Contract Canceled for High School Teacher Who Called Student's Muslim Father a Terrorist

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

AP

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — A high school teacher accused of calling the Muslim father of one of his students a terrorist will not be back next school year.

The Michigan City Area Schools Board voted unanimously Tuesday to cancel the contract of John Scheimann, who has taught in the district for 19 years. The action was included in several personnel recommendations by Superintendent Michael Harding. There was no discussion.

Scheimann could not be reached for comment Wednesday by The Associated Press because there was no telephone listing for him. He told The News-Dispatch last week that Hussein M. Mroueh's daughter had "twisted my words."

"School policy, as it is, is to take the kid's word," Scheimann told the paper.

Mroueh filed a lawsuit in LaPorte Circuit Court on April 2 against Scheimann and the school district. It alleges that the Michigan City High School social studies teacher said in a class that included Mroueh's daughter that Mroueh was on a terrorist watch list. It also alleges that the teacher told Mroueh's daughter that he worked for the Department of Homeland Security.

Wonder if the kids know the power they have to fire any teacher they disagree with or dislike...

We just CANNOT have people accusing muslims of being terrorists!

If indeed he did that and used that terminology, he deserves some type of discipline. However, firing the guy based on the word of the student only?? Where is the due process here?

I’d sue their butts back to the 15th century!

Sounds like that teacher has issues. If you were working for Homeland Security, what’s the point of outing this guy in class, especially in front of his daughter?

It seems like that type of information would be classified. Why would you want to alert a guy that you were on to him? It would on prevent him from leading you to his contacts.

Those bullets into the homes of the accused terrorist and the principle are interesting. I hope the security at that school is up to code, so to speak.

Only if what the student claims really happened. I have some doubts about that.

There seems to be more to this story than meets the eye. It claims the teacher has had numerous suspensions and warnings, and that he is not currently teaching because of a suspension.

However, it also says the Muslim guy is suing the school district for mucho moolah. Gee, I wish someone with money would call me something nasty. I could use a few million.

FRee speech

Yes, the teacher exercised his free speech rights in class. Likewise, the school district exercised their right to free speech when they told the teacher: "you're fired".

It would seem that other students would be questioned. It should be rather easy to confirm or stike down, if the administration checked out the story.

If they didn’t, it would seem the teacher would have grounds to go after them.

I knew this would eventually find its way to FR. I work in the same system as this teacher did, and I knew this particular teacher relatively well. Yes, there is information that is pertinent to this article that is not present, for whatever reason.

The only question here is why is the school board taking the word of a terrorist's child over that of the teacher?

I'd say if anyone has issues they do.

The documents also contain copies of Scheimann's personnel file
that showed several warnings and suspensions. He is not teaching at
this time because of a suspension.

He keeps the job for NINETEEN YEARS, despite warnings and suspensions.

But I give the school credit for common sense.
When one of your teachers offends a guy who's co-congregants
saw heads off infidels simply as religional devotion...
well it's time to send that problem teacher packing!

Definitely free speech to take the word of a student over a teacher. Yep.

My question is, was the kid’s father a terrorist or not?

Typically there are folks who make it to their early or mid-40s and show up with bi-polar disorder.

Their lives, already difficult, are made into living hells by their coworkers and friends.

I've seen that happen numerous times.

The excuse is invariably "he deserved it, did you hear what he said"?

Be interesting to see what all the other noise was about ~

Dunno. What if he wasn't? What if he just happened to be a muzzie? Should the teacher be allowed to call him a terrorist if he's just as muzzie? My point: under the constitution, he should be allowed. However, if he is a loose cannon, the school should also have the free speech to tell him to get his $hit and get out.

We still do not know the whole story. But saying "free speech" IMO is lame. The Dixie Chicks had free speech to slander their own country during war time. County music fans and country music stations had the same free speech rights when they said "don't play the Chicks' misic anymore".

You may not know the whole story, but I do. Like I said before, there are convenient pieces of information missing from the article that illuminate this situation a whole lot more comprehensively than is led on. Mr. Schiemann was let go because this was the "straw that broke the camel's back", so to speak. Mr. Schiemann had had several disciplinary problems throughout the past two years and was at the end of his rope...

"My teacher said he was gonna flunk me. Then he said he was gonna bring a gun to class and kill us all. That's what he said!"

I had a high school history teacher who was a Viet Nam Vet and a virtual ringer for Sam Kinnison's character in Rodny Dangerfield's, "Back To School." He was also our wrestling coach and I managed to stay on his good side. I never heard him make that exact threat, but some that were pretty close. I really admired that man, and had him write a letter of recommendation for my ROTC scholarship application, and even after going away to college and then the Army, I'd still look him up for a visit whenever I got back home.

And the Chicks still have freedom of speech, don’t they?

I find it amazing that you’re defending a school district for firing this guy for making his comments, and I don’t see them firing people calling Bush a murderer, or running down the US government, or even running down Conservatives.

Give me a break. Freedom of speech does go both ways.

Let’s see them start firing anti-Conservative, pro-Socialists jackasses teaching our kids in school too, just to be fair.

I am not defending the school. I was just saying that "free speech" does not protect one from being fired. Certainly, he had the right of free speech, which he exercised, and he was not imprisoned for saying it. However, an employer can fire an employee for inappropriate speech. The freedom of speech guaranteed in the bill of rights does not insulate one from being fired. I mentioned the Dixie Chicks, because their defenders claimed they were being deprived of their "free speech rights". They were not. They had the freedom to say what they did, but there were consequences.

I do not defend the public screwel system, which wants to indoctrinate kids with their commie/leftist BS. But I would make a distinction between referring to Bush as a murderer and saying something about the parent of one of the students. If (and it is a big 'if') the teacher singled out the student's parent as a terrorist just because he's a member of the religion of peace, then he crossed a line he should not have crossed, and "freedom of speech" does not cut it. It would be like telling a student whose dad is in the military that their parent is a murderer.

As i sit here and read all of the comments it saddens me.I know this family personally and i am a Christian not a Muslim. What the article fails to mention is that this didn’t happen this year it happened last year and they have investigated this for months and it also doesn’t tell you that the day he filed this suit his house was shot at twice and his windows in his Vehicle were shot out, so who is the terrorist oh shall i mention a school official also had his home shot at the same night hmmmm.. This is a family that happens to be Muslim and no they are not from IRAQ, they have lived in the area for many many years and get along very well with the neighborhood, they also run a store and i have seen many times this man give free gas and free food to people who cant afford it but really need it. Just because he is Muslim doesn’t make him a terrorist. The thought process is just well stupid..They call that Racial profiling if you didn’t know. The girl in question is a very sweet girl and i remember the day she came home heart broken and crying because of what had happened. If that was YOUR CHILD and someone said hateful things to them in front of the whole class would you or wouldn’t you file a grievance with the school board i know i would and that is what the father did. He didn’t go in and ask for the man to be fired he filed a complaint and what the school board does with it is their problem. I know very well that this is a free speech agenda, But before you open your mouth and call all Muslims terrorist THINK, Just because we live in America doesn’t mean we all agree with how our wonderful government handles things unfortunately this is another clear cut example of profiling.
