NEW YORK - The Brooklyn Bridge is 125 years old this month and New York City is getting ready to celebrate.
The city on Monday announced an array of activities including a special bridge lighting, concerts, lectures, film series and family events.
The five-day festivities will kick off on May 22 with a performance by the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, and a Grucci fireworks presentation.
The bridge connects Brooklyn and Manhattan across the East River, and is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country.
It will be lit up in an array of colored lights from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. from May 22 through Memorial Day.
When I was a little kid my dad took me to the 100th.
It was being built... while Custer fell at the Little Bighorn.
Just last night I watched a DVD with Johnny Maestro singing “Worst that could happen”.
One of Ken Burns’ first big documentaries was about Roebling and the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.
I hear it’s for sale!
No, not any more, I just bought it!
I hope they plan for strong security measures as that would be a target for terrorism.
I drafted the design drawings.
By hand.
The lighting was enjoyed by all - in fact, after the 100th the renewed interest in the bridge made it a more popular thoroughfare for bicyclists.
I would expect that the ride would have been a less appealing prospect of an evening if not for the new lighting.

Wow I am old, my son was a few months old when the Brooklyn Bridge was 100 yrs. old. Now is he a grown man.
Will Helen Thomas be at the birthday celebration?
After all, she was probably at the christening.
What I can’t understand is that 125 years ago they could build a bridge that lasts 125 years, at least. Yet bridges built 30 years ago are lucky to last 30 years.
Take a picture, rip it down and build a new one. These things aren’t intended to last forever.
Is anyone selling? If it’s that old it’s got to be some kind of valuable antique. Call mom, and ask her to take it to Antiques Roadshow! ;).
If anyone is still interested this bridge is still for sale.
From “It Happened in Brooklyn” (1947):
Sinatra sings “The Brooklyn Bridge Song” (by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn) on the Brooklyn Bridge.

This was long before Brooklyn was ruined by all the hipster/whitebread transplant trustafarians from Ohio.
