Belgian police is protecting a 17th century pulpit in the Flemish town of Dendermonde. The pulpit in the Catholic church of Our Lady dates from 1685, two years after the battle of Vienna when the Christian armies of the Polish King John III Sobieski defeated the Turks poised to overrun Europe. The sculpted wooden pulpit, made by Mattheus van Beveren, depicts a man subdued by angels and represents the triumph of Christianity over Islam. The man is generally thought to be Mohammed. He is holding a book which is generally assumed to be the Koran.
Two years ago, on April 16, 2006, during the height of the Danish cartoon affair, this website published a photo of the pulpit to show that there is a long tradition of depicting Mohammed in European iconography. Last Friday the Turkish newspaper Yeniçag reprinted our picture on its front page with the caption “Stop this hideous insult.” Yeniçag demands that Belgium remove the pulpit. The paper writes that “We have had the crusades and now they are still trying to humiliate us. This is as bad as the Danish cartoons and Geert Wilders’s Fitna movie in the Netherlands. Even Pope Benedict does nothing to stop these humiliations.”
Since Friday, we have received threats while the authorities in Belgium, which has a large population of Turkish immigrants, fear that the pulpit and the church may be attacked. The Belgian press reported today that the police is guarding Dendermonde’s Our Lady church to prevent vandalism to church and pulpit.

Sure, I’d suggest we stop offending Muslims the day they quit offending us. Stuff like killing contractors, cutting their body parts up, burning them and hanging them off a bridge is relatively offensive to me.
Flying planes of innocent men, women and children into buildings with innocent men, women and children is fairly offensive to me as well.
Dancing in the streets, and celebrating the murder of 3,000 Americans is offensive to me; especially since these same people have a history of begging Americans to help out every time something bad happens to them. I find that offensive.
Extorting oil to us, by limiting production; but demanding that we pay BILLIONS to these same countries to give humanitarian aide, food and other supplies - things that this country could easily afford to do themselves; I find that offensive.
Enslaving women, as property to be used, murdered or tortured at will is offensive.
Practicing slavery, selling slaves and coming into my country and mandating that I accept your customs is offensive to me.
Prohibiting me from worshiping as I chose in your country; but demanding that you get to force your beliefs in my schools, in my culture and make allowances for your beliefs in my workplace is offensive.
I find very little about Islam that isn’t offensive.
Be careful. Mad Mohamedians blew up ancient Buddhist statues because they were an afront to Islam. This church is probably also a target for radical muslism.

A historic carving to mark the END of Islamic imperialism in Europe is referenced by the Turks as an affront to Islam and a perpetuation of the "Crusades" (which were waged in the Middle East).
The world is NOT the divine province of muslims. Muslims who see the world divided up into 2 classes of people "muslim" and subhuman "kufir". And an imperialist notion that once a land is conquored by Islam it should be under Islam forever (and they justify reconquering such land).
Land has no faith. There may be religious history (events, places, people) to a bit of land, but according to our Constitution, we are born with unalienable rights. Not just in this country (even if it is the only country that recognizes all of them).
But the Koran sees the world as territory. Muslim lands are an Islamic concept. Kufir seized in jihad must be taken back to muslim lands before they are divided up as slaves.
Christianity knows no boders. All muslims bow 5 times a day every day to the capital of the Islamic empire. A city that has a death penalty for any non-muslim who dares enter.
This is great, and among the reasons Flemish Belgians are some of the best people around. Conservative, pro-American, French-Belgian-hating, Muslim-slammin’ capitalistic good guys all. And Bruges is a gorgeous place.
We should put these in our National Archives for safe-keeping. These pieces of art are of critical importance to the entire West, and a symbol of the last great defeat of Islam which saved our way of life, and a reminder that we have to defeat Islam yet again in the present century.
That’s really excellent. For a Muslim, the sole of the foot is the dirtiest part of the body, and there is no greater insult than to step on someone else or hit him with your shoe.
