U.S. Outlook Is Worst Since '92, Poll Finds

McCain a Strong Candidate Despite Low Approval Ratings for Bush

Americans are gloomier about the direction of the country than at any point since 1992, and Democrats have matched their biggest advantage in 25 years as the party better able to deal with the nation's main problems, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Despite more than eight in 10 now saying the country is headed in the wrong direction and growing disaffection with the Republican Party, Sen. John McCain, the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, remains competitive in a general election matchup with Sen. Barack Obama, the favorite for the Democratic nomination, and runs almost even with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Those findings indicate that McCain continues to elude some of the anger aimed at his party and at President Bush, whose own approval dipped to an all-time low in Post-ABC polling. Maintaining a separate identity will be a key to McCain's chances of winning the White House in November. Overall, Democrats enjoy a 21-point advantage over Republicans as the party best-equipped to handle the nation's problems.

As the Democratic race nears the end of its primary-caucus season, with the next round of voting set for Tuesday in West Virginia, this new national poll shows Obama with a 12-point advantage over Clinton as the preferred choice for the nomination.

More than six in 10 Democrats now say Obama is the one with the better shot at winning in November, and while Clinton retains her wide advantage as the better experienced, for the first time Obama has the edge on the question of who is the "stronger leader."

Scary! The Compost poll shows the president's approval at an all-time low...I just hope that the economic and war news is better come November or we're going to have to say "President Obama"!

This despite the fact that gas prices, for example, have skyrocketed since the reign of terror that is Speaker Pelosi and Maj. "Leader" Reid began.

Gotta have a plan. I knew this would be a tough year when after 2006, the house kept Boehner and Blunt in charge instead of going with Pence and Shadegg and reform. WTF was DC thinking?

Americans Losing Confidence in Current Leadership

Yeah, protracted combat, rapidly-rising energy costs, falling home values, and quiet, shy White House will often have that effect.

“Democrats enjoy a 21-point advantage over Republicans as the party best-equipped to handle the nation’s problems.”

Either the people are idiots or the democrats have bamboozled everyone.
Since the Democrats took control of the Congress, they have managed to incite multiple tax hike proposals, stalled out the economy, hammered the stock market and send our self-image in a tailspin.

But nobody stands up for the Republicans anymore. Not even Republicans.

The “right-track wrong-track” polls are deceiving. Almost every conservative who would never ever vote for Obama or Hillary will nonetheleless tell you the country is on the “wrong track.” The Dems would be wise to take little comfort in “wrong track” numbers.

McCain couldn't be weaker candidate since is support from conservatives decreases by the day.

More tired McCain bashing .

It's hardly bashing considering the repeated socialist stances he has taken over the years right up to the present.

Well, in all candor, other than his nominations of Roberts and Alito, Bush has sucked in his second term.

Gas prices I think is what has most people bent out of shape. They shot up here another 10-11 cents per gallon today. We are now at $359.9 in most places. Higher in others. This price is Murphy which is at Wal Mart.

That cannot be correct. 9.999 out of 10 Dims do not believe in Christ.

The democrats are the majority in both the house and senate. If Americans are dissatisfied with the current direction, then they get rid of ALL current members of congress.

They’re automatically rid of the President. He’s not running.

The article loses all credibility with his opening statement.

If you say so.

Among people who identified themselves as Hillary Clinton supporters, 28 percent said they would vote for McCain if Obama is his opponent, the March 7-22 Gallup Poll Daily election tracking survey found.

Don't know who they're asking because the Dems can't even organize a primary election system, much less have they shown any evidence of their ability to handle the nation's problems.

I think he meant that the title is absurd; it would be the same as “KC Conspirator a strong freeper despite Ncalburts low approval rating” - which means that there is not even the slightest connection or correlation between the 2.

DING, DING, DING!!!!! We have a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keeping the current house leadership was dooming the GOP from the start for 2008. BTW, does anybody know who the chair of the RNC is? I've never seen him on TV. But I sure have seen alot of Mr Dean. Here-go is the second problem. The GOP PR machine sucks!

McCain is doing a pretty good job of that himself considering he refuses to go after Obama to the extent he admonished his own party when the North Carolina GOP started running an ad against Obama last month.

Wrong, sir.

McCain, and his staff, have taken the high road on this and other occasions because they rightfully know:

1) That the left wants them to get down into the gutter - down in the gutter with Wright, where the left would like to strip McCain of the distinctions of his distinctive military service including imprisonment and torture; and

2)The McCain staff wants to maintain a semblance of independence so that conservative democrats and independents will go for McCain. A hugely important factor.

There is nothing unreasonable or untoward about this. We are in a war with the left - with the defense and security of this nation in the balance.

May we never forget the 4000 persons slaughtered in the space of two hours on 9/11.

When at war, you employ strategy and tactics to defeat the enemy, whether Islamic terrorists or the malignant left in our own nation - including neutralizing the opposition by drawing away its support.

Oh, so just criticism of McCain is, in your world, enabling Obama?

Sounds like one of those self loathing, low esteem GOP sycophants that feel that they really somehow do deserve to be cheated on my McCain cuz he’ll change, someday he’ll really change.

Yeah, right!
