers including illegal aliens are not eligible for auto insurance and pose a significant danger to the people of the city and county of Denver when driving and must be prevented from doing so in every way possible."

Backers have gathered enough signatures to have the item placed on the ballot in August should City Council members choose not to adopt it. At least one council member is opposed.

Bruce Wright, identified in documents submitted to the city as a petition organizer with the group Denver Future, denied that the effort targeted immigrants. He stressed that drunk drivers who have lost their licenses also would be affected.

"I don't think it's discrimination against Mexicans or Indians or people from Asia or Japan or anything like that," said Wright, 53, who said he doesn't own a car and lives in housing provided by the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. "But you don't belong behind a wheel if you don't carry insurance and you don't have a valid driver's license, period."

I'm sure proponents will say that too. That's why they want it passed.

This ordinance appears to target unlicensed drivers. If crimmigrants don’t want to have their car impounded, they should not drive.

Targets illegal immigrants? Hey, whatever we need to do to get them out of the country is okay with me.

I like this idea. I think that we should start impounding cars of unlicensed drivers in WA state.

Oh please. Every single one of our criminal laws directly targets the perpetrator of the crime. That's the whole point of having the laws. They also take away weapons that are used in the commission of crimes. This is no different.

Yeah, when the homeless folks start talking more sense than the politicians in office, you have to wonder...

It sounded to me like this Wright guy from the homeless shelter knows the people this ordinance would get off the road and is all for it. Doing the 12 steps.

"But you don't belong behind a wheel if you don't carry insurance and you don't have a valid driver's license, period."

Anyone can walk into an AAA office with a valid overseas license (excepting a handful of whack-job countries) and walk out with an international driving permit for about $12.

The fact that illegal immigrants do not want to get such a permit either means (a)they are unqualified to drive because they lack a license from their home county, (b)they don't give a damn about driving legally or (c)they don't wish to disclose their true identities.

In any case, it makes them unqualified to be on our roads.

Has anyone read a Mexican highway map lately where it explains the penalty for driving there without a valid license or insurance? They certainly aren't shy about advertising and enforcing their laws, are they?

Councilman Doug Linkhart said the proposal is aimed at intimidating illegal immigrants, who aren't allowed to get driver's licenses.

"It's one more punishment for being here that is totally unnecessary and very punitive," Linkhart said. "I think it could lead to a lot of profiling and discrimination, and people will be stopped for looking like an immigrant."

I want the illegal aliens intimidated. Intimidate them all the way back to their home countries and on their home countries' dime.

All of the above. They don’t drive in Mexico. They don’t own cars. Not the places I’ve been and the rural southern areas even more so. It’s like putting 12 year olds behind a wheel and saying ‘have at it!’

Yes, but these "12 year-olds" like to get drunk before they drive, compounding the problem.

People who street race ought to lose their car on the first offense too. Even if it's Daddy's or Uncle's. Better yet, force them to stand by and watch as it goes through the recycling grinder.

Uhh..last time I checked all unlicensed drivers had their cars impounded. Hence the requirement at licensing to have insurance and a rampant business in same day insurance in poor communities that has existed forever. Even among English speakers.

That said, too bad for them the freeloaders.

Surprised they didn’t say it was targeted against blacks too.

And aren’t they kind of promoting a certain negative stereotype? I thought profiling was a non-no?
