Tim O'Hare wins Farmers Branch mayor's race, but hardline anti-immigration candidates fail in other cities
11:44 PM CDT on Saturday, May 10, 2008
Tim O'Hare, who made a name leading Farmers Branch's efforts to drive out illegal immigrants, was elected mayor of the Dallas County suburb Saturday. Meanwhile, incumbent mayors and city council members beat challengers who wanted more immigration enforcement in Irving where campaigns were highly heated and often personal. Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller, beset by questions about her past, lost in an Election Day onslaught by challenger Ron Branson. While Mr. Branson had made a tougher stance on immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, the race appeared to turn in his favor over the questions about Ms. Miller's past. She had led by 9 percentage points in early voting, but early voting ended a day before a Dallas Morning News story delved into her background, which included her statements to acquaintances about singing backup for singers Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne and statements about a brother dying in Vietnam. She said that her days as a singer were so long ago that she was not surprised the famous singers did not remember her. After her father said there was no brother who had died in Vietnam, she said her father has Alzheimer's disease. Later, she said the "brother" was actually an unrelated young man raised by her family. She declined to provide his name, citing painful circumstances.

What BIAS on the part of the editor / headline writer!!!
And my congratulations to Tim O'Hare !! Way to go!
Here is MY note to the two writers of this article:

Gentlemen:
I know you don’t SELECT the headlines, but can you PLEASE let your editor know that his BS “Anti-immigration candidates” headline is MISLEADING and just plain WRONG!
I am NOT “anti-immigration”, and neither are any candidates running for major office. It is ILLIGAL immigration that we are opposed to. My wife is Chinese and we got her over her LEGALLY via a fiancee visa five years ago. She then applied for and received her permanent residency (”green card”). She has now applied for citizenship and has an interview set for this June and will hopefully get citizenship shortly thereafter.
So while I am FOR enforcing our immigration laws, I am NOT ANTI-IMMIGRATION. Get it???
Get the FACTS straight please. The misleading headline that implies that people who want immigration laws ENFORCED are RACIST BIGOTS is just WRONG and totally misleading, and shows bias on the editor/headline writers part.
Thank you,

Feel free to email them yourselves, too! :)
Ask them why they are against legal immigration?
That stuns them out here.
haha!
Zachary!
I’ll remember that, Grampa. Thanks. :^D
Gotta head to work now.
I’ll check back here later tonight and/or in the morning.
Have a SUPER day, folks! :^D
Exceptional bias.
The “hardliners” in Farmers Branch and Carrollton won three elections.
Three incumbents in Irving, all of whom favor some level of immigration enforcement, won three elections against “hardliners.”
That's a tie.
Not what you would expect after reading the headline.
Also, several paragraphs were devoted to developing the idea that the Carrollton mayor lost to a “hardliner” because of personal issues, not immigration issues.
That may be true.
However, no analysis was done to explain if the Irving candidates beat “hardliners” because of immigration issues, or because of other issues.
The Fort Worth Star Telegram has a headline today “Foes of illegal immigration prevail”. First sentence in article, “Local crackdown on illegal immigration got another round of public approval Saturday, etc” Rest of article is on page 7B.
Maybe the editors of the Dallas paper should come live over on this side of the metroplex to see the real problem.
Gentlemen:
As a long-ago member of the Fourth Estate, I still flinch when reporters are called "presstitutes". No doubt that epithet, or worse, will be hurled your way by those who don't realize that reporters don't write the headlines.
"Anti-immigrant"? Can you spell A-G-E-N-D-A? The bad part is that reporters get tarred with the same brush as their Politically Correct editors, and once people get wind of bias, the whole article is under suspicion.
The problem that everyone but the editors see is the ILLEGAL immigrants who cut into the front of the line and cop an attitude, not the legal ones who play by the rules.
Please pass this on up the line - occasionally "stuff" DOES flow uphill.
Sic 'em. (smiley)
One of them replied:
Thanks for taking the time to write and point out the headlines on our site. The Web site headlines have been changed. Im sorry if the statements came across as a bias, but assure you nothing of the sort was intended. Thanks again for your feedback and giving me a heads up. Im forwarding your e-mail to my editor.
The headline now reads "Tim O'Hare wins Farmers Branch mayor's race"
Excellent message well worded there.
Thanks for writing them and for sharing your note and for
posting his reply.
I got a reply as well. It’s from Brandon Formby and he

So he did push the heat back to the editor, it appears. :)
That’s great.
Your experiences with the DMN has been identical to mine,
it appears. I dumped them back in the ‘90s. At the time,
I just couldn’t see having the RAG littering my front yard
when I could get the same thing FREE on the Internet.
I have often found them to be Liberal biased and anti-
Conservative. Fair and balanced? Forget it. “All the
Lib Cra* ... that’s what we print”, that’s the DMN!
Have a SUPER week! :)
