6 teens beat, rob mail carrier after asking for smoke
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH ^ | Saturday, May 10, 2008 | Theodore Decker

Posted on 05/10/2008 4:35:21 AM PDT by Comparative Advantage

The attack on the mailman was prefaced with a request to bum a cigarette.

Carrier Greg Nelson later decided that the question thrown at him by a group of boys as he delivered mail Thursday on the East Side likely was an attempt to size him up.

Within minutes, the youths chased, assaulted and robbed Nelson in what the U.S. Postal Service said is only the third such attack on a mail carrier in Columbus in the past 30 years.

"They didn't see me as a mailman, they saw me as an opportunity," said Nelson, 45, who has delivered mail for 15 years and for four years in the neighborhood where he was attacked.

The trouble began about 1:30 p.m. as Nelson made his rounds in the 5300 block of Ivyhurst Drive, in a neighborhood of homes and apartments southwest of E. Livingston Avenue and Noe-Bixby Road.

Nelson said he told the six suspects, who were between 14 and 19 years old, that he didn't have any cigarettes, and kept going.

One boy rushed up from behind and punched him repeatedly in the head. He ran for a nearby vacant house, where the group caught him.

"Someone hit me hard enough to drop me," he said. "When I hit the ground is when they really had some fun."

He said it seemed as though their punches and kicks were for entertainment.

They relented only when Nelson offered them his wallet, leaving him bruised and battered in the yard. He was treated at Mount Carmel East hospital and released.

Police and postal inspectors are investigating. Nelson said he's seen the group before.

Kathy L. Lucas, a Postal Service spokeswoman, said Nelson's route was divided among other carriers yesterday. Supervisors kept an eye on them, and the route was completed without further problems, she said.

"I think it was an isolated incident," Lucas said.

Nelson expects to work on Monday but said he's afraid to return to the same route. Though at first angry with his assailants, his emotions later changed.

"At this point," he said, "I feel sorry for them."

And yet, despite that statistic, in this thread we'll likely see ill-informed claims about how these "young whipper-snapper punks" are just "reflections of the disintegration of culture".

Attacks on a mailman delivering mail carry more penalties than just a regular person. I’m pretty sure federal stuff kicks in.

Usually the degenerate ‘yoots’ avoid the mail carriers, since attacks on the carriers can result in non-delivery to the whole neighborhood. That tends to bring down the wrath of the neighbors on the culprits...

Kathy Lewis, it is only an isolated incident if it’s your ass not getting beaten. And now the guy feels sorry for them. They sized him up all right - any one of them could have taken him.

Hmmm... One suspect ID'd. Fwiw, I think this headline is juvenile, considering the man was beaten by a mob.

Youths Deliver Punch To Mail Carrier

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus postal carrier suffered a fractured cheek and numerous cuts and bruises when he was attacked Thursday, NBC 4 reported.

Six similarly dressed teens attacked him, as he walked his regular route on the East Side of the city.

But despite the frenzy of a footchase followed by a beating, he was able to recognize one of his assailants and give his name to police.

Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Haisson Kadeem Woody, 15, Friday in connection with the assault.

Haisson was not in custody and his whereabouts were unknown.

Local postal officials said the mail carrier was robbed during the attack. He remains off the job, and his route was split among other carriers Friday. A spokeswoman for the local post office said he'd be off the job until next week.

Kathy Lucas also asked that Columbus residents keep an eye out for their own carriers and report anything that looks threatening to Columbus police.

She told NBC 4 that the attack marked only the third time in 30 years that a mail carrier had been attacked while on his or her route. She expressed concern that wrong-doers might think carriers are delivering government stimulus checks and attempt to overwhelm postal workers. During the attack on Nelson, no mail was taken.

He described his attackers as wearing similar clothing: white T-shirts and red pants.

The attack began at 5313 Ivyhurst Dr. and culminated across the street.

Postal authorities indicated that if it appeared there were continued danger for postal deliverers in this area, they would consider taking the rarer step of curtailing delivery in the area.

Stay tuned to NBC 4 and refresh nbc4i.com for more information on this developing story.

Yes, a total quagmire.
Time to cut and run.

The postal workers need to attend cultural awareness programs.

The gubmint must dump a huge amount of tax payer dollars into the area to fund self esteem building workshops for the disenfranchised youths.

Yes, that is an option and has happened in the past. Mailmen can and do refuse to go where they have a reasonable expectation of bodily harm. They do not get fired for this.

I think you're right.

Twice in the last week I saw people in the grocery line trying to use them when the credit on them had run out. The first lady abandoned her groceries and stomped out when the checkout girl explained the balance was zero. The second one did the same thing but held the line up a lot longer. She couldn't understand a word of English when the checkout lady was trying to explain the card was empty. She just kept insisting in Spanish she was owed the food because she had the card.

"Checkout counter rage" is destined to become the newest thing.

So, because it's been only the 3rd attack on a MAILMAN in 30 years, you don't see a problem with this sort of thing (in general) in the inner cities due to in large part to the culture these little punks grow up in. I won't say "disintegration" because it's been this way in a lot of these communities for decades.

Where is the union on this?

An assault with serious bodily harm has got to be a felony.

I would hope the union would be pushing for suspension of mail delivery until the community coughs up every last one of the perps, and they are sentenced to real time for their crime.

Non of this probation because of their ages crap.

Since the postal service is now run as a self-financing business, I’m not sure that USPS employees are considered federal employees any more. However, I’ve got a feeling (haven’t checked the law yet) that interfering with the delivery of the U.S. Mail probably still is a crime.
