Bush Hits New Low as 'Wrong Track' Rises Eighty-Two Percent of Americans Say the Country's Seriously Off on the Wrong Track ANALYSIS by GARY LANGER

May 12, 2008 —

Public disgruntlement neared a record high and President Bush slipped to his career low in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Eighty-two percent of Americans now say the country's seriously off on the wrong track, up 10 points in the last year to a point from its record high in polls since 1973. And 31 percent approve of Bush's job performance overall, while 66 percent disapprove.

The country's mood -- and the president's ratings -- are suffering from the double whammy of an unpopular war and a faltering economy. Consistently for the last year, nearly two-thirds of Americans have said the war in Iraq was not worth fighting. And consumer confidence is near its lowest in weekly ABC News polls since late 1985.

Bush's approval rating has been extraordinarily stable -- before today's 31 percent it had been 32 percent or 33 percent in nine ABC/Post polls from July through last month. In presidential approval polls by Gallup since 1934, just three presidents have gone lower: Jimmy Carter, who bottomed out at 28 percent approval in July 1979; Richard Nixon, 24 percent in July and August 1974; and Harry Truman, 22 percent in February 1952.

Bush now has gone 40 months without majority approval, beating Truman's record (also during economic discontent and an unpopular war) of 38 months from 1949-52.

Wasn't it way lower than 31% in some other polls? I would think the lowest approval ever would be somewhere around 0 or less.

It’s all gas prices. As the gas price changes, Bush’s numbers change. It’s sort of weird. Rush had a graphic once that superimposed it.

Sort of leads to the conclusion that if we had 0 priced gas, his numbers would be at 100%.

The funny thing is, none of these polls ever mention Congress, who probably does more to control the price of gas. And their numbers are usually about 18%.

Dear ABC:

You’re fulla sh*t. I have my problems with Pres. Bush, but I have a much bigger problem with liberal democrat socialist bastards that have no other agenda than power, money and weakening my country. How’s Harry Reid and Pelosi doing? Thanks for rooting for the wrong side as usual.

No President can be popular when oil prices quadruple during his term in office. Add the Iraq war, the illegal alien invasion, and food inflation and it’s a wonder his score is not zero.

“Bush Hits New Low as ‘Wrong Track’ Rises [Eighty-Two Percent of Americans Say.......]”

The weird thing is that those in the media who quote the 82% figure seem to believe that all 82% believe the U.S. is on the wrong track for the same reason. I think we're on the wrong track because there are too many people who believe that the government is the source of blessing, that the government is the entity that, if given enough power, will solve all our problems, that man's economic activities are evil, unless directed by the government, and will cause everyone on earth to fry from global warming, unless saved from it by the government. We're on the wrong track because we've deviated so far from the Founders' vision for the United States and have exchanged our liberty for the false hopes of collectivism.

It's the cost of fuel and food.

Rightly or wrongly, the public perception is that it's Bush's (GOP's) fault.

Unless there's a correction before election, the presidency and the congressional majority will be captured by the Dims by a landslide......no matter if it's Hellary, Hussein or Donald Duck.

Bush has no idea how to defend himself or his party, and/or he doesn't care anymore. FDR and Reagan would be going right to the people every couple days with leadership, explanations and pep talks if they were still around.

Folks are bitter, angry, scared and ragingly emotional about the cost of living.....and they will take it out on the GOP in November. There's no doubt in my mind.

Anyone not paying attention to the current mood (regarding the daily skyrocketing of prices) of friends, relatives, neighbors, workmen and retail employees, etc. in one's orbit is blind as a moonbat.

This "on right track" question allows the MSM gurus to justify it on any basis they wish. The pukes at ABC want to blame it on war and economics. I want to blame it on Democrat perfidy and the MSM (which includes ABC).

So, who's right ~ the liars in the media, or me, a common citizen exercising my limited First Amendment rights on an internet discussion board.

These polls would be far more informative if they were to go into a bit more depth.

There is a difference between between being disappointed with the President because he was not more Conservative vs being angry with him for being too Conservative.

I may agree with the liberal that the country is going in the wrong direction but totally disagree what the right direction would be.

I think the false inference that the media tries to draw from both these poll numbers is that 3/4 of the population wants the country to adopt the policies and positions of the opposition party; i.e. the Democrats.

What will the MSM and the media have left when Bush leaves office? Bush bashing is such a mainstay for them.

When he goes back to Crawford, are they going to hold protests at the ranch until he gets a solar powered tractor?

The way everyone is acting you would think he was running again.

They’re all spouting the “I’m not Bush” mantra.

It’s ridiculous.

Pres. Bush has had a stellar record of economic stability, despite constant carping from the left and right and a major US war.

There has not been ONE quarter of negative growth under this President. Not ONE!!

Americans are either ungrateful or deluded by the Media.

I think it's the latter...the lying, commie media.

It’s all gas prices. As the gas price changes, Bush’s numbers change.

So, sometime in October, I wonder if Obama will appeal to OPEC to lower prices. And, wanting him to be our president, they comply. Instant president.

Way, way too much emphasis on polls. Analysis paralysis is not an exagerration when describing just about aything that has a political element to it. Minute Girl has it right about the degree of unrest out there. Action is needed and most people could care less which party or politician gets the credit as long as the problems area of the economy begin to stablize at the very least.

I hear this all the time. The trouble is no poll ask what direction the country is taking is the wrong direction. I say it's going in the wrong direction, most of us would. But to answer the poll that way would not match the reason given by the left.

So how many answered yes because the country is trending toward socialism and cultural decay?
