Sacramento, CA (AP) -- Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson upset local gay and lesbian leaders after saying he believes marriage is between a man and a woman.

The former NBA star made the statement in response to a question during a candidate debate this week.

Gretchen Bender, vice president of the Sacramento County Board of Education, says Johnson's statement shows that he is not ready to lead the city.

Bender and a half-dozen other gay and lesbian leaders held a news conference to express their concern about the former Phoenix Suns star.

This is remarkable. Imagine stating something that is so obvious and normal, and then get ripped because of said statement.

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.

No, Gretchen, I think this proves that Kevin Johnson IS ready to lead your city.

By the way, Gretchen, your position as vice prez of the local board of indoctrination and as a gay/lesbian rights advocate speaks volumes to me why Californica is the last place I want to be. Unless your citizens elect a few more leaders of substance who have moral standards and no need to pander to the pervert vote.

Oooo, and I just re-read... Sad for Sacramento that they’ve got a woman like that on their board of education. Scary.

So I guess no Catholics, Muslims, Evangelicals or Orthodox Jews are fit for office in Sacramento? Maybe they should change its name.

It will take value-minded black men to lead us back to a moral and ethical America....

I happen to think that many black men have strong character and leadership abilities.......I know I am stereotyping but when its true it has to be said....

Really? He made an honest and HISTORICALLY accurate statement, one that a vast majority of American citizens agree with and that makes him not ready to lead a city?
What I think his statement shows is he is not a victim of the foolish and dangerous political correctness that is doing so much harm to America. But then thats just me........

Sorta sad when they gay community doesn’t get it. He supports civil unions and benefits but because his religion does not support an actual marriage between same sex partners he should be penalized? I guess equality, which would include freedom of religion, doesn’t register to the gays. Well it does, but only in a “gay way”

My brothers gay and lives in the sacramanto valley and he’s voting for this guy. I wonder if that means he’s really not gay. I gotta go check.

Romans 1:25-27 tells us that same-sex sexual relationships are a consequence of idolatry. In other words, such relationships are a consequence of disobeying the 1ST COMMANDMENT, a major aspect of the GREATEST COMMANDMENT, to love the jealous God with all your being.

Homosexuals need to keep in mind, however, that the good news of the gospel is not about how God despises same-sex sexual relationships. In fact, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 indicates that certain members of that church had been slaves to such relationships but had been cleansed in Jesus' name. So these former homosexuals had evidently repented and accepted God's grace to straighten their lives out.

This whole campaign to unseat a militant, leftist, GovernMental EnvironMental woman as Mayor has been a concealed smear campaign by other lesser candidates and orgs, trying to bloody this black man worse than Clarence Thomas by trying to make him look like a jail-bait baby raper!!!

I don't know this Phoenix celebrity basketball star and I generally don't think much of celebrities taking short-cuts into public policy through politics, but the attack on this person has been "over the top" in intensity!!!

Believing that marriage is between a man and woman makes you unqualified to lead? Baffling. Kevin Johnson certainly demonstrated leadership on the basketball court. How that translates to other fields I'm not sure.

You’re preaching to the choir.

Thanks for the feedback. That has crossed my mind.

But not only do some Freepers evidently appreciate being reminded about the referenced passages, even though there are many people in FR who understand the depravity of homosexuality, it is still a mixed crowd.

Trust me, EVERY board of education has a fag on it. But the real problem is that the Fag lobby has conned all the soccer moms, CEOs and all the other people who want to be "fair" into believing its no different than having different preferences in fruit. Bad example, probably.

And yeah, I said fag. Now who is going to make me go to rehab? (you better be packing some heat)

A good point. That’s why I’ve decided that if I have a child, I will home school or send it to a thoroughly researched private school.

Well, hate the sin, love the sinner. I’m praying hard.

Abolutely nothing hateful, bigoted, or homophobic in those comments. Supports civil unions, benefits.

Is there something about being a homosexual that predisposes one against any sort of compromise?

The Cavs traded KJ for Larry Nance. That trade helped both teams. Cav's had Mark Price, a small guard, solidly starting and Kevin was the same type of player. Cav's needed a power forward and Larry was great.

I wish KJ good luck in the tougher league--politics.

What's unsettling is the notion that homo activists (like Fargo, Rudin, etc.) somehow have an inside lane on local politics in general. Their 'troops' and a complicit media are about all they have going for them, yet they win elections when- the vast majority of citizens within their precinct are hetero and actually 'raise' (and create) children.

This is one of among many observations that I file in the "upside-down" folder. You DO NOT want me to open that sucker up.

The 'brotha' running may have some issues with the feds, so what else is new? I doubt there is one uncorrupt person running for mayor of Sacra-fisha-mento. (A KZAP throwback).

It's worse than that, actually. If it were merely a question of preference, one might be able to say that one didn't trust the judgement of a man who preferred cantaloupe to pineapple.

Really, what we see with regard to homosexuality is the cult-of-the-victim. Most normal Americans understand that homosexuals are profoundly alienated from some of the chief joys of human life, and feel that nobody should make things harder for them and indeed nobody should oppose some compensatory special treatments for them, having been carefully manipulated from considering the extent to which homosexuals have alienated themselves from authentic human happiness and the degree to which their suffering is self-generated from their doomed pursuit of fraudulent equalities.

I haven't the stomach for too much KFBK to find out, but I do wonder how they are reporting on Mr. Johnson. Rush is on KSFO and when I listen to C2C it's all over the dial.

I wonder because the talk show host they fired about a year ago said on an out-of-town station (where he was filling in) that one of the reasons he was fired was because he refused to support gay marriage and would not support it on his show.
