GOP Loses Congressional Election, Faces Bloodbath in Nov.

On Tuesday night, Republicans lost a Republican congressional district in a special election in Mississippi.

Party insiders fear the loss may be just another sign of a coming bloodbath for congressional Republicans this November.

Democrat Travis Childers’ victory over Republican Greg Davis in Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District yesterday dealt the GOP its third straight loss of a solid Republican district to insurgent Democrats in this year’s special elections.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Childers held a 54 percent to 46 percent lead over Southaven Mayor Davis.

The seat was vacated by Republican Roger Wicker when he was appointed to fill the Senate seat that Republican Trent Lott vacated when he retired.

Wicker had held the seat since 1994, never winning re-election with less than 63 percent of the vote, the Washington Post reported.

You would think "conservatives" would take any opportunity they'd get to vote for a conservative GOP candidate, since that's supposedly what they want and all.

Any "conservative" who genuinely believes that there can be "conservative Democrats" after seeing that this Democrat-controlled Congress has delivered in the past year and half has got to be insane.

The GOP has gone the way of the Whigs. We have a one party system at this time.

Time to throw this baby out with the bathwater and start all over. The RINOs have destroyed the GOP reason for being.

They brought this on themselves by listening to Karl Rove and his “center right” philosophy.

If they don’t get back over to the right of right they can expect more of the same.

I’m not sure what to think.

In the first two special elections (Hastert’s seat and Baker’s seat), the GOP nominated candidates with flaws, namely Jim Oberweis and Woody Jenkins.

The Dem candidate in Louisiana (Cazayoux) ran as a conservative Dem and tried to keep the national Dems away. It appears as though Childers (in Mississippi) did so too.

I’m still unsure as to whether the GOP is looking a 1974-style buttkicking or whether these losses were aberations (sp?).

But it certainly isn’t encouraging that the GOP couldn’t have held at least one of these seats.

You can't even call it the GOP anymore. It's not 'grand' it is big time 'sorry'.
And this is one sorry position to be in. The Dems will take everything and we will be at their liberal socialistic mercy.
Lord have mercy on us... we will need it.

Keep this in mind:

* No incumbent.
* Dem candidate Childers is pro-life, pro-gun.
* He had to disassociate himself from Obama.

Not exactly Barney Frank.

I seem to recall after 2004 elections, that it was the RATs that were done, put a fork in them. One thing we should NEVER do is misunderestimate these creatures penchant for self-preservation.

I agree that we should start over and with rock-solid Conservatives. Even if it means that we are sentenced to four years of an Obama/Clinton presidency, we will just have to gut it out and make sure that there is still an America left to fight for.

I already got my bumper sticker for the next four years picked ot:”NOT MY PRESIDENT”. I know it’ not original, but it works.

I do believe people are about to find out what misery is.

They will look for a cure for the pain. Question is "will we be ready"?

Any way we look at the 2008 election, it is going to get ugly with only one party left.

We have really become the architects of our own fate and we shouldn't look to political parties to think in our best interests.

Yep the GOP was wounded in the 89 swearing in of Liberal Poppy but the party itself died in 1995 after abandoning principles for personal political gains. Lott and others began a wholesale sellout of the GOP platform and any hint of conservatism. The sooner the GOP is gone the sooner a replacement is established. The current Democratic and Republican parties are so close in agenda they are destroying the nation. There is no longer a loud and clear voice of dissent in the peoples house.

I would like to see someone like congressman John J Duncan as Speaker of the House. One of the few remaining Republicans with common sense left.

Anyone yelling for Newt can forget it also. He walked away when his nation needed him most. Why didn't he stand and fight the Rockefellers head on rather than giving them the keys to the house and party?

Excellent post. That pretty well describes my opinion. The problem is not the voters, it is the self obsessed so called “servants of the people.”

Just take a look at Lott. Screwed over the voters and then bailed after helping to ruin the GOP.

These people need to be limited to fewer terms, once they are done, they need to get a real job, like most other Americans, and no longer be eligible for taxpayer health coverage and lifetime benefits.

They all disgust me. I am ready to start over.

The Democratic Party will not fall but the GOP in fact is headed that way. As much as we all do not like the DEM Party they are what they say they are which is LIBERALS. The Not Anymore Grand Old Party sold itself to the voters as Conservatives and has been anything but that since Reagan left office. It's been one bungling Senate Majority Leader or Minority Leader now after another. When given a Conservative mandate by the voters they ignored it within six months of being sworn into office and became the Other Democratic Party or Liberal Lite. The only breath of fresh air the house had was Henry Hyde whom the RINO’s offered up as a scapegoat to the DEMs after the bogus Senate Trial.

It’s funny, of the 3 House race specials we’ve lost, only 1 of them (Oberweis in IL) was a RINO, and he lost because of that. Jenkins in LA was a Conservative, but he was undermined by RINO establishment elites (and an Indy RINO candidate — as it was, the Dem won by less than 50% of the vote). And, with Davis, he lost because he lived in the wrong place. All 3 had different reasons for our failure to win.

I endorsed McCullough because I believed he could neutralize rural opposition to Davis that would go to Childers (or Sen. Steve Holland, had he won the Dem nod) and could simultaneously hold suburban Memphis, of whom most would rather play Russian Roulette than vote Democrat.

The best thing that can happen to the Republican party is a major defeat in Nov. From Pres. Bush to Congress, to this RINO McPain, this party has been one disappointment after another. I totally agree, throw them all out starting with that pr*ck, Amnesty Graham from S.C. None of the current group of senators or congressmen deserve a vote of confidence.
The Republican party is going the way of the Dodo bird. Time for a true conservative party to come out of the ashes what once was the Republican party.

And the best way it has of channeling this anger is to commit suicide ?

I think this is all a bunch of hooey. Looked at with a sense of perspective the state of the nation is excellent, people are comfortable, and mostly prosperous, the country is powerful, poverty is low, the general level of public morals is high (its certainly improved since the 1970’s), many critical issues are going our way, like guns and abortion (where the democrats have had to lay off the one, and the other is in decline), even the divorce rates are down.

This is all mostly a morale problem. Don’t let morale problems create real ones.

There's a word for political parties which -- when increasingly confronted by anger and rejection on the part of the electorate -- routinely blame said voters for "not getting it," rather than re-examiming their own product for warts and flaws.

That word is "losers."
