The Sad State of American Politics

There was a time when Democrats were seen primarily as populists, declaring their allegiance to the “common man” and to the “general welfare,” but those days are long past. Now, in the early days of the 21st century, the Democratic Party has become little more than a noisy propaganda machine, open and available to any and all special interests that come to the table with enough cash and/or “reliable” votes to make it worth their while.

They’ve captured the construction trades, public school teachers, public employees, minorities, illegal aliens, radical environmentalists, radical feminists, trial lawyers, gays, lesbians, a sizable chunk of the subsidy-addicted agricultural community, and, of course, the surrender monkeys of the peace-at-any-price movement...all special interests wanting something from an increasingly-intrusive government bureaucracy.

Name any issue...energy, education, national defense, the economy...and it can be shown, conclusively, that Democrats are on the wrong side of the issue, invariably siding with special interests against the general welfare.

Well, Hillary is bringing back the appeal to the common people. She goes in bars and has a shot and a beer. And did you know that Grandpa Rodham taught her to shoot a gun? And she grew up in a middle class family in the middle of America, believing in the promise of America and the American dream. That dream has been shattered these past 7+ years.

(Why is it that the dark times correspond to presidents terms of office of the opposite party?)

And you don’t see Hillary wearing designer clothes or hairstyles. No sir, she has helmet hair, and wears pantsuits from off the rack at Wal-Mart.

You might be right. There's a possibility of new party alignment starting this year, where the Republican moves fast to the middle at the expense of conservatives, while the Dims move fast to the left. There might be a new conservative party, but --at least during the transision-- it will be small. The key, I think, is a strong grass-root organization, built from below-up, not top-down such as by immediately trying to capture the presidency by running some famous persons.

The author was much too easy on the GOP. The GOP's problems are much deeper.

The GOP has only become populist in the hope that populism will win votes so that the GOP can push a big business agenda that may very well be worse for America than the Democrats' socialist agenda.

Dubya's and McCain's shameless support for shamnesty clearly demonstrated that one of the GOP's main goals is to provide what amounts to slave labor for its big business special interests. The GOP has total disregard for middle-America.

Well, it's nice to see that middle-America is catching on.
