Obama and the Jews: is 61% enough?
Haaretz ^ | 5/8/08 | Rosner

Posted on 05/08/2008 4:10:47 PM PDT by Dawnsblood

Barak Obama and his people should be happy about the headline attached to the new Gallup analysis: Obama Beats McCain Among Jewish Voters. But truly, that is a misleading headline. Even in his wildest dreams no McCain activist was hoping that his candidate will beat Obama fair and square among Jewish voters. American Jews are liberal Democrats. A Democratic nominee cannot conceivably lose most of the Jewish votes. In their dreams, the McCain people hope that their candidate will be able to pull out the almost 40% Ronald Reagan got from Jews back in 1980.

"Barack Obama is faring better than might be expected among Jewish voters" the poll says.

"Expected" by whom?

According to the new Gallup data he will only get 61% of the vote, and McCain will get 32%. That is 13% less for Obama than the percentage of Jewish Americans voting for John Kerry back it 2004, and 7% more for McCain than the number of Jewish Americans voting for Bush back in 2004. That can be, well, the difference between winning and losing Florida.

What a stupid question.

Is 39% enough for Obama’s opponents?

Whatever 61% makes Obama, it must make his opponents twice as bad then?

I have always been SO baffled by this.

I asked an Observant Jewish friend..."WHY do you do this??"

He shrugged, and said, "We're contrary-That's just what we do!".

Correction: Most American Jews are liberals first and Jews second. That's why they can vote for Obama, who doesn't have particular warmth for Israel and whose key advisers are hostile towards Israel and the Jews.

That margin could grow IMO, Obamao is a man of the Intl Left, their current cause de jour is the Palestinians, McCain has supported Israel far beyond the usual “Move the US Embassy to Jerusalem” pablum of Hilde, Obama won’t even go that far.

NJ could be mixed into this as well.

Yet another demographic (since CNN, MSNBC, etc. are obsessed with deomographics) where McCain will outperform for a Republican against Obama. Also on this list are rednecks and Hispanics.

If these trends hold up, there is a good chance that McCain would win Florida quite handily over Obama (Palm Beach County having the highest percentage of Jews on a per capita basis in the United States).

Judaism teaches that one should act not for oneself but for the infant, the orphan, the stranger. That is why Jews are liberals. Jews are in favor of gun control, immigration and secularism.

Huh?

I think the point is that Democrats usually get a majority of the Jewish vote. 61%, if it plays out that way, would be low by historical standards. It could still be enough to win — or not.

I DON’T believe that Obama will even get that much of the Jewish vote. This is a solid case of the NH effect or whatever you want to call it. When it’s time to fill out that ballot, the inka dot will NOT be filled for Obama. Sorry. Outside of the marginally Jewish Trotskyists who are busy campaigning for Obama in their Che t-shirts right now, even the average liberal Jew will vote for McCain if Hillary has to bail.

The new generation of American Jews does not have the same commitment to Israel as its parents did. American Muslims, on the other hand,, are almost unanimously anti-Israel. Obama has the support of virtually ALL American Muslims as well as that of Jews who are indifferent or hostile to toward Israel. Today, Obama backer Carter is attacking Israel in a foreign Left wing newspaper. If the democrats of Obama, Ellison and Carter wins this election, Israel loses its one international ally.

I predict that the Jews will generally accept Obama. He will turn them around once Hillary is out. He is starting with about 60% and can get at least ten points more.

Judaism teaches:

If I am only for myself, what am I?

You are not Jewish, you have no clue of what Judaism teaches, you are a troll.

If evangelicals rally around the GOP, Jews will be reminded that they are Democrats.

Jews want Democrat-appointed Supreme Court justices.

Jews are strongly against the Iraq war and always have been. McCain cannot get around that.

I don’t disagree with your points about Jewish liberal perspective. However, Orthodox Jews are increasingly conservative and young self-identified Jews vote conservative at a higher percentage than the older generations. So that leaves baby boomers and elderly. Baby boomer women are in love with Hillary and could more easily vote for McCain as an alternative than Obama, who they resent. The elderly are likely to be suspicious of Obama that he is muslim and mysteriously affiliated. I can see a lot of seniors in FL and CA conveniently forgetting where their polling station is or voting for McCain because he seems responsible.

Most American Jews are liberal Democrats because they have abandoned Judaism and embraced the DNC as an object of worship. This elderly population of Jewish liberals is assimilating, intermarrying, contracepting, aborting, and gaying themselves into extinction.

Fine. What if some Democrat were drawing 61% of blacks? That would make the opponent only half as strong among blacks as the Democrat. It would also predict, other things being equal, that that particular Democrat didn't have a prayer of winning the general election. Since Democrats normally count on getting 90% of the black vote, and even then the Republican may run close by winning - albeit by a smaller percentage - among white voters, who are more numerous.
