JERUSALEM, Israel (AP) -- The United States said Tuesday that reaching a Mideast peace agreement within the next eight months "might be improbable but it's not impossible," cautioning that no major breakthroughs are expected when President Bush arrives in Israel on Wednesday.
Bush will attend ceremonies in Jerusalem marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Jewish state. He also will go to Saudi Arabia where he promises to press King Abdullah to increase oil production to ease soaring costs on consumers. Bush made a similar plea in January but it was ignored.
The president's final stop will be at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh where he will meet over two days with a handful of leaders: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Jordan's King Hussein II and Iraqi leaders. Bush also is scheduled to meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora but that is in doubt now after clashes between the U.S.-backed government in Beirut and Hezbollah-led opposition.
Bush, in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, said the United States cannot impose peace in the Middle East.
"I will come not as somebody who demands, but somebody who encourages," Bush said. He said, "I'm not running for the Nobel Peace Prize; I'm just trying to be a guy to use the influence of the United States to move the process along."

Securing a peace deal is entirely possible. Securing a deal that the Arabs would actually live up to is something that will never happen.
Headline should read “Impossible, never ever going to happen even if Israel is eliminated.” The Bible has shown that Arabs can NEVER be trusted.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
While she’s at it, she should wish for Santa to appear in the sky riding a sled pulled by six purple hippos, with the Easter Bunny riding shotgun and dropping packages containing Reese’s peanut butter eggs. She should also wish to grow wings and fly to the moon.
Yeah, I have been losing respect for her little by little ever since she entered State. However, her recent proclamation that the problem with Bush's "Roadmap to Peace" was the "sequentiality" of it, was the last straw.
Yeah, right Condi. It has nothing to do with the Palestinians continuing to shoot rockets and send homicide bombers into Israel to kill the Jews. Nope, it is expecting them to stop doing that before we will talk with them, that's the problem. sigh.
The peace process is all process and no peace. Which is fine, if you’re a suit from New York or DC. You don’t live there. But its a full time job, it allows you to collect frequent flyer miles and posture at cocktails and luncheons. If you come up with an inventive phrase or subparagraph, you’ll get a good semi-annual review.
Then, someday you’ll retire and open up your thinktank funded maybe with Saudi money, or you’ll publish a book about your years working for peace.
It’s good gig. You make a career of it, and then pass it along to the younger diplo-geeks just getting out of college and into the business.
No one expects anything to change, because real change comes when you re-write the reality on the ground. Re-writing the reality on the ground is something that soldiers do. When diplomacy serves as a means rather than an end in itself, when diplomacy is stiffened by steel.
The process should always serve a purpose, it should never usurp the purpose or you get what we have, endless war, endless barbarity disguised as a peace process.
Yep, from the comments on Frontpage about Condi’s ride someone wrote that Condi’s real bosses, the Jim Baker Saudi etal. will not be happy if she can’t manage to finish up her Peace in Our Time project...
And it also says that there will always be an Israel and when it looks the bleakest and Israel is about to be overrun he will return and utterly destroy her enemies.
