TIME'S TITANS JAZZ IT UP (low turnout for TIME 100 gig - Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
New York Post ^ | May 8, 2008 | Keith J. Kelley

THE hottest spot in town on the media scene was the Time 100 party last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center to honor the 100 people that the weekly magazine deems to be the world's most influential.

Somewhere between 30 and 40 honorees were expected to be on hand for last night's event, which meant that the majority of those who were named the world's most influential - such as Mayor Bloomberg - didn't attend the black-tie bash.

Time Managing Editor Richard Stengel said that so far the magazine has not ranked the honorees in any particular order.

While some say that's out of fear of offending the honorees, Stengel defended the move.

"How do you compare a movie to a scientific breakthrough?"

The list is broken into five major areas: leaders and revolutionaries; heroes and pioneers; scientists and thinkers; artists and entertainers; and builders and titans.

Stengel said next year he is seriously mulling rankings for each category, even if there is still no single overall list.

So until then, it is the seating chart that shows who is hot and who is not, and Media Ink is once again happy to provide the inside view.

A very public display of how the Drive-By Media’s influence is rapidly waning. Used to, folk would kill to see and bee seen at this gig. Now, who cares?

..."How do you compare a movie to a scientific breakthrough?"...

Simple you a**hole, there is no comparison between the two. No movie of any kind! can ever compete in importance with a 'scientific breakthrough.'

That was an easy one! :)

Ahh, but the criteria was "influence", not "importance".

An Incontinent Truth was certainly influential, despite being hyperbolic twaddle.

I would say any movie that has a great deal of 'influence' should be categorized as an 'important' movie regardless of the results: Good or bad. or not? :)

Can you give me a couple of movies that somehow clarify your point? I am afraid I see things too much in black and white :)

in·flu·ence

–noun 1. the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others: He used family influence to get the contract.

2. the action or process of producing effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of another or others: Her mother's influence made her stay. 3. a person or thing that exerts influence: He is an influence for the good. 4. Astrology. a. the radiation of an ethereal fluid from the stars, regarded as affecting human actions and destinies. b. the exercise of occult power by the stars, or such power as exercised. 5. the exercise of similar power by human beings.

I don't watch many movies. My distinction was that an "important" event will still be regarded as "important" a hundred years on, while an "influential" event may not.

Britney Spears is influential, but, in the grand scheme of things, probably not important.

I hope that An Incontinent Truth is the same.
