The attack on the mailman was prefaced with a request to bum a cigarette.
Carrier Greg Nelson later decided that the question thrown at him by a group of boys as he delivered mail Thursday on the East Side likely was an attempt to size him up.
Within minutes, the youths chased, assaulted and robbed Nelson in what the U.S. Postal Service said is only the third such attack on a mail carrier in Columbus in the past 30 years.
"They didn't see me as a mailman, they saw me as an opportunity," said Nelson, 45, who has delivered mail for 15 years and for four years in the neighborhood where he was attacked.
The trouble began about 1:30 p.m. as Nelson made his rounds in the 5300 block of Ivyhurst Drive, in a neighborhood of homes and apartments southwest of E. Livingston Avenue and Noe-Bixby Road.
Nelson said he told the six suspects, who were between 14 and 19 years old, that he didn't have any cigarettes, and kept going.
One boy rushed up from behind and punched him repeatedly in the head. He ran for a nearby vacant house, where the group caught him.
"Someone hit me hard enough to drop me," he said. "When I hit the ground is when they really had some fun."
He said it seemed as though their punches and kicks were for entertainment.
They relented only when Nelson offered them his wallet, leaving him bruised and battered in the yard. He was treated at Mount Carmel East hospital and released.
Police and postal inspectors are investigating. Nelson said he's seen the group before.
Kathy L. Lucas, a Postal Service spokeswoman, said Nelson's route was divided among other carriers yesterday. Supervisors kept an eye on them, and the route was completed without further problems, she said.
"I think it was an isolated incident," Lucas said.
Nelson expects to work on Monday but said he's afraid to return to the same route. Though at first angry with his assailants, his emotions later changed.
"At this point," he said, "I feel sorry for them."

I don’t think this will continue. Some people didn’t get their checks that day.
...and a description of the felons...?
Would this be a Federal crime?
“Police are searching for 6-to-8 black teenagers, between 14-to-18 years old.”

End mail delivery to that neighborhood.
Attacks on a mailman delivering mail carry more penalties than just a regular person. I’m pretty sure federal stuff kicks in.
If this mailman had a concealed carry permit and a gun, he could have protected himself from the thugs.
Smith and Wesson - don’t leave home without it.
Kathy Lewis, it is only an isolated incident if it’s your ass not getting beaten. And now the guy feels sorry for them. They sized him up all right - any one of them could have taken him.
Youths Deliver Punch To Mail Carrier
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus postal carrier suffered a fractured cheek and numerous cuts and bruises when he was attacked Thursday, NBC 4 reported.
Six similarly dressed teens attacked him, as he walked his regular route on the East Side of the city.
But despite the frenzy of a footchase followed by a beating, he was able to recognize one of his assailants and give his name to police.
Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Haisson Kadeem Woody, 15, Friday in connection with the assault.
Haisson was not in custody and his whereabouts were unknown.
Local postal officials said the mail carrier was robbed during the attack. He remains off the job, and his route was split among other carriers Friday. A spokeswoman for the local post office said he'd be off the job until next week.
Kathy Lucas also asked that Columbus residents keep an eye out for their own carriers and report anything that looks threatening to Columbus police.
She told NBC 4 that the attack marked only the third time in 30 years that a mail carrier had been attacked while on his or her route. She expressed concern that wrong-doers might think carriers are delivering government stimulus checks and attempt to overwhelm postal workers. During the attack on Nelson, no mail was taken.
He described his attackers as wearing similar clothing: white T-shirts and red pants.
The attack began at 5313 Ivyhurst Dr. and culminated across the street.
Postal authorities indicated that if it appeared there were continued danger for postal deliverers in this area, they would consider taking the rarer step of curtailing delivery in the area.

The postal workers need to attend cultural awareness programs.
The gubmint must dump a huge amount of tax payer dollars into the area to fund self esteem building workshops for the disenfranchised youths.
“Usually the degenerate yoots avoid the mail carriers, since attacks on the carriers can result in non-delivery to the whole neighborhood. That tends to bring down the wrath of the neighbors on the culprits...”
Good point! When the handout checks stop arriving on time, the neighborhood will be pi$$ed!
Sorry, I guess I skimmed it too quickly...still, if they’d been white, it’d have been the centerpiece of the “story”.
“Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Haisson Kadeem Woody”
Time for this punk to be locked up and find out that he’ll be seeing plenty of “woodies” other then himself.
Good idea, but not surprisingly, no matter how well qualified, certified, or liscensed, mailmen are not allowed to carry weapons.
Yes, that is an option and has happened in the past. Mailmen can and do refuse to go where they have a reasonable expectation of bodily harm. They do not get fired for this.
Gosh darn those “teens” and their hula hoops and their hot rods and their be-bop music.
Yep, mailmen are usually untouchable: they bring the welfare checks.
Just some oppressed Obuma supporters seeking that “Change and Hope.”
Round them up and shoot them for the sub-humanoid criminals they have become in life.
“Fight Crime, Shoot First.”

Why weren’t these kids in school? /s
>>The gubmint must dump a huge amount of tax payer dollars into the area to fund self esteem building workshops for the disenfranchised youths.
Don’t forget the Midnight Basketball programs. They are a proven effective use of our tax dollars.
Commendable... when they kill him, he'll go straight to heaven.
Absolutely!
The FBI and/or the Postal Inspectors will investigate and prosecute.
“Good point! When the handout checks stop arriving on time, the neighborhood will be pi$$ed!”
I thought that they had gone to a kind of debit card to prevent such a thing.
I think you're right.
Twice in the last week I saw people in the grocery line trying to use them when the credit on them had run out. The first lady abandoned her groceries and stomped out when the checkout girl explained the balance was zero. The second one did the same thing but held the line up a lot longer. She couldn't understand a word of English when the checkout lady was trying to explain the card was empty. She just kept insisting in Spanish she was owed the food because she had the card.
"Checkout counter rage" is destined to become the newest thing.
And yet, despite that statistic, in this thread we'll likely see ill-informed claims about how these "young whipper-snapper punks" are just "reflections of the disintegration of culture".
So, because it's been only the 3rd attack on a MAILMAN in 30 years, you don't see a problem with this sort of thing (in general) in the inner cities due to in large part to the culture these little punks grow up in. I won't say "disintegration" because it's been this way in a lot of these communities for decades.
“youths” is a code-word. They don’t want us to know something. Problem is that we already believe we know who it is, so the news writer would be better off just saying what they deliberately refuse to say.
Ohio mail carrier says teens attacked while he walked route
....the postal carrier suffered a fractured cheek (bone, I'm assuming) along with cuts and bruises. The perps ought to be up on felony charges.
They were to tired from playing midnight basketball weren't able to get up so early.
Consequently, what I’m really saying here, all sarcasm aside,is that i hate the knee-jerk reactionism that occurs in the responses to this type of news story. Anyone who makes the kind of sweeping generalization I lampooned and calls themself a conservative is either a hypocrite or a moron, and probably both.
If the postal carrier had been packing even with a permit he would have been fired by now. Self protection and the 2nd Amendment are forbidden to Postal Employees.
Yes, but they'd be pissed at "The Man" for cutting off their drug money, not at the punks who caused it.
School is for Toms.
If Obama is elected President, he will inspire those misguided youths to change their ways and become productive members of society. If McCain is elected President, nothing will prevent them from becoming depraved thugs fit only for a prison cell.
That is the choice we face, America. Choose wisely.
Six rounds in the cylinder. Six punks looking for trouble.
Coincidence? I think not.
“Would this be a Federal crime?”
I was just thinking of that. Considering that he was carrying US Mail at the time of the attack, I am almost positive that it is a Federal crime.
Bush's fault ;-)
IIRC assault on a Federal employee (while at work) is a serious charge.
“Yes, but they’d be pissed at “The Man” for cutting off their drug money, not at the punks who caused it.”
And then they would riot, burning their tyrd-world neighborhoods to the ground.
Where is the union on this?
An assault with serious bodily harm has got to be a felony.
I would hope the union would be pushing for suspension of mail delivery until the community coughs up every last one of the perps, and they are sentenced to real time for their crime.
Non of this probation because of their ages crap.
Since the postal service is now run as a self-financing business, I’m not sure that USPS employees are considered federal employees any more. However, I’ve got a feeling (haven’t checked the law yet) that interfering with the delivery of the U.S. Mail probably still is a crime.
“Checkout counter rage is destined to be the newest thing.”Sarc intended? You may be right about that.Talk about rage....often while i’m in line, waiting to pay(in cash)the person at the front of the line has one of these d@mn cards.Problem is they don’t know how to use them. It’s not just a “zero” balance issue, but a lot of card holders need assistance swiping the card and then further assistance entering their pin number. This can be very time consuming and frustrating for others.
yup... mailmen, TV men and Phone men were always sacred lest you get cut off. no more i guess
Feral Black youts?
(It's ok, they were born and raised on your tax dollars)
