Definitely prayers! Japan is terribly vulnerable to quakes because of its huge population centers.

not a big deal then.....6.7 isn’t that bad in that part of the world. Here it would be, but not there.

Bump and prayers for our friends there.

Yep! The Ring of Fire! The Pacific rim. Volcano in Chili awaking after a thousand years, earthquakes swarms in the western states of the USA. Hawaiian volcano erupting in an unprecedented way.
Looks like AlGore needs to have another sacrificial concert to Gaia!

Quite a bit of activity in the immediate area over the last two weeks, shown as yellow rings underneath the red rings marking today's events. An even bigger 6.5 in the Aleutians last Friday.
To: rwfromkansas
It was originally tagged as a 7.1
The red square on the USGS map covered almost all of Japan. I was pretty scared...
Looks like they are calling it a 6.8 now. Maybe the mods can update the title.

Chile's Chaiten Volcano One Of Scores Of Active Volcanoes In Region
--
A cloud of smoke produced by intensified eruption of the Chaiten
volcano is seen Tuesday May 6, 2008 in southern Chile.
The eruption spewed incandescent material and blated ash
some 20 miles (30 kilometers) into the Andean sky, forcing authorites
to a complete evacuation of the area incluiding the nearby town of Chaiten.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080507/ts_nm/japan_quake_dc;_ylt=AsYC_T_HZaiDuyJlJD0i7d.aK8MA
TOKYO (Reuters) - A earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 jolted eastern Japan early on Thursday, and was felt over a wide area, including in Tokyo, Japan’s meteorological agency said.
The quake, at 1:45 a.m. (12:45 p.m. EDT, Wednesday), was centered in the Pacific Ocean east of Tokyo.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage after the quake, which measured 5 on the Japanese scale of 7 in some parts northeast of Tokyo, NHK said.
No tsunami damage was expected from the quake but there may be slight sea level changes, the agency said on its website.

Have you heard whether nuke plants have had to shut down? Oil was up over $1 on news of earthquake, likely in anticipation of nuke shutdowns and required use of fuel oil for power generation.
To: AmericanInTokyo
Indeed it was!
But the funny part is how quickly you can go back to sleep when they finish.
About halfway through this one I started if this was the BIG ONE and if I needed to get up and start preparing to evacuate... then it settled down again and less than a minute later...
zzzzzzzzzz........
