Bill Clinton Promises No Matter the Outcome, His Family Will Stand Behind the Nominee

May 11, 2008 10:54 AM

ABC News' Sarah Amos reports: Speaking on behalf of his wife at the annual Truman Dinner in Billings, Mont., Saturday, former President Bill Clinton assured the crowd that no matter the outcome of the Democratic nomination, his family and Hillary's supporters would firmly stand behind the party's nominee.

"I also wanna say, on instructions, I've been a Democrat all my life," he said. "And I've been working in these campaigns since I was a young man. I remember what it was like in 1980, when the people who didn't win tore our party up. And I'm here to tell ya that however these last states come out, my candidates, our family and our supporters will be here to get a victory in November for the Democrats. It is too important. We've got to turn this country around. And we will do it."

The crowd rose in a standing ovation at the sentiment.

It was a different and much more party-focused tone than Clinton has been using on the trail since last Tuesday's primaries in Indiana and North Carolina. Clinton seemed very happy to be in Montana, meeting with local tribal leaders before his remarks, and sharing stories with the crowd about the last time he rode a horse in Billings.

Of course they’ll stand by Obama - it’s the only way to slip the knife into his back.

Interesting discussion on Fox (Wallace) this morning.

All panelists agreed that Obama would NEVER choose Hitlery as VP because it would be impossible to control Bill Clinton, and Obama would have to be watching his back constantly to stop Bill from undermining any kind of political agenda.

Given what Bill’s done for Hillary via embarrassing comments, my guess is that they’ll run from him.

All sarcasm aside, this is not good news.

It is an outrider & signal that they are going to back Obama in the General, and there is no way that this is good for Conservatives at all.

Howard Dean, the Democratic party chairman, whose once-promising 2004 presidential bid collapsed in Iowa, said he spent months trying to persuade his supporters to rally behind John Kerry, the nominee. And they did not even dislike Mr Kerry. Gary Hart said that after he lost his divisive primary battle against Walter Mondale in 1984, he worked tirelessly – and held more than 40 campaign events – imploring his supporters to back the nominee. “And I was not able to move [them],” he said.

To believe that you must believe the Clintons give a sh#t about the democrat party. The sole purpose of Clinton Inc. is to amass power and wealth at any cost. They will do for Obama about as much as Reagan did for Ford.

Exactly.

Either that or Bill will have a big medical problem and Hillary will leave the spot lite for Obama to stand by her ailing Mans side.

This way if something happens to Obama as rumoured the Clintons have an alibi.

Because nobody is naive enough to plan for another losing campaign by another loser after losing 11 million the first time.

There is no bid or position for 2012, politics is reality played out in the here and now where winning is everything and losing is not some hare brained scheme to “position” oneself for 2012, it is just losing.

Hillary has a chance to become the 1st female VP in history and she is doing everything that she can to make that happen. Right now.

Interesting point.
While I don't believe that is the only the reason, it is certainly a central aspect.

I'm pretty sure that deep underneath those 8 years of unflagging support, frenzy, and shouting for everything Clinton no matter what, they were smoldering over their “triangulation” of left and right issues.
I also believe that this has been fanned into open flames again, and they now see in Obama a more pure leftist who will promote the socialist agenda far more ruthlessly.

Given the fact that they are also poised to increase their congressional representation to impressive levels, (Thanks for that, McCain) alone with the supine, wishy washy GOP candidates and a muddled message, they may very well be right.

I fear for the Republic.

Who cares who you stand behind willie? The people will have spoken and hilllereee is out so...it doesn’t much matter what you say or what you do or whom you stand behind...you have both shown the world your lack of class, dignity and character...you are who you are and everyone knows it. So, try to stay out of the spotlight can’t you? This is NOT about YOU. It is about the Democratic Nomineee which is Barack Obama. So, I guess all you and hilllereee have left is to yak it up so you can both get face time on TV. Leave with some dignity now while you can. IF you had any dignity to begin with. hillleree’s NEVER had any and if YOU did ever which I doubt...it is gone forever now. Bye.
