School Survey Asks: Who'll Get Pregnant? Parent Wants 6th-Grade Teacher Fired
POSTED: 4:32 pm EDT May 13, 2008 UPDATED: 5:49 pm EDT May 13, 2008 JACKSON, Miss. -- The father of a sixth-grader in Jackson, Miss., said he wants a teacher fired following a survey students completed that said his daughter will likely get pregnant before graduating high school, local station WAPT reported.
Curtis Lyons said that when his daughter came home from Chastain Middle School Monday she told him what had happened.
"She was humiliated," Lyons said. "She's an honor student."
Lyons said his daughter told him that the students were given a survey in science class that asked them to select a student they thought was most likely to die, get pregnant, or contract AIDS. The names of all of the students were included on the survey and the class associated the names with the scenarios.
Once the results were tallied, Lyons said, the teacher told his daughter that the statistics showed that her classmates believed that she was one of four girls most likely to become pregnant.
"I don't think she should be teaching kids," Lyons said. "Those questions were out of place and inappropriate. I want to know what was the lesson in that?"

Survey wants to know ... “Which teacher will get fired for being a hideous freak??”
so what else is new?
While the survey was repullisive and the teacher should be fired, it is obvious that the the kids in that 6th grade class know Mr. Lyons’ daughter much better than he does.
This teacher is a moron to pass out this survey. It doesn't teach anything.
Any more this seems like S.O.P. for government schools.
Tell the truth and run....
To the contrary, it says the girl was an honor student. The class was probably picking on her. They were asked an absurd question and decided it would be funny to write in an honor student.
I think you’ve got it. Envy is the deadliest of the seven deadly sins.
Someone needs to get this to Levin - it’s a great follow up for the SKITTLES! scandal a month ago.
It was a lesson in judgment! WOW!! Amazing!
As stupid as it was, it was showing how to judge. But we’re all too PC to even consider that.
I wonder if this was the teacher’s survey, or one she found somewhere and thought it would be useful in a “Health” class. Whoever devised it was not thinking. It was a cruel thing to do.
None.......if they have tenure.
I assume this survey was taken after all of the students had achieved mastery in reading, writing, arithmetic, science, geography and history.
If the story is accurate, I agree with the father. Or, perhaps it even goes further up the chain, was this a curriculum the school signed off on?
BTW when we chose a sex ed curriculum where I taught, the parents were involved.

No, this is news because it is not common.

Point taken. But if you’ve never conceived of a promiscuous girl who pulls excellent grades, you need to expand your view of “worldly” women.
if that were the case, i doubt she would have shared this incident with her father...
i wonder whose name she wrote...
Maybe in the eighth grade or later.
But in the sixth grade the other kids were picking on her. Bet one of the other girls orchestrated the poll results.
It's what they do at that age.
Middle school is a tense place full of changes.
It would have been a teachable time IF the teacher had asked “how many of you will get pregnant before age 19, and be POOR for life, because you aren’t married?” Wonder what parents would say to a question like that?
Incredibly unfunny/stupid response. You sound as young and dumb as a sixth-grader.

I was going to make a scathing remark but...I think most of you just wouldn’t get it.
Public education, the gift that keeps on giving, even when you wish with all your heart that it would stop.
Totally inappropriate. These questions do not belong in any school setting. Sounds like a nosey teacher with her own issues.
The kids in every school already have that figured out. This girl just found out about it unlike many of the others who don't.
What this teacher did was way out of line and he should certainly be reprimanded for it. Losing his job is not out of line.
When will schools learn to stick to educating kids instead of indoctrinating them?
>>While the survey was repullisive and the teacher should be fired, it is obvious that the the kids in that 6th grade class know Mr. Lyons daughter much better than he does.<<
I don’t know, if she was really loose she would have hidden it from her parents. Or laughed it off.
There were no criteria to analyze, just a list, and what do you think? This equates to the autograph books and signing annuals, where you flatter or criticize, according to how you feel about a person.
This was a liberal exercise in touchy, feely, emotionalism--a waste of class time.
Fire the dimwit teacher if that is the best she can do.
How do you suppose the students selected as most likely to get AIDS or most likely to die felt?

I was going to return a pithy reply to your scathing remark, but I doubt you would have been able to understand it.
I think you misspelled the seventh word there...
oh, thanks, i was having trouble with the alphabet earlier. :-)
Do you have any evidence that “Honor Students” are less sexually active than students without honors?
How many times have the parents whined that their little darling wouldn't ever (fill in the blank)?
You need to get off your morally superior high horse.
And now everyone knows that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Get over yourself.
She’s probably a good kid, but in general, getting good grades does not mean one is moral or not sleeping around.
Honor Students have sex as well.
Supperior high horse in the previous post, Get Over yourself in next Post.
Lady,, remove the “Im Everyone’s MOM” Sign from your butt and take a time out. Preferably in the corner facing away from everyone.
Joviality is never allowed when theres a nosy little busy body around to throw a wrench in the works, like YOU.
So you think it is unfunny/stupid that I say that the teacher in question should be fired?
And six grade students answer stupid tests with stupid answers. It's a strong possibility the girl is still a virgin and this was just six graders being six graders.
An excellent point !
pithy....Isn’t that what BOR uses so much?
Pay no attention to the man behind the green curtain! Remember that one?
Due to your superior intelligence, you really should find a different forum. You know, one that can appreciate your obvious brilliance.
Look who’s talking.....
I am telling you look behind the darn curtain!!! lmao!
