BELGRADE: Serbs voted Sunday in elections that will decide whether the nation takes a step toward mainstream Europe or reverts to a hard-line stance reminiscent of Slobodan Milosevic.
The ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party clung to a slim lead heading into the parliamentary vote, closely trailed by President Boris Tadic's pro-Western coalition. Officials said early turnout was strong.
Potential kingmakers included Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's conservative bloc and Milosevic's Socialists. One or both were expected to help form a new government with an anti-Western and pro-Russia stance.
"People here can't shake the feeling that Europe isn't fair and just toward Serbia," Braca Grubacic, a prominent political analyst, said Saturday. "Serbia is not like it used to be, but the problems and the political agenda are the same as they were during the Milosevic era."
Voters were also casting ballots in Kosovo, where Serb leaders organized parallel local elections in defiance of international authorities. The United Nations branded the local elections as illegal but did not stop people from voting; NATO peacekeepers stepped up patrols as a precautionary measure.
Kostunica and the Radical Party leader, Tomislav Nikolic, capitalized on an acute sense of betrayal after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February and gained formal recognition from the United States, Canada, Japan and key European powers.
Serbs consider Kosovo the heart of their ancient homeland and Serbian Orthodox faith, and their bitterness has nudged the country toward ultranationalists promising to restore bruised national pride.

" Regarding the possibility of the Socialists' participation in the new government, he told Beta news agency that "the SPS does not have to continue to forever exist as the 'Milosevic; party.
All around central and eastern Europe political parties and their leaders have changed just as the circumstances have changed, the ambassador said.
He said that "in Serbian politics there is room for a Socialist party that fights strongly for the rights of the vulnerable category of the population the unemployed, elderly, people with small earnings but that it can be, at the same time, "modern, pro-European and dedicated to the rule of law."
And then of course our State Department idiots can't keep their mouth shut about what Serbia should do:
Well, State Dep. adores George Soros, and I cant find bigger commie bastard than he is.
Castro looks like boy scout leader comparing to Soros...
“Ten years ago we were arming and equipping the worst elements of the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan - drug traffickers, arms smugglers, anti-American terrorists Now we’re doing the same thing with the KLA, which is tied in with every known middle and far eastern drug cartel. Interpol, Europol, and nearly every European intelligence and counter-narcotics agency has files open on drug syndicates that lead right to the KLA, and right to Albanian gangs in this country.” (former DEA agent and author Michael Levine; Quoted in the New American Magazine, May 24, 1999)
“[The] United States of America and the Kosovo Liberation Army stand for the same human values and principles ... Fighting for the KLA is fighting for human rights and American values.” (Senator Joe Lieberman, quoted in the ‘Washington Post’, 28 April 1999)[Good old Joe, sidekick of that lovable RINO, Sen. John McCain]

John McCain armed Kosovo Islamic terrorists
“He did everything that we asked of him, including arming the KLA”, said Albanian lobbyist Joe DioGuardi. The Albanians collected one million dollars for the presidential campaign of this senator.
Americans of Albanian heritage collected a million dollars in one evening for the presidential campaign of Republican Senator John McCain, said the Albanian American Civic League yesterday, the lobby group headed by former Congressman Joe DioGuardi. A reception for McCain was held January 22 at the Saint Regis Hotel in Manhatten, and the senator, who is now leading in the runoff for the Republican party candidacy in the November elections, cut his campaign in Florida by one day to attend this gathering.
“Even in 1998 when we had problems with Milosevic, McCain did everything that we asked of him to the benefit of the Albanian people, including arming the KLA”, announced DioGuardi. “We are American Albanians and we need a leader who will strengthen this country... We must support John McCain because he did everything we asked of him for Kosovo, from supporting the Kosovo Liberation Army to supporting the independence of Kosovo. Two years ago he spoke in Brussels and said that independence is the only solution”, concluded this former congressman who has been fighting for the independence of Kosovo and Metohija for more than twenty years.
He explained that the first thing McCain said to him when he entered the hotel in Manhatten on January 22: “Joe, I saw your people in Michigan, and in South Carolina and in New Hampshire”, from which this lobbyist deduced that all Americans of Albanian background will be voting for the senator from Arizona....[Thanks for nothing John Dhimmi McCain]
The US policy of appeasement and granting of aid, directly or indirectly, to various radical factions in the Middle East, like Hamas, Hezbollah and Fatah elements in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank, has extended its tenacles to the Balkans, where again Christian minorities are put to the sword in the name of Allah. Yet the gutless wonders in the EU and USA diplomatic and governmental establishments do nothing but stare at their own navels and do nothing to protect innocent orthodox Christians and Jews throughout the world.
Actually, it goes beyond "not protecting innocent Christians & Jews". Those organizations deliberately throw Christians and Jews under a truck to please the Kosovo's Muslim Albanians, and then fight anyone trying to protect the victims.
An Albanian poster responded to an article I had written on Serbia recently and there was really nothing insulting said about Albanians in the article .
Yet regarding all the ancient Christian churches Serbs built in Kosovo, the Albanian poster said, "Yeah. Thanks to the Serbs for leaving us those -- we can always use more public toilets"
The amazing thing about the Kosovo Albanians is that they will successfully play "victim" for the media, but then show their real face to Serbs whenever they think that they can get away with it -- laughing, taunting, insulting, and bragging how they got the US on their side; spitting on all things Christian -- until an American shows up, and then they drag out "Mother Teresa" as "one of their own".
This isn't the behavioral pattern of a real "victim"; it is the behavioral pattern of a narcissistic abuser -- and it is flat out evil.
The Balkans are at least 100 years behind the world IMO.
Churches, mosques, historical sites, documents, houses, all destroyed in a lot cases. Let’s hope that people eventually wake up and realize that they have to live together. It’s the 21st century and this “You destroy mine, I destroy yours” or “you destroyed 500 and I only destroyed 100” stuff does not belong anywhere, and in Europe the powers have decided to end it.
Destroying 500 year churches or mosques, or expelling up a few 100,000 people on whatever side is outdated.
I don’t know what is so “illegal” about Kosovo Serbs voting in the Serbian election. Even Serbian citizens in the US voted in the election!
I know that for a fact, since I am on several Serb-oriented e-mail lists which got messages urging Serbian citizens resident in America to vote in the election. I, of course, was ineligible to vote, which means one less vote against Tadic.
The Balkans is the geo-political fault line of Europe. It is where East meets West, where Christianity meets Islam, where Roman Catholicism meets Orthodox Christianity. And it is also where all those things collide when there are shifts in power coming from outside.
The Balkans have been victims of "Drang nach Osten" three times in the last hundred year -- this time the Germans just decided to do it from behind the scenes using EU, International and local puppets to stage the play, rather than putting their brand on it -- which they were punished for twice.
This place was drinking from gold cups while you were still swinging from trees.
What would you do if someone took your son and put a bullet in his head right in front of you simply because you are an American? Would you try to understand why they did it or would you tear out his heart? You forgot about the human element not to mention that the loss of Kosovo was simply illegal and done with impunity.
So, what is in style now is raping another nation and taking a piece of her land just because you can? Is that in style now? Is that much more civilized?
NATO bombardment displaced more people than the Serbian army and they still have not returned to you glorious champions of democracy and equality.
Folks like you are dangerous because you wouldn't know an enemy until you're own blood was spilled. There is nothing new with what the "advanced" nations are doing. If you know anything about history it's all been done before. Remember, not far from the Balkans the democracy you think you have a monopoly on was born. Philosophy was being discussed while your ancestry was still working with rocks.
