RICHMOND-The State Corporation Commission has scheduled a public hearing for June 24 to receive comments on a request by Dominion Virginia Power to increase the companys fuel rate on July 1.
Dominion says the increase is necessary to cover the higher costs of fuel used to generate electricity.
The company is seeking to raise its current fuel factor from 2.232 cents per kilowatt-hour to 3.893 cents. An average residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours in a month would see an increase of $16.61 on a monthly bill, or 18.3 percent.
A public hearing on the request is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, in the commissions second-floor courtroom located in the Tyler Building, 1300 E. Main St., in downtown Richmond. Any person wishing to comment at the hearing should arrive early and notify the SCC bailiff.
The SCC intends to webcast the audio portion of the hearing via the Internet. Instructions can be found on the SCC Web site at http://www.scc.virginia.gov/case.

Am I the only one who can kind of understand why they have to do this? Most of their power is from coal or oil. It requires oil to transport the coal. We should really be complaining to the gang of idiots in Washington who have put up endless roadblocks to this country’s continued prosperity.
It is not up to our government to provide resources. It is their job to stay out of our way when we want access to them. They are obstructing us in our efforts to:
Drill ANWR
Drill the Continental Shelf
Drill Montana
Drill Wyoming
Build new refineries
Build new nuclear
Conduct R&D at the corporate level
I want nothing from Congress except for them to, as John Galt said, “Get the hell out of my way.”
That’s child’s play compared to the 75% increase in rates by Baltimore Gas & Electric last year, with another 15-20% increase slated for this year. Average people are paying $600 per month for electricity in BGE’s service area.
Cripes, our base rate is over 12 cents per kilowatt hour here in the People’s Republik of Californication!
I’m aware of the situation in Maryland. I would imagine the energy costs would make a lot of people/businesses think twice about living, buying or investing in the state.
MD has great “leadership”./s

I'll probably be voting for John Galt this time around.

I have stock in Penneylvania Power & Light. I love deregulation.
My husband and I are on the time of day metering system—we pay less for electricity used during off-times and more for use during peak hours. Our water heater is on timer, our thermostats are all programmed to use “cheap electricity,” and we do all of our electricity-intensive chores (clothes washing/drying, dishwasher, etc.) on the weekend to coincide with the cheaper rates. Our house is all electric but even with that, our bill used to be about $200 at the peak of the winter heating and summer cooling season. During spring and fall, the bills were under $100 for a 5-bedroom house. Last winter, however, our bill was nearly $400 and hasn’t been below $170 yet. Other people in our neighborhood are seeing bills upwards of $800/month. I can’t wait to retire and move out of the Peoples’ Republic of Maryland. Get me to a red state!
Democrats had had a freeze on rate increases for many years until it became untenable, and even they realized rates had to increae. BG&E is just catching up with increased fuel and labor costs.
Note that if $16.61 is an 18% increase in total payment, that means the old and new monthly payments are $75.98 and $92.28.
For 1000 kwh, that means the total new price will be about 9.3 cents per kilowatt-hour. I hate to pay more, but given the huge rise in energy costs, I feel lucky.
We use a bit less than 1000 kwh, except for July and August (AC), and December (Christmas Lights).
How can it be under the radar, if we all know about it?
