McCain appeals to independents with environment pitch
CNN ^ | Peter Hamby

Posted on 05/12/2008 11:51:13 AM PDT by kingattax

(CNN) -- Kicking off a week-long push seen as outreach to independent and Democratic voters in crucial swing states, John McCain on Monday will deliver a speech outlining his vision for combating global warming.

"We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," McCain will say in Portland, Oregon, according to prepared remarks. "The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."

McCain's commitment to fight global warming puts him at odds with some Republicans in Congress and with the Bush administration, which has not made climate change a top priority.

McCain's stance on carbon emissions places him closer on the environmental spectrum to Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

In his speech, the Arizona senator will propose capping carbon emissions incrementally, with the goal of returning to 1990 emission levels by the year 2020 using a cap-and-trade program.

Can someone explain how a cap and trade system works, and why it is a good system?

Under these carbon credit systems, isn’t it just a feel good thing? Because those who buy carbon credits are still producing too much pollution, right? They simply get to feel good about “fighting global warming”? Is that how it works?

What gets me about that is that those producing too much carbon still get to produce the pollution. How does paying somebody else for a carbon credit reduce the pollution they are so worried about?

Speaking of Al Gore and those guys, why is it that, at the time of Kyoto in 1997, the U.S. didn’t ratify Kyoto? \

And why in 1997 and while Clinton and Gore were still in office, why the heck didn’t they fight global warming then? When they were in a position of power, why didn’t they fight with all their might for this cause which is the greatest challenge manking has ever faced? If Al Gore and all the Dems. so firmly believe that, why didn’t the Clinton administration get firmly behind it? If it’s an issue that transcends politics, why weren’t they fighting this cause when they might have made a difference????????

This isn’t a mobilizing issue and it is really a waste of McCain’s time. The only thing I can think of is he thinks there is a good chance of picking up some moderate liberals and green independents which are exactly the people who he isn’t going to get. He should stick to what works for him, fiscal responsibility, a strong military, and a strong economy. He might as well go pick up Huckabee as his VP for all that this is worth to him.

The fallacy of human induced global warming has nothing to do with the environment. It is one of many methods that socialists use to replace our Democratic Republic with socialism and socialist John McCain is leading the charge in Congress.

What gets me is they want to combat gw, we have to “act now” but they don’t have a clue as to what we would do about it, other than sucking up more money for the government machine. Just like the oil crisis, the only thing they can think to do about it is tax it.

If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it, if it stops moving, subsidize it.

We conservatives must choose which fights are worth fighting.

Is global warming (GW) total bunk? Pretty much.

Have humans been good stewards of our God given resources? Not really. There is lots of room for improvement.

The public arena, (foolishly) has bought into the idea the GW is real and that it is partially a man made problem.

The McCain team has made a decision that they don’t want to lose this election because they’re on the “unpopular” side of Global Warming. They are intentionally trying to take this issue/advantage away from the democrats.

And that, my FRiends, is what you call brilliant political strategy.

The fight over GW isn’t worth fighting.

McCain has indicated that he would back justices like Alito and Roberts. Personally I’d prefer Scalia and Thomas, but I’m not in a position where I can be too choosy.

We know that Obama will back justices like JP Stevens and RB Ginsburg. And that is totally unacceptable.

The choice is clear. McCain in ‘08.

Wrong question. Here is the correct one.

Why are a few FReepers embracing 'finger-in-the-wind' politics versus embracing the truth and using that as a political tool.

The truth will set you free, not pandering to liberal idiots.

I grew up in Louisiana so I have a better name for it, POPULISM.

Populism is one of the worst forms of Democracy to ever rear it's ugly head. It is the foundation for tyrany. Once people start voting for you for all the wrong reasons, it's over.

"The fight over GW isn’t worth fighting."

Not one inch should ever be given to a liberal. Not one damned inch! Those willing to cede any issue to liberals should get the hell out of the way and let fighters take over the game, unlike the limp-wristed, purse-swinging, bed-wetters who have run the RNC since the death of Lee Atwater.

That is the question!

Perfect example:

Maelstorm at #16 wrote...”He (McCain) should stick to what works for him, fiscal responsibility, a strong military, and a strong economy.”

...And that will get McCain about 40% of the popular vote.

McCain is running this race to win. Although I’m not a big McCain fan, I’ve been very impressed with the campaign he has waged thus far.

Even if Obama wins Illinois, New York, and California by 75%, McCain could still win electorally.

Cap and trade lets the market decide the cheapest way to reduce CO2. It is not pollution as many here have explained, only implicated in warming. Reductions in CO2 will be modest and those reductions will do nothing to change the warming. The junkscience site has a good page on this, it would take trillions to cool the world by 1 degree using the assumptions from the models. The Euros have been practicing it since 2005, and have netted good feelings and some nice government revenue, but no reductions in CO2.

Can someone explain how a cap and trade system works, and why it is a good system?

I'll give it a shot:

• The government first sells licenses (yay--more "revenue" to fund bigger government! /s)

• The government then sets up a major bureaucracy to administer such trading scheme.

• The govenrment then sets up a slew of regulations and hires a slew of regulators to monitor, penalize, and enforce said regulations.

• After buying their license (allowing it to exist and produce), U.S. businesses are given a MANDATORY cap, based on junk science, as to how much "greenhouse gas" they are permitted to emit.

• If they find themselves unable to operate under said emission limit, they will be required to purchase a "carbon credit" from a non-emitter or pay a penalty.

• Most businesses involved in the scheme fall into two categories categories 1) those trying to actually produce something useful (the emitters) or 2) those who have been gaming the system collecting assets that qualify for "carbon credits." Many of these assets are not in the U.S.--it could be a otherwise-useless piece of land in some third-world country that they promise not to develop.

• Carbon "markets" (similar to a NYSE) are established to facilitate the trading of "carbon credits." The Chicago Climate Exchange has been established to do this already, created by Michael Milken cohort Richard Sandor who has been helping the Al Gore's and John McCain's of the world push this scam in the United States. These exchanges will create jobs for "traders" -- the traders and exchanges raking in trillions for doing nothing more than buying and selling hot air.

• U.S. businesses will now be asked to compete in a global market which they will be unable to do. They will pay extoriton money (buying carbon credits) making domestic products more expensive until it becomes obvious they can no longer be competitive. The U.S. economy will suffer and consumers, having trouble paying for the very basics, will be buying products from third-world hell-holes who aren't subject to the same strict greenhouse gas limits.

• Bottom line: This is the greatest wealth-distribution scheme ever conceived.

I'm sure I forgot something.

The university I went to for my first degree offered a BS in Meteorology (my first degree) from the College of Natural Sciences. A person earning that one had to take Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and other hard science courses.

They have now eliminated Meteorology and offer a Arts degree in Climatology from the College of Social Science! There are no higher math or science courses required and the semiannual publication they send me is full of unscientific garbage about gender and cultural problems interacting with the environment.
