Too much, too late, Hillary
The Seattle Times ^ | May 11, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 05/12/2008 4:39:38 AM PDT by NCDragon

WASHINGTON — By the time Hillary Clinton figured out how to beat Barack Obama, it was too late. When she began the race in 2007 thinking she was in for a coronation, she claimed the center in order to position herself for the real fight, the general election. She simply assumed the party activists and loony left would fall in behind her.

However, as Obama began to rise, powered by the party's Net-roots activists, she scurried left, particularly with her progressively more explicit renunciation of the Iraq war. It was a fool's errand. She would never be able to erase the stain of her original war vote and she remained unwilling to do an abject John Edwards self-flagellating recantation. It took her weeks even to approximate the apology the left was looking for, and by then it was far too late. The party's activist wing was by then unbreak-ably betrothed to Obama.

But going left proved disastrous for Clinton. It abolished all significant policy differences between her and Obama, the National Journal's 2007 most liberal senator. On health care, for example, her attempts to turn a minor difference in the definition of universality into a major assault on Obama fell flat. With no important policy differences separating them, the contest became one of character and personality. Matched against this elegant, intellectually nimble, hugely talented newcomer, she had no chance of winning that contest.

Clear, cogent, and, I think, accurate analysis. It’s funny that our analysis of the Democrats revolves around the topic, “Who do you think would be worse for America.” While we may disagree on who that person is, we conservatives tend to agree on the harm they would do the country. Personally, I think the Clintons are worse (and we must not discuss Hillary as an individual, any more than we would discuss a CEO as independent from the corporation he is a part of). If for no other reason, they have their Stalinist machine assembled and tuned in the hangar and they are just waiting to open the door and unleash it on America again. Obama would end up spinning his Socialist wheels for at least a year, maybe two, before he had a machine assembled that could effectively implement his communist agenda. By that time, Clinton, Inc. now destroyed and bankrupt, would be unleashing a pointless war against his policies.

I hope so, but I just can’t let myself believe she’s finished quite yet.
You never know what these people are capable of.

She was worried about the white guys she was up against and she likely had something on all of them.

Obama as an opponent wasn't even in her mind.

After all, she was the wife of the first black president and had the black vote. Just a minor miscalculation.

...hugely talented...

I thought we weren't supposed to indulge in racial stereotyping.
Or maybe Krauthammer isn't just figuratively performing a Lewinsky on Obeyme.

It ain’t over according to the Beast. And I just heard (unless I’m dreaming) the voice of Al D’Amato on the tv in the other room, saying Obama’s values are questionable and he will lose to McCain in November. A “not one of us” charge.
There is still plenty of time for the Democrats to heed the warnings and shift to Hillary.

You weren't dreaming...I saw that, too. Al was good, especially with his—how dare Barry call small-town folks bitter and wife Michelle say she has never been proud of America. He ended with Barry not supporting the flag.

Hillary has to consider what would devastate her ego the most...Losing to Obama...or to McCain.

It still hasn't dawned on her that a lot of Obama votes were actually anti-Hillary votes. Those blacks who voted for Obama were Hillary loyalists....a bloc she had counted on.

Andrew Breitbart told the Friends this morning that Hollywood has turned on Mrs. Clinton...she is now being treated like a (gasp!) Republican. With Ariana Huffington leading the pack, it's Obamamania only—Clinton supporters are not welcome.

That was pretty crude- Krauthammer is a reasonable analyst not deserving of that kind of remark (whether or not you agree with him)

Let’s leave that stuff over a for the DUhmmies at D.U.

Don't get your lucky rocketship underpants in a wad.

Describing a black man as hugely talented is an ill-considered turn of phrase that strikes me as funny.

Describing Obamessiah as "hugely talented" and "intellectually nimble" (have you heard him speak without benefit of a teleprompter?) pretty much undermines your defense of Krauthammer as a reasonable analyst.

Still, we're all FRiends here, so I'll try to dial back the crudity.

It’s pure fantasy.

Obama is all done. He should go back to the senate with what’s left of his integrity (assuming he ever had any, he’s a d’RAT after all).

The Clinton Machine is starting to spool up and when it reaches operating speed, after June 3, Obama will be toast.

Clinton Modus Operandi:

Deny, Delay, Destroy.

We have moved to Phase III and Team Clinton will destroy Obama, with some dirt that will render him impotent if not bring into question his ability to get re-elected to his senate seat in two years.

As sure as the sun rises in the east.

I will believe it’s finally over when I hear her voice crack and see the tears during her concession speech. Not one minute before. And even if they do try again after she geta a trainer and a facelift in 2012, I doubt if they’d do as well then. That’s being proven out to me every day-they’re (Clinton machine) becoming more and more desperate, because they believe there’s never going to be a better chance.
