Why Obama Is 'Skipping' West Virginia--and Getting Away with It
Newsweek ^ | May 10th, 2008 | Andrew Romano

Posted on 05/10/2008 11:45:14 AM PDT by The_Republican

The next state on the Democratic primary schedule is, of course, West Virginia, which has Tuesday all to its amoeba-shaped self. Why is it, then, that Barack Obama has yet to book a single stop in, say, Shepherdstown, Charleston, Philippi, Sutton, Fayetteville, Fairlea or Bluefield--all of which have already hosted either Bill or Hillary Clinton?

Because he has no chance of winning--and no one seems to care.

Appearing on ABC's Nightline back in November 2007, Obama slipped into Bob Dole mode for this slightly overconfident assessment of his electoral chances: "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there." The Mountain State seems unlikely to confirm his analysis--to put it mildly. Rasmussen released this year's first West Virginia poll in mid-March; it gave Clinton a 29-point advantage. The next survey, taken in early April, showed her ahead by a mere 15 points. But by the time May rolled around, Clinton's numbers had more than rebounded. In the latest polls, she now leads Obama by a whopping 40 to 43 points; he doesn't even break 24 percent. If those margins hold on Tuesday, the heavily white, heavily working-class West Virginia stands to be her strongest showing to date. Obama knows that no amount of campaigning could overcome Clinton's demographic advantages in Appalachia. Faced with a place that stands no chance of becoming "Barack Obama country," then, Barack Obama is choosing not to go there. Better to keep expectations low (much like Clinton did when she skipped Nebraska, Washington and Louisiana in February). "She is going to do very well in West Virginia," Obama said today in Beaverton, Ore., 2,600 miles from the Mountain State. "She will win... in all likelihood by [a] significant margin."

(For the record, Obama is still scrounging for votes--he's just not doing it in person.

If this turns out to be the case, I'd love to listen to the MSM spin Obama getting his clock cleaned.

Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there.

For what its worth, that is a classic Muslim trope. 'We were there once: therefore it's ours". Just saying ...

The spin will be that Hillary does well with white downscale working class voters. West Virginia is full of such voters. That state doesn’t have big college communities full of affluent liberals, and doesn’t have a large black population either.

With the projections showing that Obama has all but clinched the nomination, they have already taken into account that Obama loses big in West Virginia and Kentucky.

West Virginia only has 28 delegates also. It’s just not going to help Hillary very much.

Really a stupid move, like not campaigning in the black areas of Philadelphia or showing up much in Philly’s suburbs. Who’s handling this guy? If it were me I’d actually have him live in one of those gully shacks in the Blue Ridge mountains, where thousands of fireflys glow in total darkness on summer nights. Almost heaven, which is maybe why Obama shivers and runs from it.

No, WV must be #58 and apparently Obambi is not going to get there at all now.....

It’s full of those KKKlansmen of the Robert Byrd variety.

So it’s nice to know that Obambi has visited all 57 states that he plans to get to in this primary season - what an achievement! Maybe he’ll get to #s 58, 59, and 60 in the general election campaign!

Exactly!!! How can this man be running for president when he does not even know how many states are in the union? I understand he said he has been to 57 states and has one more to visit. The Democrat party has sunk so low they are running this ignoramus for election to the highest office in the nation? Unbelievable!!!

Where things become even uglier for the “R”’s and “us” McCAin has a hard time drawing those voters as well, things like Global Warming are not on that demographic’s agenda, not losing one’s job to China..is.

57 states, indeed!

How can ANYONE question the Affirmative Action role in Obama’s educational “accomplishments” - as well as his hateful little shrew of a wife?

Their hate for the America we love, our past, our icons, our holidays — is discernible in much of what they do and say.
They mean NOTHING to this man or his wife..

Yet - he wishes to preside over all of us..

Simple. There isn't a large enough black population voting 95% for the black candidate to balance out the white racism.

So, will that Senator actively support Obamalamadingdong, if he can accomplish 'active' status?

Just an observation - all these years the democrats have 'supported' blacks and were rewarded with practically 100% of the segment vote - but, it's unlikely that any democrat thought that a black would be heading the POTUS ticket anytime soon. The democrat 'support program' didn't have that event in mind as a goal.

But, as the preacher stated, the chickens have come home to roost and those chickens, once Obama loses in the general will turn into huge, angry chickens - therefore, let the entertainment continue as I have enjoyed every minute of this race on the democrat side, seeing democrats continue to eat their own, seeing hillary go down it flames - it simply doesn't get better than that.

WV in play if Obama is nominated??? Not only in play, but it’s in the GOP column from day one. West Virginia will see McCain and at least think “Hey, he looks like GrandUncle Dwayne, I’ll pull that lever”. If Obama gets 40% of the WV vote in the Fall I’d be surprised.

All the Obama camp would have had to do is spread a rumor that HRC is a gunaphobe and she'd lose in WV. There was a petition that showed up in the convenince/country stores that stated firearms would have to listed on tax returns if Gore was elected. The petition was directed to Byrd and Rockefeller to stop the action. I was amazed at the number of signatures. Gore was toast way before Carlton Heston toured the state.

Obama will lose to Clinton by at least 30% points, and may lose that big to McCain in the Fall. Even if Hillary ran into everyone’s home and stole their guns, shown on You Tube and broadcast live into the living room, she’d still beat Obama by 30 points. It’s now officially a Red State in the Fall, and the GOP can put its money to good use elsewhere.

LOL...which is why I find it so delicious when they refer to him as, "the conscience of the Senate." It says a lot that the conscience has a special staff to keep him from wandering off on his own.

I say, let McCain make an Affirmative Action pick for VP - a black conservative whose resume wouldn't support a presidential bid, but would not compare too poorly with Obama's thin resume. Only a black will be able to make the case that having your children's moral education led by Jeremiah Wright for 20 years is actually a disqualification for the office of POTUS. And he won't actually have to say anything directly - just serve as a counterexample of the "everybody (black) does it" trope that Obama has tried to hide behind.

Note that the Constitution actually promotes affirmative action in the selection of the VP nominee when it stipulates that a VP nominee can't win his own state's electoral votes if he comes from the same state as the POTUS nominee of his party. That of course was to unify the country geographically; there is more reason now, as Rev. Wright's rhetoric illustrates, to unite the country across its racial divide.

How about J.C. Watts (info a bit out of date) , former Congressman from Oklahoma, also former QB of the OU football team. He demonstrated more "leadership" ability in that position than Obama ever has, and more since then as well, as Chairman of the House Republican Conference for example. He also served on the Armed Services Committee. He was also a youth minister and associate pastor from '87 to '94, before being elected to Congress. After choosing not to run again, he became head of GOPAC for 2 years. He served longer than Obama at the national level, 4 terms as Congressman, 8 years to B. Hussein's 3 years and 5 months as a Sinator.

He'd be a great VP, regardless of the color of his skin.

Interesting idea, but there is no need to go down that road and the case can be made without having to use the VP nominee to make it. McCain needs to pick a younger, enlightened person - no baggage and he will win.
