McCain will seek judges like Roberts, Alito
1 hour, 26 minutes ago
WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Tuesday he would appoint judges in the mold of conservatives John Roberts, Samuel Alito and former Chief Justice William Rehnquist if he were elected in November.
In an excerpt from a speech McCain was to give in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, the Arizona senator said he would "look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law, and a proven commitment to judicial restraint."
"I will look for people in the cast of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and my friend the late William Rehnquist -- jurists of the highest caliber who know their own minds, and know the law, and know the difference," McCain said.
Roberts, the current chief justice, and Alito were both named to the U.S. Supreme Court by Republican President George W. Bush. Legal experts say they have helped move it to the right. The court has the final word on questions of U.S. law and its rulings affect the rights of all Americans.
The court has been closely divided between liberal and conservative factions on such contentious issues as abortion, the death penalty and church-state separation. Republicans and Democrats have battled frequently over judicial nominations, which must be voted on by the U.S. Senate.
McCain angered some conservatives in 2005 when he joined with a group of Democratic and Republicans senators on a compromise that averted a threat by leaders in the then-Republican-led Senate to prevent Democrats from blocking consideration of Bush's conservative judicial nominees.
In his speech on Tuesday, McCain criticized his Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for voting against the nominations of Roberts and Alito.
Referring to Obama, McCain said, "Apparently, nobody quite fits the bill (for the court) except for an elite group of activist judges, lawyers, and law professors who think they know wisdom when they see it -- and they see it only in each other.

B.S.
at this point I wouldn’t trust McLame if he said the sky was blue and the sun comes up in the east.
Amnesty p.o.s.
Any other laws you don’t particularly support there John?
Oh yeah that little Keating 5 deal YOU WERE involved in.
Oh yeah and then you supported trashing the constitution by suppressing free speech during election time.
And as a conservative you supported so many liberal votes in the senate I can’t believe you are the nominee.
I don’t think Obamma Lamma Ding Dong is telling us much of his plans if elected nor do I think Mrs. Bill Clinton is telling us of her socialism intent.
But you McLame are just a deceitful.SO how’s thet little amnesty plan going for ya there pal?

And that is the heart of the matter. Anyone who believes McCain would appoint strict constructionist judges who would overturn Campaign Finance Reform, his most passionate project and signature issue over the past several years, is criminally naive.
We’ll be lucky to get a Souter out of McCain. More likely, he’ll nominate one of his good buddies on the left. Bill Clinton, perhaps.

At least he seemingly admits Thomas and Scalia are too conservative for him.

That is the biggest problem McCain has.
He already is back to pushing for 'comprehensive immigration' (aka, amnesty, even though he said he never used the word, but audio and video tapes have proved that to be a lie).
He voted to confirm Ginsberg.
He supported the Miers nomination.
To repeat your statement: at this point I wouldnt trust McLame

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (CNN) John McCain the presidential candidate suddenly sounded like the John McCain of 2005 on Monday, touting two pet issues that have generated considerable heartache among grassroots conservatives: the Gang of 14 compromise and comprehensive immigration reform. McCain brought up the Gang of 14 saga unprompted at a town hall here, in advance of a major speech on judicial appointments he is set to deliver tomorrow in Winston-Salem.
I know what bipartisanship is, McCain said. I am going to talk tomorrow again about our Gang of 14: seven Republicans, seven Democrats that got together rather than blow up the Senate, and we confirmed so many federal judges.
<snip>
The Arizona senator also seemed to move past his usual secure the borders first mantra in favor of calling for, as he put it, comprehensive immigration reform.
Last summer, McCain and Sen. Edward Kennedy led the charge on an immigration reform package that aroused the ire of conservatives and ultimately threatened to undermine McCains then-frontrunning presidential bid. (McCain also supported immigration reform bills in 2005 and 2006.)
Unless we enact comprehensive immigration reform I dont think you can take it piecemeal, he explained Monday, answering a question about providing visas for skilled workers.
Same old same old.
McCain apologists certainly have their work cut out for them. Let the spin begin.

If McLame goes to the LaRaza rally and espouses amnesty then I’ll write in Ronald Reagan.
I will never vote for Obamma Lamma Ding Dong, nor the Clinton criminal organization but I also will not support anybody who pushes amnesty.

McCain courts Hispanic voters
|

CNN ^ | May 05, 2008 | CNN Sen. John McCain said Monday the tenor of the immigration debate has hurt the way Hispanic voters view the Republican Party. "I believe the majority of Hispanics share our view that the border must be secured, and the border must be secured first," McCain said in Phoenix, Arizona. "But they also want us to have an attitude which I think most Americans do, that these are God's children and they must be taken care of." The senator from Arizona used Cinco de Mayo as a launching pad for a new Spanish-language Web site on Monday, and he emphasized his stance... |

The GOP powers-that-be have to know this is THE issue with social conservatives. If they want socons to support McCain, they have to convince them that McCain will nominate Scalia-like judges.
Unfortunately for them, McCrazy is simply not up to the task. His heart isn’t in it, and no one believes him anyway.
That being said, it will be interesting to see the spin machine going full tilt today.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Tuesday he would appoint judges in the mold of conservatives John Roberts, Samuel Alito and former Chief Justice William Rehnquist if he were elected in November. And yet:
1. He told a group of supporters that he would NOT appoint judges like Alito because "that guy wears his conservatism on his sleeve."
2. He knows that judges in the Rehnquist-Roberts-Alito mold would be more likely to overturn his signature achievement, McCain-Feingold, given the chance.
3. He loves to accomodate Democrats and he knows that the dimmycras will NEVER allow judges like that to get coonfirmed; and
4. He was the leader of the so-called "Gang of Fourteen" which deraield the prospect of forcing through cofirmation of several of President Bush's nominations -- especially the ones most in the mold of the judges he now says he likes.
Let's be honest: we've gotten these promises from every Republican Presiential nominee, then we've gotten justices like Earl Warren, William Brennan, Harry Blackmun, John Paul Stevens, David Souter, and others.
McCain also says he'll secure the borders, but at the same time he says he'd sign a bill ike the amnesty bil that bore his name.
Juan Mcain simply isn't telling you the truth. There is no "straight talk" there -- he talks out of both sides of his mouth, like any other politician infected with a bad case of Potomac fever.
