Fort Benning, GA Here at the U.S. Armys biggest base on the east coast, soldiers and their dependents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their "economic stimulus payments." Its a good thing because, like most of us, these American heroes are going to need the extra money just to purchase their next tank of gas.
This week, the IRS begins mailing rebate checks to budget crunching taxpayers. Bush Administration officials hope the checks will be used for a citizen shopping spree to resuscitate the U.S. economy. But instead of getting that new patio grill, consumers are more likely to apply Uncle Sams payments to their next purchase of petrol.
When the price of oil hit $100 per barrel in January, I wrote in this column that, "those who wish to lead this nation in the future need to put more than hot air into solutions such as clean, safe nuclear energy for electricity and hydrogen fuel cell technology for propelling people and products around the planet.'
Unfortunately, few politicians seem to have given a second thought to the fact that this country hasnt had an energy plan for the last thirty years, and it doesnt look like we will have one anytime soon.
While Washingtons political elites in both parties have debated and dithered, the price of crude oil has risen to $123 per barrel nearly double what it was at this time last year. The cost of a gallon of gas at the pump is approaching $4 per gallon. Some analysts are now predicting that the price of a barrel of oil could approach $200 in the next two years and that gasoline could be $6.00 a gallon. An equal amount of diesel may cost truckers as much as $7.50.

Remember the high hopes when GWB first took office that we'd finally start drilling? Than was back in 2001. He even had a Republican Congress to do it. Year one we heard lots of talk about an energy bill and then ... nothing. It faded away like a phart in a gale, just like Social Security reform.
NOW he criticizes??? Granted he had 9/11 to deal with but we sure managed to push through things like McCain's Assault on the First Amendment, Teddy Kennedy's Education bill, a massive new entitlement in the Prescription Drug money pit.
I'm sorry, Mr. President, but you will have to come out with a Reaganesque appeal to the nation if you are going to get past Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid stalling for any one of the three democRATs (environmentally speaking) that will replace you.
I know the Rats were screaming and blocking any and everything related to drilling and I believe the president and all Repubs should have pushed harder on it.
They all should be beating the Rats over the head with it because of the mess we’re in now with the cost of energy.
Non-corn ethanolAlso, there's indication that people might get as much or more bang per buck for their gas dollars with gas / ethanol mixtures.
Gas-competitive gas / ethanol mixtures
Regarding your note, the earlier post had no article link. Everything’s A-OK with this one.
Thanks, AM. I couldn’t figure what was wrong, sorry about that.
wont be any corn ethanol in the midwest if it don’ quit raining. Most successful corn crops need to be in the ground before Memorial Day to reach full potential.
Last year we couldn’t buy a rain. This year we have made up for last years deficit.
I hope it quits raining so the crops can be planted.
In other words, $150 billion in instant foreign aid to enemy states such as Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
Every time I look at that scumbag John Warner, all I can think is what a traitor he was for denying the people of Virginia a great Senator in Oliver North.
I couldn’t agree with you more on Warner, Ollie would have been a great Senator. He cuts through the BS and does what is right.
Sure the Republicans had the barest of majorities, but several of those were worse than useless because they could be counted on to vote regularly with the Democrats. Even when they DID vote with their fellow Republicans, the Republicans in Congress were weenies and let the Democrats invoke cloture on votes to which it should never have applied.
This is a problem created by Congress, and it will have to be solved there.
Well, it will have to come to a head sooner or later. Americans will riot in the streets if they can’t buy gas or if food prices go so high that people aren’t eating. And, you know what? I’ll be joining them if I can’t afford to drive to and from my job.
It would have been better to not do it.
I look to him for leadership. Ronnie wouldn’t have let things fester for 7 years. Where was the veto pen in his first 6 years? Sure, Congress failed him big time but what did he do about it? Put his weight behind Specter and others like him over real conservative candidates? Asking for things is not leadership, it’s management and typical Republican compromise (meaning republicans give a mile, RATs don’t move an inch).
For starters, we need to remove the labyrinth of pandering-to-peasant-superstitions roadblocks to nuclear power development and get rid of subsidies that artificially drive biofuel production to corn instead of waste biomass.
Agreed, the enviro wackos have hamstrung us on nuclear power, that’s got to change.
Reagan never got everything he wanted, either, and the Democrats he dealt with hadn't made up the 'cloture rule' yet, or he wouldn't have ever gotten anything done. President Bush can talk until he's blue in the face, but if Congress doesn't act, there's nothing he can do.
The ANWR legislation did not simpy “fade... away like a phart in a gale” ... The SENATE Demodogs FILIBUSTERED that legislation after it had passed the Republican-controlled House.
ALL the blame here is STRICTLY ON the Demodogs.
You are one of the most sensible posters on FR.
You’re correct, I had forgotten they filibustered it. I was thinking they had blocked it with one of their archaic rules.
No, the Republicans left the field long ago. Waaaah, they filibuster us. Waaaah, we're the minority. Our beloved Reagan knew how to deal with that - and he did. Is there no one left in "power" who knows that?
I agree with you about anything that points out Republican (in general) spinelessness. There are a few who stand out favorably, but not as many as I would like. Nevertheless, the bulk of the MAIN problem here is not with the Republicans, but the Demodogs.
Meanwhile, As I write, the price of OIL is
$125.69 / barrel.
Why, thank you, dear! ;o)
