A great thread on the controversy visited by the lefties on Governor Sarah Palin and family! Thread by goldstategop with thanks to TheSarce for the ping. I excerpted just a slice from the middle of it.

...................................

1) Trig Palin’s Down’s Syndrome is a challenge to their ideas about what represents worthwhile life. The fact that this Down’s baby was carried to term and not aborted is statement that his life has the same value as all life. This is an idea with which the left vehemently disagrees. Here is the Washington Post’s Ruth Marcus discussing her own opinion of Down’s babies in an online chat earlier this week:

I had my children at ages 37 and 39, old enough that the risk of Down syndrome was elevated, as it was for Palin, and my doctor recommended amniocentesis. Had the results indicated any abnormality, I have little doubt that I would have made a different decision than did Palin.

As such, the left sees Baby Trig as a provocation. Note today the commentators complaining that Trig has become a “prop” for Palin’s candidacy simply because the family took turns holding the four-month-old in public last night. (Perhaps these observers simply have no understanding of how infants are handled and cared for.) Instead of being viewed as just another baby, Trig is seen by the left as a little Terri Schiavo—an assertion of the value of all life and an affront to their belief that there are differences in what constitutes meaningful life....

Dorothy Livadas

Why we must be vigilant and must persevere...

What could be safer in these days after the Terri episode shook us all to the quick? Just get a living will and all will be safe. Well this is unfolding right now! Not only that, it is a group that calls itself "Catholic" doing the devil's deed. Thanks, Leslie.

It is like Nancy Legosi calling herself "Catholic".

...........................................

On Friday afternoon, Strong Memorial Hospital removed Dorothy Livadas' life support not only without the consent of Dorothy's duly appointed health care agent but also over the agent's vociferous objections. The agent, Dorothy's daughter Ianthe, had been replaced with Catholic Family Center. As the new substitute decision maker, CFC authorized the removal of life support.

Yesterday, on a plane from Albuquerque, I read a long post (14 single-spaced pages) that Ianthe had placed in the comments field of this blog. I agree that there is a significant likelihood that the living will did not reflect Dorothy's wishes. There is a significant probability that many living wills fails to reflect the wishes of their makers. But they are presumed to constitute "clear and convincing evidence." Ianthe's evidence about the rushed making of the living will was just not sufficient to overcome the presumption.

Like Schiavo, the case did not address end-of-life decision making principles. It was just a dispute about the condition of the patient and the evidence of the patient's wishes. On the other hand, it does indicate a clear trend of courts replacing surrogates who act contrary to either the wishes or best interests of the patient.

Haleigh Poutre update...

Once again, "The Republican" comes through with the latest regarding Haleigh. The story is lengthy and complete, hence the excerpting.

.................................

SPRINGFIELD - Haleigh Poutre, the little girl whose case sparked an overhaul of the state's system of oversight in incidents of child abuse and neglect, will not be required to testify at the upcoming trial of the man accused of abusing her three years ago.

Superior Court Judge Judd J. Carhart ruled this week that the now 14-year-old Haleigh, still undergoing treatment for a severe brain injury, will neither be ordered to testify at the trial of her stepfather Jason A. Strickland nor at a pre-trial competency hearing. The judge ruled in favor of two lawyers appointed to safeguard the girl's interests and the state Department of Children and Families who argued that forcing Poutre to testify would harm her.

~Snip~

He wrote that a psychological examination of Haleigh was performed in March and April by a doctor at Franciscan Children's Hospital in Boston where she is now being treated.

"Based on the results of the evaluation, it has been recommended that Haleigh not be subjected to additional interviews, including testimony before the court," Franco wrote. Citing a number of examples of case law, Franco said it is apparent that testimony by Haleigh would be detrimental to her psychological well-being.

"Haleigh is a 14-year-old child who is psychologically younger than her years," Franco wrote.................

They kept their promise...

Especially in light of my first post this morning, the L.A. Times just has to bring up the subject of Terri afresh. Some criticize us here for constantly keeping the story of Terri on the front burner. But it is the left, the far left, carrying this burden for their actions, constantly reminding us.

Alas, I can only excerpt here when I would love to post the entire article in its pristine evil wrap. It even goes so bold as to post an image of Terri's grave marker with the guilt of Mikey emblazoned on it, his brag of success.

..................................

The very public death of Terri Schiavo began a rush on requests for the paperwork needed to order a good death with dignity. People lit up the phone lines of places like Aging with Dignity, asking for information on living wills.

At about that time, a team of researchers from UC San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Medical Center were interviewing 117 people about their end-of-life wishes and their feelings about advance directives, the legal documents which spell out people's desires. Turns out, they weren't so interested in the laws and specifics of advance directives, but they were eager to talk about Terri Schiavo....

...........................

STATEN ISLAND, Ny., Sept. 5 /Christian Newswire/ -- Kevin Burke, co-founder of the post-abortion healing ministry Rachel's Vineyard, said today that anger directed at Sarah Palin and her family may stem from the repressed grief and pain of those who have had or been involved in an abortion.

"When someone publicly opposes abortion, this rejection can strike at a deeply repressed wound in the woman who has had an abortion or the man who has encouraged a woman to abort," said Mr. Burke. "We at Rachel's Vineyard know from our work with thousands of women and men that profound feelings of guilt and shame accompany abortion. The words or even just the presence of someone who believes abortion to be wrong can cause that repressed guilt and shame to erupt in anger."....

Taken when Terri was in rehab and the rehab place even had a Terri Schiavo Day (Metroplex) Bradenton, FL. Terri was doing so well that Michael Schiavo CUT OFF all rehabilitation and met up with the death lawyers who took her rehab monies for themselves.

Barry Obama’s eyes remind me of the eyes of Terri’s haters outside of hostage woodside. They didn’t look possessed but their eyes were windows to their souls and did creep me out. They seemed to revel in Terri’s suffering particularly at night when the cameras were off. Mikey supporters acted as if they were at Carnivale in Brazil instead of at a place of torture.

What REALLY annoys me is the term "end of life decisions". Many people whose lives are on the line are not anywhere near the end of their lives. Dubbing these end of life decisions imo means that experts for life like Wesley Smith, Phd and Jill Stanek, RN, should address how using that phrase is simply more propaganda through words, just words.

Terri was not terminal and it only became the end of life for her when they killed her.

The topic of Governor Sarah Palin is intrinsic to our efforts on Terri Dailies. Of all in high places, Gov. Palin has shown early on to be the one antidote to the death march against the innocents like Terri. No accident that we identified her and saw her as an answer before she was known nationally, and we amongst many others prayed for her role to come to bear on our concerns. It came true beyond any expectations and I am overjoyed. It could be that her very presence in this new role will have a positive effect on the fate of Lauren Richardson.

Thread by wagglebee illustrates her virtues which play on Terri's Legacy.

......................................

Sen. John McCain electrified the Republican base and millions of people of every political persuasion last Friday when he selected Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Why?

First, because she is a reform-minded, no-nonsense, pro-life, pistol-packing hockey mom with five children. And her pro-life convictions have been illustrated vividly by her decision to carry to term and keep her fifth child, a son with Down syndrome. It is one thing to espouse a pro-life position. It is quite another to live your values and affirm life in this way.

Now, it has been revealed that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant. I have been inundated by reporters and pundits from the media’s chattering classes wanting to know if this revelation will cause traditional family values voters to withdraw their support. It has been clear they expect my answer to be “yes” because they are surprised and astonished when I tell them that this will make traditional values, pro-life voters more likely to support her.

The fact that the secular media are so astonished by my answer shows the extent to which they just “don’t get it” when it comes to pro-life Protestants and Catholics. Why would the Palin family’s decision to support their daughter in having this baby and marrying this baby’s father resonate so positively with pro-life voters? Because the Palin family made the “pro-life” decision in deciding to welcome the baby their daughter and their future son-in-law conceived. The Palin family’s statement says it all:

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support..............

More about Gov. Palin in this thread by wagglebee...

..........................................

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today, in response GOP Presidential nominee John McCain's Convention Address, the President of the Susan B. Anthony List offered the following statement:

"John McCain has cemented his role as the one true, authentically pro-life choice for President," said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. "Last night John McCain reiterated his commitment to building a culture of life. His words, on the heels of his choice of pro-life heroine Sarah Palin for VP, are exactly what pro-life voters needed to hear. The enthusiasm of values voters shown this week for the McCain-Palin ticket drives home the saliency of the abortion issue in this election.".........................

No compromise with the dark side, a point made clear in this thread by wagglebee.

..........................

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).

In response to those who say this teaching has changed or is of recent origin, here are the facts:.............

Eluana Englaro update...

They haven't gotten her yet.

.....................................

Despite a court order, Italian health officials are refusing to pull the plug on a woman who has been in an irreversible coma for 16 years, the Daily Mail reports.

Beppe Englaro, the father of Eluana Englaro, 35, has campaigned for nine years to have the machine keeping his daughter alive turned off, according to the report.

Eluana Englaro has been in a coma since a 1992 car accident. In July, a court in Milan sided with Beppe Englaro, who claims his daughter never wanted to be on life support.

Despite the ruling, Eluana Englaro, who is in a Lecco, Italy clinic, remains hooked to a life support system with health officials claiming it would go against their "professional duties and obligations" to let the woman die.

Eluana Englaro update...

We see an amplification of this profound news. Wouldn't it be great to see such an act of defiance here?

................................

Italian health officials have defied a court order by refusing to take a comatose patient off of life support.

For nine years, Eluana Englaro's father has tried to end her life. Two months ago, a court took his side. But health officials say it would go against their "professional duties and obligations" to let the 35-year-old woman die.

"It's encouraging — and refreshing — to see physicians take their oath to protect life so seriously that they are willing to go against a court order," said Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "Hopefully, doctors in other countries will be emboldened by this move and take similar steps."
