Saddam Hussein confided to his diary that he was afraid of his American captors - because he thought he might catch HIV from them.
The Iraqi tyrant, who was hanged in 2006, kept a diary following his capture by US troops three years earlier.
In extracts published by the London-based Arab daily Al Hayat, he reveals that he feared catching a sexually transmitted disease from his guards.
Saddam said he was concerned to find out that US military guards were using his laundry line to dry their own clothes.
He wrote to them to ask them to stop but some apparently ignored the request.
The former dictator apparently wrote in his diary: "I explained to them that they are young and they could have young people's diseases.
"My main concern was to not catch a venereal disease, an HIV disease, in this place."
The US military has confirmed that pages of Saddam's writings have been released.
Spokesman Major Matthew Morgan declined to describe the writings as a "diary", saying thousands of pages were produced by Saddam.
Saddam was captured by US forces in December 2003, the same year that a US-led invasion toppled his regime.
He was tried and convicted for crimes against humanity by an Iraqi tribunal and then executed in December 2006.

I see this as proof that the middle easterners really do think westerners are trash. All this time we are seeing him as an evil mastermind, he is looking at us as filthy animals. They really mean it when they call us dogs. God help us if they ever get the upper hand.

We should have sent him a couple of those notorious 300 lb. “Bubba” cellmates to give him HIV/AIDS and then he could have really enjoyed his last months on earth......
