"Alert Washingtonians were treated to an odd juxtaposition not long ago. John McCain was booed at the Conservative Political Action Conference, the big annual gathering of the right-wing tribes, while trying to establish that he was a conservative. On the same day, across town at the American Enterprise Instituteanother conservative strongholdNewt Gingrich, the former House speaker, was warmly received when he touted a new book called Real Change. Never one to go underboard, Gingrich called for explosively replac[ing] the failed bureaucracies of the past.
"The irony of the contrast seemed lost on conservatives. No one in the movement doubts Gingrich is a real, no-kidding conservative. Many doubt that McCain is. Some flatly flunk him. Thus spake James Dobson, the head of Focus on the Family and a leader of the Christian right: I am convinced Senator McCain is not a conservative. Hes not one of us, these conservatives have insisted."
"Actually, theyre not one of them. But he is."
"If the booers had paid attention to McCains speech, they might have noticed several mentions of Ronald Reagan. No surprise there. But McCain also went out of his way to invoke another conservative luminary, pointedly quoting him twice. That was Edmund Burke."

You mean that little thing in which he is a proud papa, that direct assult to the 1st amendment? That one?
Hey folks, I guess "invoking" a Conservative is all it takes now a days to be a Conservative! Who knew?
The old double negative ploy.
I watched the CPAC convention...I don’t recall any real prominent “boo-ing”...some, I guess.
I respect Tom Coburn who introduced McCain, and though I won’t work for the Republican nominee like I did the last two election seasons, I will cast a ballot for him.
Gimme a break. We’re supposed to wet ourselves because McCain makes a few references to Reagan? Are we even sure they were positive references or more like Bush 1’s ‘voodoo economics’ kind of reference?
McCain is to Conservative as Drug Dealer is to Pharmacist.
“Gimme a break. Were supposed to wet ourselves because McCain makes a few references to Reagan? “
Apparently...yes. Make sure you bring a change of pants and undies. =)
The kind of moronic, meaningless drivel that would make any left-wing college professor proud.
Sorry, had to fix that.
Right, so that would disqualify McCain because of McCain/Feingold taking away portions of our right to free political speech.
Well said.
How about that tv ad with him and pelosi for global warming? So many of our “fearless leaders” made quite a turn about. Pretty scary when you stop and think about it.
McCain failed to support tax cuts because Bush supported them. his lead in amnesty, his lead in the McCain Feingold fiasco that suppressed our free speech rights and his Keating five deal are just a few of my PROBLEMS I HAVE WITH MCLAME.
"Right, so that would disqualify McCain because of McCain/Feingold taking away portions of our right to free political speech."
Bingo!
So he mentioned two conservatives in his speech and that makes himba conservative.
Makes sense to me, not.
That’s our “new” party for ya.
I read the article. Written by a liberal, it has more smoke and mirrors than Bankok whore house.
Quasi-academic tripe whose only use is in the bathroom.
Reagan signed the CA abortion bill...and spending went out of control under him....and it seems all is forgiven. But we’ll NEVER forgive MCCain...oh no! We’ll seat a communist before we do THAT!
Clever.
Maverick McCain rips GOP By Noelle Straub Friday, April 2, 2004
WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain yesterday unleashed an attack on his own party, saying the GOP is ``astray on key issues and criticizing President Bush [related, bio] on the war in Iraq.
*****``I believe my party has gone astray, McCain said, criticizing GOP stands on environmental and minority issues.
*****``I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy, he said. ``But I also feel the Republican Party can be brought back to the principles I articulated before.
*****The maverick senator made the remarks at a legislative seminar hosted by U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan (D-Lowell) as he again ruled out running on a ticket with Democrat John F. Kerry [related, bio].
*****The Arizona Republican took on President Bush for failing to prepare Americans for a long involvement in Iraq, saying, ``You cant fly in on an aircraft carrier and declare victory and have the deaths continue. You cant do that.
*****McCain said the U.S. should seek more U.N. involvement in Iraq. ``Many people in this room question, legitimately, whether we should have gone in or not, he said, adding that that debate ``will be part of this presidential campaign.

Didn’t he also state hill and fake messiah would make a great President?
Pleeeeze don't make us TRUE conservatives have to defend this man. Be assured that we will get the kind of government that the oligarchs want us to have. If the (R) party were a true conservative party they would have kicked the Olympia Snows & McLame out of their party. Now that they are all inclusive then let it be a moderate party. This man will fit it as the Bushes & people like me will go elsewhere. You don't need us types, correct?
I didn’t know Newt did that to her. But I do know he went to the dark side on global warming and like you I am sick of seeing his face.
AAMOF - if he iscoming radio or TV I turn it off or change channels.

Perhaps you will not be so happy in Arizona after the next President begins to turn the USA into the Massachusetts model so loved by liberals everywhere.
I tend to think the Republican party will get to that deep hole in the basement sooner, rather than later, like sometime in 11/08. I don't expect them to accept delivery of the message that their former voters are sending, the one about a good many of us simply not being interested in the socialist agenda even if they are.
Actually, I have been looking at McCain-Feingold in a new light lately. Now don’t flame away yet.
Seems to me some people’s money DOES need to be kept out of politics. Whose? Foreign interest’s such as Soros’ dirty left-wing dominating cash. Now, did MF do that? Nope. Was that its goal? Partially. Was it an abortion of a law? Yes. But something does need to be done to limit Soros, China, Saudi, etc. money dominating our election process.
/who do you think is funding the Obamanation?
I don't know about any abortion bill he signed, but certainly people can change, and often for the better. Mr. Reagan, God rest his soul, is a great example of that.
Blame Congress for the spending, that's their department.
McCain is a media whore, a supporter of criminal activity, and a constitutional traitor. But if you feel like a "good conservative" pulling his lever just because it has an R on it, enjoy yourself.
Of both likely candidates for the Presidency, only one has authored legislation that is a direct assault upon the Constitution of this land.
And some freepers want to reward him for it with the Presidency.
No, we just realize that the only reason the Obamanation hasn’t gutted the whole thing is that he hasn’t had the chance. It really is a (marginally) lesser of two evils thing. And at this point in history, we can’t have a islamism appeasing BLT radical leftist as pres - we literally might not survive 4 years under him as a nation.
"And some freepers want to reward him for it with the Presidency."
Amen brother.
If you feel comfy pulling that lever for any of the "above evils", you go ahead and do so. Our country was NOT founded on choosing a lesser of evils.....just what was right and just. And if you had to fight for it, so be it. America has lost it's spine. I think this election is a wake up call.
You don’t think McBackstabber will take being elected potus as a reward for spitting in our faces?
Oh yeah, he’ll spit in our faces and betray conservatives left and right. But he won’t betray the nation in favor of Islamism and he will appoint OK Supremes (the importance of which cannot be overstated). We can and will recover from his perfidity. The Obamanation will betray us to the Islamists. It will be much harder if not impossible to recover from that.
(Both will betray us to the illegal immigrabt invasion, but I’d rather have too many illegal Mexicans here causing damage on a personal level than full out appeasement of Islamism.)
You almost never get what you want in politics. It is almost always a choice between evils...
“Oh yeah, hell spit in our faces and betray conservatives left and right. But he wont betray the nation in favor of Islamism”
Just Mexico. Do you want to know who has killed more Americans since 9/11, muslims or Mexicans?
“and he will appoint OK Supremes (the importance of which cannot be overstated).”
No. He won’t. He will appoint those that can be approved by Ted Kennedy and you know it.
That's been Team Juan's 2008 campaign strategy so far, in a nutshell. No reason to believe it's ever going to get any better than that, is there...? ;)
