Across the former green line, the Christian sectors of the capital remained outside the control of Hezbollah, with hundreds of armed youth taking position on the roof tops of tall buildings. Will Nasrallah order an invasion of East Beirut or will he ask his "Christian puppets" to do the job for him? In the Chuf Mountains, south of Beirut, the Druses are besieged: The March 14 Coalition seem to be physically targeted for elimination, unless a third force protects it.
Where is the Lebanese Army? Well, its commander made sure his units would not side with the Lebanese Government in its struggle against Hezbollah. This was called "neutrality." That would be the equivalent of the U.S forces not intervening if a gigantic militia emerged in America and surrounded the White House, the U.S Congress and all federal buildings. Unreal in a democracy, but very real in a country where the influence of Syria and Iran have not been reduced by the mere rise of the Cedars Revolution. And that is precisely what Washington's foreign policy architects haven't been able to comprehend.
Within the Beltway, lots of analyzing on both sides of the Potomac: What can the U.S do to respond to the Syro-Iranian offensive which is obliterating a young democracy so dear to the speech writers of the President and to many congressional leaders from both parties? A crushing defeat to democracy in Lebanon under the eyes of an American public eager to see advances in the War on terror will be devastating. U.S warships are patrolling the international waters along the Lebanese coasts. A ten thousand-strong UNIFIL force is deployed inside southern Lebanon.

“A ten thousand-strong UNIFIL force is deployed inside southern Lebanon.”
Don’t even mention this. They are a worthless joke.
Lebanon is gone. Jordan is next.
Putsch in Lebanon ping.
I think the author summed it up correctly: “Alea jacta est,” the die is cast. This all happened so quickly and with such a strange absence of world media attention that I suspect it’s all over now and essentially Hizbullah has a state. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what today brings. I don’t believe there will be any serious resistance, either by the Lebanese army or by allies, and it looks to me as if one of the few slightly hopeful outposts in the ME has fallen without a struggle, almost as if it had been arranged in advance.
I saw photos in the European press of people in the Muslim neighborhoods happily waving Mookie’s picture as they greeted Hizbullah.
Probably the picture was of the idiot Nasrallah and not Mookie in Lebanon.
So has Carter commented on this...it is a direct outcome of his visit. Democracy destroyed ala Jimmah.
......Probably the picture was of the idiot Nasrallah .....
He is probably on a take our list.
Our key strategic mistake was not building up the military after 911. Instead, paradoxically, we have decreased the size of the military (recent increased in the Army notwithstanding). This has left us with no margin to respond to threats such as this. The truth about the GWOT is that to achieve victory, it needs to be fought everywhere at once, including: Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Gaza, and Pakistan. Until that happens, the enemy will always have a safe haven. Unfortunately, we seem to be in the process of blaming ourselves for 911, defining Jihad down, throwing Israel and Serbia to the wolves, and electing a President (Obama) who will all but formalize our surrender. In short, we are losing the GWOT due to a lack of will. This incident in Lebanon is just the latest sign of that.
The last Lebanese Civil War wasn’t enough?
A coup against the government is not unusual in many parts of the world. This is a tinderbox, however, and the match may be Israel’s reaction if they invade to support the Lebanese government.
By the way, it is clear now why Hezbollah has been building a “Hezbollah Line” of defenses along the Israeli-Lebanon border for the past year after the last Israeli incursion. They aim to be ready for an Israeli reaction.
and the UN went.. hummmmmmmmm...
Let’s pass a resolution..

Not to be pedantic, but isn’t it “alia acta est” (the die was cast) or “alia jacta esto”, (Let the die be cast)?
Looks like things are shaping up for the Israeli military to have to do some major damage down the road.
