Pelosi backs 2nd stimulus, says Bush "in denial" Tue May 6, 2008 12:30pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday called for a second economic stimulus package, and said President George W. Bush is "in denial" about the country's economy.

"It's clear there is a need for a second stimulus," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters at a news conference.

"The president has for a long time been in denial on the state of the economy," she said.

Tax rebate checks are in the mail to millions of Americans under a $152 billion economic stimulus package passed by Congress earlier this year and signed into law by Bush.

The president, backed by fellow Republicans in Congress, has indicated he wants to wait and see how the first stimulus package works before looking at another one.

So Nancy, tell me how a stimulus rebate is not a gimmick but a tax holiday for gasoline is?

I also was “rewarded” by the RATS for succeeding. People who didn’t pay any taxes are getting rebates. I paid plenty of taxes and didn’t get squat!

Hey Nancy, make the tax cuts permanent, eliminate the capital gains tax and drop the death tax ... then step back as the economy kick starts itself.

Me too. The so-called "economic stimulus package" is like trying to make a pool deeper by taking water out of the deep end and pouring it into the shallow end.

The the standard MO of the American political left. The politics of redistribution is always appealing to those who think they will benefit, and the way the demagogue words their message is always the same, “we'll only tax the richest 1% or those making $250,000 a year or more.”

It's ALWAYS the same crap may the name be Pelosi, Hillary, Carter.......... Robin Hood politics with a socialist agenda. And when it fails, blame it on the vast right wing conspiracy.

Shame on you. Go forth and pay more.

Of course, that's what they seem to be saying to us.

If returning some of the tax payers' money is a stimulus, then what will be the nation's largest tax increase when the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010, Nancy? You can use your thesaurus to look up an antonym for stimulus.

Funny! I just shelled out $6,000 to the feds for last year and $5500 for my 1st quarter. That doesn’t include state taxes and the only reason my taxes weren’t higher was because I have to pay $24,000 for a SEP fund. So now I GET A CHECK FOR $1200!? YAHOOOOOOO!!~sarc...Think I’ll save it for my next quarterly taxes due June 16th. YIPEEEEEEEE!!! ~sarc

Take your pick. Either give away more ‘Free Money’ to an Oil Sheikdom or give it to the Chinese in return for shoddy, dangerous products.

While we're at it, let's take on even more Debt (Or even worse, defer needed infrastructure maintenance) to give the average motorist less than $.30/day relief from their gas bill by removing the Fed Gas Tax for a few months.

I realize it is silly season of elections but these proposals are IMO going to make the problem much, much worse. It is this same lack of discipline that has led to our current situation in the first place and now these morons propose more of the same!

Where is the leadership? Oh, wait . . . never mind.

Another rebate scenario????????

Geesh!!

I think they should cut Congress’ salary, let them live on what many of us live on, eliminate the frequent flyer trips, limo rides, etc. and yes, let them do their own grocery shopping and pump their own gas as well.

Alexis de Tocqueville: “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury.”

We have reached that day. The only thing left to debate is how long until we reach the end.

then can send me all the money they want to....with a kid finishing up in college, with my huge property tax bill paid, and my income taxes sent in, ANY tax relief would be helpful....but lets be honest and give it to the people that actually pay taxes this time....they are doing me no favors but raising taxes and fees in one area only to “give” me back a little bit here and there...

Another economic stimulus idea: Start drilling in the Gulf, off the coast of CA, ANWAR. Start building refineries, nuclear power plants and mining the coal in Utah.

There are others articles in the media that Pelosi is linking a second stimulus to ratification of the Columbia FTA.

Let me suggest the the second stimulus will be infrastructure spending. The Senate bill on creating the National Infrastructure Bank was introduced last year and Pelosi has recently had that legislation introduced into the House. Obama and Clinton have both endorsed the NIB.

In denial about what? An economy that is still growing? Unemployment lower than at any time during the debacle known as the Clinton administration? Nancy is the one who is in denial here.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.”
