Switzerland Wants to Protect the Rights of Plants
FOXNews ^ | Monday, May 05, 2008 | Brit Hume

Plants' Rights It isn't just the rights of animals that some are promoting. The Weekly Standard reports an ethics panel in Switzerland is expressing concern that the arbitrary killing of plants is morally wrong. The Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology says that humans cannot claim "absolute ownership" over plants; that "individual plants have an inherent worth," and that man may not use them as he pleases.

More of the excerpt -

It cites a hypothetical example of a farmer "decapitating" wildflowers as expressing a moral stance toward the organism and possibly doing something bad to the flowers themselves. One critic of the report says the concept of plant dignity provides what he called "another tool of opponents to argue against any form of plant biotechnology." - end of excerpt.

The dignity of plants? - No this is not satire!!! You can't make this stuff up!

This is the natural progression of groups like PETA, World Wildlife Fund, Earth Liberation Front (ELF), Greenpeace and that crowd.

ok, we’re going off the deep end here. First we have to be concerned about animal rights, and now plant rights?

I’m no longer inclined to walk around grassy areas on concrete paths. From now on I think I’ll take the shortest route. And, if some wildflower is in the way, it’s toast.

The success and consequent wealth of western civilisation leads to nonsense such as this.

The West’s success has turned it into an over-ripe piece of fruit, on the verge of spoilage.

They certainly do...

Does that work both ways? If I'm laid up with a back injury and can't get up to take care of my house, will the committee dispatch someone to make sure the plants outside don't take over my yard, wear away my driveway, and start climbing the walls of my house?

My daughter was sighted for picking wildflowers in N.C. and had to appear in court. She didn’t realize there were protected plants!

As a degreed Horticulturist and gardener, I can assure you that the weeds and grass in my lawn (what little grass is left) are all treated with equal respect. All are mowed equally, but irregularly. I won’t say the same for some of the stuff trying to take over the shrubs and flower beds...

This is what we get for allowing proponents to separate rights from responsibilities. When people, animals and plants are accorded rights by the community but not expected to live up to their responsibilities to the same community, then we get this kind of nonsense.

I’m no longer inclined to walk around grassy areas on concrete paths.

I've felt the same way ever since I saw "Life After People" on the History Channel a few weeks ago. It's a documentary on how long it would take the earth to eradicate the effects of human existence if we were suddenly to disappear. It was supposed to be a paean to the healing of the earth once free of nasty old humankind, but to me at least it had a distinctly different effect.

The program projected the decay and eventual disappearance of roads, buildings, and other manmade structures over the course of time, and what became abundantly clear is that plants, insects, and animals are just as determined to take over the planet as humans could ever be. They may operate by instinct rather than thought, but they're therefore completely untroubled by any concern for any other species. The program taught me that if I don't keep a constant, watchful eye on my property, the plants, followed by the insects, followed by the animals, will promptly begin to take over and destroy everything I own.

The program is a great, though unwitting, advocate for human dominance of the planet.
