In Beaverton, outside Portland, where Obama visited a small software firm, employee Jack Randall, a chemist, said he was an independent who had voted for Republicans in the past -- including Bush in 2000 -- but that he would vote for Obama this fall.
"He's very personable, intelligent and thoughtful. There was a lot of intensity of data about what he's going to do, it wasn't just the fluff that we've been hearing about," said Randall, 56, whose Republican wife is also backing Obama. For him and his colleagues at the firm, he said, a key issue setting Obama apart from Clinton and presumptive GOP nominee John McCain was their support for a holiday in the federal gasoline tax. "That made many of us laugh," he said. "Anyone who knows arithmetic knows it's not going work. It's clearly pandering."
At a Mexican restaurant in Woodburn, Ore., Obama got into a brief conversation with Marcie Crawford, a 41-year-old social service worker. She later said that she's generally voted Republican but was planning to pick Obama over McCain this fall. "He's believable," she said. "He seems to believe in what I believe in, the need for changing the way things are. He's more forward looking, not backward looking." She felt this way even though, she said, "I understand that some of the things he stands for I'm against."
And among several thousand turning out to see Obama in Albany, Ore., was Tom Ottenheimer, a 44-year-old independent and engineer who he had voted for Republican presidential candidates in the past but was considering Obama over McCain because of the Iraq war. "I don't know why we got into the war," he said. "It's like a fistfight. I wouldn't want to hit you until you had wound up to punch me, right?"

Some amazing logical contortions from “Republicans” who are considering voting for Obama.
“He seems to believe in what I believe in, the need for changing the way things are...”
PS: I thinc McCain is completely toast in Oregon. He might want to not waste his time here, unless he picks RINO Gordon Smith as his VP.
Sounds like she has been completely brainwashed by rhetoric. Shows you that there are stupid Republicans even outside Free Republic.
cult member
I came to this conclusion after reading some their quoted statements, such as, ""I don't know why we got into the war," he said. "It's like a fistfight. I wouldn't want to hit you until you had wound up to punch me, right?" So what was 9-11 you mow-rawn?
Plus, these people seem awfully wishy-washy about their core beliefs. They lean toward Obama just because he's articulate. Well, Hitler was articulate, too.
Haha, good one!!
How much more proof is needed to see the GOP is going the way of socialism.
“Republicans” are no longer Conservatives, just unprincipled moderate Democrats.
Any Republican voting for Obama is not a Republican and not an American. IMO, anyone voting for Obama is someone that is Anti-Semitic, anti-America, anti-military, anti-American Constitution, anti-white, and pro-terrorist. Obama wants to turn the United States of America into a third-world country along with the aid and assistance of his America hating wife. Those two deserve each other.
Seems to be the TALKING POINTS for the rags today.....”Young Evangelicals for Obama” was in the Seattle Times this morning.....http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2004406277_evangvote11m.html
Hmm, Fred Thompson had an ‘intensity of data’ about what he wanted to do. In fact, he was the only credible candidate who started with white papers and specific policy ideas.
Where was this A-hole then?
We have to face facts that there are a LOT of people in the country who are not really into ideology and vote based on other factors or shifting whim.
Such weak-minded fools are easy prey for a slick Marxist demagogue like Obama.
LOL.
RNC RINO’s coming.........home........to......roost.
Besides we have conservatives supporting McCain.
“I don’t know why we got into the war,” he said. “It’s like a fistfight. I wouldn’t want to hit you until you had wound up to punch me, right?”
This reasoning is obscenely childish. People fail to recognize that if NBCs are released in our major cities, there will no longer *be* a Republic.
Well that must make him one of those mythical “independents” that McCain is counting on to rush to his side.
Of course, any GOP candidate has a great shot in Oregon, right?
PS: I thinc McCain is completely toast in Oregon. He might want to not waste his time here, unless he picks RINO Gordon Smith as his VP.
So we know who he voted from in '04, what's surprising about this? Not exactly a turning tide, is it?
Republicans are no longer Conservatives, just unprincipled moderate Democrats.

Then ask them what they have, and America has, to gain by putting a socialist, empty-suited, nutcase, anti-American in the White House....I think they will have touble with that answer. If they say “CHANGE”...well, just hand them the kool-aid bucket.
Period.
The messiah has that effect on people...........
At this point anyone that needs more proof is an idiot.
I’ve renamed the RNC to RNSC.
Republican National Socialist Committee.
Clearly, you do not appreciate that such old-fashioned nonsense (such as patriotism, or that one has to be pro-military) is passe, and irrelevant to electing the CinC. What is more important is how you sound, and whether you stand for change.
We know this already from the DUmmie boards. However they probably implied a different analogy.
I think these “independent-minded Republicans” claim to have voted Republican at some point in the past, just so as to cloak themselves in a veneer of impartiality and open-mindedness that they think enhances their credibility. It also helps them get their quotes in. We do not know how many people this reporter talked to, how many claimed to be life-long Democrats. Their views were not printed. Only those who claimed to be Republicans got their names in. It could be the Greg Packer effect.
I didn’t know Oregon had any Republicans.
It is the only state on the West Coast with a Republican (INO) Senator.
Yeah... Obama is the most liberal member of the Senate and Republicans are moving in droves to vote for him. LOL! Even the most liberal Republicans would have a very hard time swallowing the B.S. that Obama spews.
Somebody should check out these so called Independent Republican voters... My guess is that they've never had a membership or offered a dime to a Republican candidate in their lives... And the last time that they did vote Republican?
When Nixon ran in 1972 just about everybody voted Republican, so maybe that's when they voted Republican. That was also the last time that the DemocRATs ran an exclusively anit-war candidate McGovern.
McCain has to make this an election about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, which are both part of the larger war against Islamic Terrorist & Fascist.
Obama is going to move to the right and start acting like he'll be tough on America's enemies, but the United States and the rest of the world can not afford a mistake like Jimmy Carter again. Carter's failed Presidency is the reason why most of this of this Terrorist turmoil exist 28 years later, do you really want it to continue for another 3 decades?
Are there really any Republicans in the state of Oregon? I am surprised.
see 29
Yes, Ya beat me to it.
these are the same fake republicans who voted for algore and fake republicans who voted for kerry and the same fake republicans who support homsoexual marriage and the same fake republicans who were supporting ronpaul.
Anecdotal BS.
This should come as no surprise.
We had so-called conservatives --- self-professed, albeit --- right here on FR who were backing both the liberal Giuliani and Romney in the GOP primaries.
OBAMA = CARTER
love it!
BUMP!
I've never encountered a social worker with anything other than "progressive" political leanings, myself.
This country will never recover from an Obama presidency. Even now, McCain is considered the “far right” in this race and we all know better than that.
I fear for our nation, Quite seriously.
Thank you.
Oh, the ol’ “Guilt Sandwich” trick again huh.
No, nobody is putting a “Socialist” in office, including McCain. (A Socialist) WE vote the way the Constitution provides. Because we do not vote for the current GOP menu does not make our vote morph into a vote for a Democrat/Socialist. It simply means we voted the way we have the right to vote. Nothing more, nothing less.
I know it angers your type that you can’t control us, but then that is why we are still Conservative. We have the integrity to stand firmly for what we believe and we will not pander to any counter philosophy because the opposition is just too scary for spineless moderates.
The whole reason we are still a nation today is because there were a few Principled Men who stuck to their beliefs in spite of the dangers of doing so.
Go vote the way you vote, and so will we. But put the focus back in your own yard. You have to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything. (And it looks like you have done just that.) In retrospect, on your behalf, I could care less.
True, I have had long term relatives there for over 100 years. They now call it “Orefornia”. They are looking to sell out and move to Idaho because their real estate taxes etc, have doubled.
They are even higher in Idaho. Plus the idiots there have sales tax. We don’t.
The Left coaches its people to claim to the media that they are Republicans, knowing the MSM never investigates these claims, but rather broadcasts them wholesale.
I've been thinking about this subject a lot lately and wondering where these fakes came from and how they gained office, and this is what I came up with. It's my fault and the fault of people like me.
Before a local election, I don't take the time to closely study the record of anyone running as a Republican; I spend all my time looking closely at the Democrat candidate's scurrilous record and on election day I go and vote against the Democrat SOB.
I'm afraid there are more than a few voters like me who think they can't go wrong as long as they vote for whomever calls themselves a Republican and runs against the obviously worthless Democrat. I have noticed that more than a few Democrats will change party affiliation and will run as Republican in a local election just to take advantage of those of us who aren't paying close attention. All they have to do is call themselves a Republican and more than a few of us will for vote them just to vote against an obvious Democrat slug. And, of course, the local Democrat controlled media will not bring this to their readers attention.
It's our fault we get these fake Republicans and we are going to have to take the time to pay closer attention in our local elections to include the primary elections.
Go vote the way you vote, and so will we.

Nice try. I am a bit old-fashioned. I have requirements for my candidates that reflect patriotism, qualification, and judgement that comes with experience.
Give it a try.
Horse crap. Barack Hussein Obama is a friggin’ socialist hack.
In this race she is the “moderate”. I say that only recognizing how crazy it is to have these 3 choices.
