Stephen King: If You Can’t Read ‘Then You’ve Got, the Army, Iraq’
NewsBusters ^ | May 5, 2008 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 05/05/2008 6:27:34 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Remember shortly before Election Day 2006 when Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) suggested that if you don't get a good education, "you get stuck in Iraq" (video available here)?

Well, last month, famed horror author Stephen King was speaking in front of a group of high school students at the Library of Congress, and he virtually made the exact same statement.

For those that can bear it, what follows is another in a long line of liberal media members bashing the military (embedded right, h/t Terry Ann):

I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got, the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's, it's not as bright. So, that's my little commercial for that.

Nice sentiment when the nation is at war, Stephen.

Well, yes, King is liberal. That’s old news. I still like his writing and will continue purchasing his books.

I suspect Mr. King knows nothing about the military beyond what he reads in The Nation.

From King's website.

That a right-wing-blog would impugn my patriotism because I said children should learn to read, and could get better jobs by doing so, is beneath contempt. Noel Sheppard says, “Nice sentiment when the nation is at war, Stephen.” I guess he feels ignorance and illiteracy are OK when the country needs cannon-fodder. I guess he also feels that the war in Iraq has nationwide approval. Well, it doesn’t have mine. It is a waste of national resources. . . and that includes the youth and blood of the 4,000 American troops who have lost their lives there and for the tens of thousands who have been wounded. I live in a national guard town, and I support our troops, but I don’t support either the war or educational policies that limit the options of young men and women to any one career—military or otherwise. If you agree, find Sheppard on the internet, and send him an email:

To Mr King (and Kerry)....I read just fine thank you.I read so well that I’ve read a number of passages from the “holy” koran (in English,of course). You two might try doing the same. You might find it an eyeopening experience.

"That a right-wing-blog would impugn my patriotism because I said children should learn to read, and could get better jobs by doing so..."

Except that's not what you said Steve-o

You can try and twist and spin your words anyway you want Mr. King but what you in effect said was that if you are illiterate you can join the U.S. Armed forces, a completely unsupportable contention BTW, thereby conveying the message that the courageous young men and women in our military are only there because they are to stupid to get a "real" job.

Yet another Liberal Elitist with "delusions of relevance".

I have never read one of his books but they have been the basis for some really bad movies.

I question King’s patriotism - in fact, I’d have to say I see NO evidence for his self proclaimed patriotism at all. Like most lefties, they’re always huffing and puffing when challenged about their obvious lack of national pride and support for traditional ideals. Somehow, socialist agendas just don’t seem to be good material for old-fashioned flag waving. Wanting good things for kids has nothing to do with national pride and simply desiring to foist utopian idiocy on a nation at war is no kind of patriotism unless you actually favor the enemies of your nation and owe your civic allegiance to killers and psychopaths.

If there’s going to be another muzzie attack on US soil, here’s hoping it’s epicenter is King’s oh-so-patriotic homestead.

Stephen King forgets who died so he can continue to write his horror fests and make millions of dollars doing it. It wasn't some punk Yale grad making 6 figures a year.

You're right, it was some air force academy grad whose education was state-of-the-art and world-class.

King, we know what you said. Contrary to what you think about military families, we are well educated and can read just fine. You did not say anything that could be construed as "supporting the troops," it was insulting and factually wrong.

Stephen King is a good reason to refuse to learn to read.

Stevie “novel a day” King is a fiction writer. Make-believe is his expertise. Why should anybody be shocked he is a Democrat.

Hey stevie-boy, quit writing for money. You capitalist pig!
