WTVG -- Crystal Dixon just received verbal notification from UT that she has been fired for speaking her opinion in a copy of the Toledo Free Press. A high-ranking University of Toledo administrator has been fired for speaking out. UT's associate vice president of human resources was put on paid administrative leave about 2 weeks ago after writing an opinion column in the Toledo Free Press. Crystal Dixon just received verbal notification from the University of Toledo that she has been fired. It's all for speaking her opinion in a copy of the Toledo Free Press. Doug Oliver has been teaching for 23 years. Now, for the first time, he says he's afraid to speak out. "All I know is what Dr. Jacobs wrote, and what he wrote sends a very clear message to me that I better be careful about what I say that doesn't align with political views."
University president Lloyd Jacobs expressed his views in an article in the Toledo Free Press. His column followed one written by the University's associate vice president of human resources, Crystal Dixon. Dixon ignited a debate about whether discrimination against gays is different from other forms of discrimination, including race. In her April 18th column Dixon wrote: "as a black woman... I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual life style are 'civil rights victims'. Here's why i cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a black woman." "I disagree with a number of those view points and I stated at least on the face of it. They aren't consistent with University stated values," says UT president Dr. Lloyd Jacobs. Meanwhile, Dixon is out of a job and some faculty members, like Oliver, say it's just because she voiced her opinion. Late this afternoon 13abc spoke with Crystal Dixon. She says her termination is clearly a violation of her 1st amendment right for free speech, religious discrimination, and race discrimination. Now she is pointing the finger at University leadership. "I am an alumnus. I have worked with a fantastic team. I absolutely love the people I work with and I am disappointed in this and disappointed absolutely. Is this a lack of courageous leadership on the part of the unive
File a lawsuit, dear.
I’ll be cheering you on.
I hope Ms. Dixon has called Pacific Legal or Mark Levin of Landmark Legal...This should be an easy case to win and if she won, would be a “wake-up” to learning institutions that have gone so far p.c., so far left that they don’t allow freedom of expression, even by their own instructors.
I had an opportunity to read both articles; the original, and her response.
I thought both were framed in very respectful terms, both pro and con. This is the kind of dialogue that should be at the heart of intelligent debate.
I have several friends who are gay and am disgusted by "blind" hatred towards them; however, as a Christian, I am concerned for the most important part of them, their immortal soul. A person can care for others but not approve of every aspect of their lives; this is not difficult to understand.
How ridiculous that this woman was fired! I, too, hope that she sues.
What an outrage. She is African American and they are treating her like this?? How scary. Yet the elites say it is Bush taking away our rights. What a load of garbage. This might be the way things look under President Obama when conservatives try to speak out.
Don’t you just love watching liberals play their own race and gender cards against each other?
...pass the popcorn.
If no one’s thought of this term before, try this:
This woman is a victim of HOMOFASCISM.
The left and the homo lobby is the modern day reincarnation of fascism. There is no longer any freedom of speech in the USA. We lost it to the fascists.
I read her letter, and she’s wonderfully articulate. Her mistake in today’s fascist academic climate is not only in opposing the gay agenda, but in proclaiming that she belongs to a group for which academia not only allows, but promotes hatred: Christians.
Life in what is fast becoming the Socialist Republic of America.
Elect Obama or Clinton and speed the process......
Elect Obama or Clinton and speed the process...?
...and McCain’s gonna do what...? Appoint three more Souters to the Court?
Art-history professor Camille Paglia and writer Tammy Bruce are both "as gay as a Disney cow", and they call it the same way you do.
Hunter Madsen, writing as "Erastes Pill", and Marshall Kirk, authors of the essay series "Overhauling Straight America" (which they later rewrote with suitable edition for a general audience as After the Ball), made no bones about borrowing Nazi black-propaganda techniques, privileging their own emotions and specialness above any sort of ideas about rational discourse and fair play. This was, after all, for all the marbles. (Researcher Irving Bieber had described that sort of viciousness, that he encountered during his longitudinal study with gay men in the 50's.)
The American Fascist movement is becoming more and more aggressive and confident.
We are just one president and two or three Supreme Court Justices away from being the kind of country where free speech is banned and dissidents are taken away in the middle of the night. The leftist establishment is Stalinist to the core and is working day and night to impose such a "people's" dictatorship.
It is always an entertaining spectacle when socialist, professional victims turn on each other.
She is correct, sodomy is a choice. If these sodomites want to not be discriminated against, stop shoving it in the rest of our faces. Stop having "Gay Pride Parades" and whatever.
My usual slam at these people is; if you have to have a parade to "celebrate your lifestyle" then who you like to go to bed with, is the least of your problems.
Paractically every homo I know, has some other issue that needs professional treatment, yet they get pissed when I tell them that they should seek treatment of their other issue saying that I don't understand the homosexual lifestyle. I understand it just fine. It is the same idiocy that these yuppie biker types.
It would appear that Ms Dixon is, by definition, the victim of a fascist administration. If the action against her is not “suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship” I don't know what is.
This article is poorly written and confusing. I support Ms. Dixon in her efforts to exercise free speech as a Christian woman. But I do not agree with her own claims to “victim” status due to her race. We cede too much ground in the culture wars when we side with one aggrieved minority as they battle another. Both are wrong. Color blind society, anyone?
Another university practicing skin deep diversity with conformity of thought that goes clean to the bone.
Perhaps this is not too surprising, since Hitler’s original Nazis were also light in the loafers.
The university has not done a good enough job with its “diversity training”......er, thought control.
George Orwell would be very proud.
Actually, she's not an "alumnus;" she's an alumna.
A liberal university - an island of repression amidst a sea of freedom.
What's the alternative? Either 'rat would appoint three more Ruth Bader Ginsbergs.
There’s not enough differenct between Souter and Ginsberg to matter. Check Souter’s voting record.
Yes, how dare they impose idiocy on a protected species over another protected species.
Google “The Pink Swastika”. Now it goes overboard and says every last Nazi including Hitler himself was homosexual, but the part about Ernst Roehm and the S.A is spot on.
Diversity means in everything but thought. Integrity means "everyone agrees with me." Teamwork means "Be a good team player and do exactly as you're told." The most narrow-minded people in the country are the ones who actively promote demographic diversity as a goal.
If anyone wants to email President Jacobs...
I get the free speech and the religious discrimination arguments. However, the racial discrimination claim seems to be force of habit.
,i.Elect Obama or Clinton and speed the process...?
...and McCains gonna do what...? Appoint three more Souters to the Court?</i>
I am more concerned about Hillary’s desire to end a free market economy and to put doctors on salaries, and Obama’s desire to limit how much I earn each year.
McCain has problems as a candidate, but he’s not going that far.
Who are you to question her gender identification?

from the safety of Galt's Gulch,
but this forum's close . . .
Which "University stated values" are these opinions "not consistent" with?
What is the policy for adherence to "University stated values", and what is the procedure for deviation?
Where in employees' contracts, handbooks, or policy and procedure manual is "adherence to University stated values" discussed and explained?
This is going to be a jackpot case for Crystal Dixon and her legal team. Crystal Dixon is going to find a dozen top notch lawfirms offering pro bono representation for this case if she’s willing to put her name to a lawsuit demanding millios in compensation.
This university president at best could offer profuse apologies and tender his resignation as of the conclusion the end of the fall term, anything less and the university is going to lose millions in settlement costs.
Imagine if you will, this sticker on a college campus:
“This zone has been declared safe for individuals who are conservative, Christian, freedom-loving, and questioning whether liberalism is the worst form of bigotry to express themselves and know they will be treated with respect.”
It will never happen.
If this dismissal stands, then the State Board that oversees higher level education should consider lifting the tax exempt non-profit status of that University. There is no public good that can come from such abusive leadership, hence no public minded reason to continue to subsidize the organization with tax exemption.
Here’s my E-mail to Jacob:
I just became aware of the termination of Miss Dixon for having shared an OPINION in the Toledo Free Press.
First...lets start with a simple definition:
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism. - American Heritage Dictionary
You have created a “chilled” atmosphere where people are now afraid to exercise their rights under the 1st Amendment to free speech for fear of retribution through loss of employment.
My son was seriously considering enrolling at UT for the upcoming semester....I have informed him that this will no longer be an acceptable choice....he will be instead be enrolled at Owens.
I will not spend one dime of my hard earned “prole” dollars at an institution that practices Fascist policies of intimidation for opinions not deemed “acceptable” or politically correct, while at the very same time coddling the most vile and outrageous behavior by anti-war activists on campus.
Have fun with the coming Media storm and national spotlight highlighting yet another embarrassment for North Western Ohio
You have become the very model of all that academics claim to decry...A thug in a position of power.....Well Done!.
Russell S. Crim
Not quite. While I agree with her position, the First Amendment says "Congress shall make no law..." It does not say that you can publish your opinions without consequence, only that the government cannot prevent you from speaking out (Need I also point out that there is no mention of "race discrimination"?).
"I disagree with a number of those view points and I stated at least on the face of it. They aren't consistent with University stated values," says UT president Dr. Lloyd Jacobs.
So if you publish your opinion contrary to the stated values of your employer in the University paper, be prepared to accept the consequences. Invoking the First amendment just shows your ignorance. After all, you were allowed to publish your views and are still free to do so. There are better arguments to be made for academic freedom of thought, and throwing race into the mix is counter productive, IMO.
Homosexuality is a developmental disorder of sexual differentiation, sort of like being Peter Pan and not growing up, only with a sexual twist. Declaring it an "alternative lifestyle" and allowing these people to go untreated is barbaric, somewhat like allowing our mentally ill to wander the streets unmedicated and defecating on themselves, again, to a matter of degree.
To any gays that may read this, I'm not homophobic. I'm not scared of homosexuals, because I'm a "true believer" hetero, and heavily armed (last statement was true, but satire).
What's frustrating is that McCaiin will too.
