Senate race tightening; McCain leads both Dems (NC)
Public Policy Polling ^ | May 12, 2008

Posted on 05/14/2008 8:25:38 AM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Kay Hagan has pulled within 5 points of Elizabeth Dole, according to the newest survey by Public Policy Polling. She had trailed by 17 points in PPP's most recent look at the race, taken in February.

Dole leads Hagan 48-43. The two candidates are closely matched in every part of the state, except the Mountains and the southeastern area of the state, where Dole has a strong advantage.

Seems awfully ambitious for McCain to run for the NC senate seat too. I thought his time would be taken up in other endeavors.

Very amusing.

This is a badly worded headline from the polling firm.

I just read on another thread that Sen. Cornyn might be in a close race in Texas. My own Senator Sununu is currently polling about 10 points behind Jeanne Shaheen. This November just might bring a GOP bloodbath, AND a President Obama.

The most telling part is that the GOP still has over 5 months to take action, but instead they are running away with their tails tucked. So long as the oil barons and the mega-banks are serviced by the GOP, the conservatives can take a hike.

The Rockefeller wing of the GOP retook control after the 2004 election and has totally destroyed the GOP by catering to the whims of bog business (big oil, pro-illegal alien)

Too bad

Kay Hagan has pulled within five points of Elizabeth Dole

Dole voted with the Dems yesterday to block drilling for oil in ANWR.

All those eastern liberals moving south to NC, SC, GA, Fla,and those out in Idaho and Utah will eventually turn those states Blue. Liberals will destroy those conservative states in a few years. All those CA liberals are moving to NV, ID, and Utah. The conservatives don’t stand a chance. We are slowly being out numbered.

Yeah, I think the GOP is pretty much in for a severe ass whooping this November.

When you have a Democrat running against a Democrat, the Dem wins every time. Liddy Dole is a real disappointment.

If the GOP does get annihilated in the fall, what will they do then? Who’s going to stand up and provide some conservative leadership? As far as I can see, the answer is NO ONE.

Once again, the GOP has "misunderestimated" how disgusted the American public is with the self-serving, unprincipled, principle compromisers who lead the Republican party. We're not fooled by the label "conservative" on moderates who are to the left on some issues of the conservative Dems they're running against. Without a clear distinction in political doctrines, the public will punish the party that promised change but ultimately betrayed our trust and brought us more of the same leftward slide, while pursuing a desultory war strategy. See, 2006.

McCain will lose too.

Why would anyone expect anything else--given the fact that the GOP nominee actually considered switching parties to the democrats!!!

This always seems to happen when Republicans try to become one with democrats. The party has destroyed itself.

Even when we had Congress and the White House, we had limp wristed weak sisters in office that were all to content with embracing liberal policies. They never stood up to fight democrats non stop lies and slander.

I guess there is no need for them when voters can just vote for a D with a D by his or her name.

McCain may be ahead in NC now, but the Dems have yet to settle. All downhill once they do. Once again the GOP blows it by pushing a candidate that offends so many Republicans. He is going to drag all the candidates down in the lower races. Sometimes I think that is what he wants.

Sad story, but no surprise here.

Wasn’t there another poll the other day showing Dole ahead by only 1? So this seems like an improvement for her. I suspect she will win by a small margin, unless there is a huge Demo tidal wave, in which case Collins, Smith, Cornyn, and Coleman also are swept out. If that happens Republicans will be lucky to hold on to 40 seats. It will be like 1974 again.

Things are becoming very alarming.

If so, there's no reason for it. The issues are winning issues this year. Democrats are responsible for these sky-high fuel prices and they're doing everything they can to see they continue.

It is Democrats who are putting our country's security at stake. They actually take the side of our enemies.

Democrats will destroy the economy with huge tax increases and increased spending.

Democrats are promoting all the illegal immigration they can get.

Remind me again why voters hate Republicans?

Obama was favored in the Dem primary, not the general, although he is competitive, even though by all rights he shouldn’t be. President Bush won NC in 2000 56-43 and in 2004 52-44.

Rasmussen, who, IMO is a better pollster than these people, has McCain up by only three, and Dole down by one. Not good news in a state that should be a slam dunk for the Pubbies.

Why? His friend and colleague, Joe Lie_berman ran for the senate and VP jobs simultaneously. That's the way democRats operate.

Yes, but it was from a different polling firm. You really can't compare polls from different firms -- their methodology is always going to be different. Regardless of whether Dole is up 1 or 5, it's a close race right now.

And we should be glad Lieberman won the Senate race too, because the Pubbie he beat in Connecticut in 2000 is now in prison for life on child rape charges.

Sorry to say but Rasmussen has Hagan at 48 and Dole at 47. McCain has a small lead over Obama. I have little doubt McCain will win this state. Dole is harder to say.

Those numbers seem like an outlier. Hagan may get to 45 in the general, but unless Dole flubs really badly, she won’t lose. Neither party wins by wide margins in Senate races, anyhow. Then again, if we reach the point where Dole is in trouble, we may be reaching a double-digit loss in Senate races. A collapse unseen since 1958. It took 22 years to recover from those losses.

If Osama Obama gets a huge black voter turnout then it’s conceivable that Dole could go down. This could be the perfect storm year for Republicans, with the luckiest-person-on-the-planet Obama being the main beneficiary.

I think that Kay Hagan is benefitting, in part, from her gender. U.S. Senate races between women are still a rarity and it’s getting Hagan some free press. Also, Hagan represents a legislative district that often votes Republican, so she knows how to tell voters what they want to hear.
