Food Rights: The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund Challenges USDA and MDA on NAIS
The Complete Patient ^ | May 15, 2008 | David E. Gumpert

I may have neglected NAIS in recent months, but the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund hasn’t. Shortly after I received the reminder, the FTCLDF made its first foray beyond raw milk cases, announcing its intention to file a major suit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Agriculture over enforcement of NAIS in Michigan.

USDA and MDA have cooperated over the last few years to make Michigan in effect a prototype for the full NAIS program of premises and animal regisration. I wrote extensively about the MDA’s grueling effort to implement NAIS in Michigan via its campaign to force cattle farmer Greg Niewendorp to place RFID tags on his animals—ostensibly to control bovine tuberculosis.

I don’t have any issues with this.

RFID tags are not a problem and should be mandatory.

There is more to this issue than just putting “tags” onto cows ...

First of all, NAIS applies to every animal- dogs-cats-chickens-llamas- horses-cows-peacocks-you name it.
There are additional requirements that I as the owner of horses MUST carry with me whenever I have the horses off MY property, a scanner that I must purchase, which I then must use to prove that the horses I am transporting are mine. This means that any LEO can stop me at any time to make me prove ownership, and the cost of this scanner can be any amount the ONE manufacturer can charge me. I already have brand inspection paperwork in this state. I don’t need NAIS.
The requirements for notification(-by computer- with software I must purchase-) to the FEDERAL government every time I take my horses off the property are burdensome. I must notify them of where I am going, my route, why I am going, and when I expect to return. This is a separate report for every horse I am transporting or RIDING off my property. I then have to file a separate report for each horse upon my return. If I fail to file these reports within 24 hours, I am subject to a fine of $5000 for each report.
I am not a criminal. I do not have to wear an ankle bracelet. Why do I have to tell the Federal government where and when and why I ride my horses off my property?
I moved to an area where trails were plentiful and I could not spend $4/gallon for gas to trailer to areas where I could ride. Now that I am not spending the money to trailer them, I am supposed to be required to file reports when riding them off my property?
This is Big Brother to an extreme. It is not necessary, and who believes it isn’t a prequel to putting chips into humans?
I will not chip my horses. There is already a problem with neck nerve damage with the horses of people who volunteered for this. Some horses have been permanently damaged. What did they do to deserve that?
The chips ARE GPS, also. The government is denying that, but the big story they are giving horse owners is that with the chips, they can track your horses if they are stolen. That clearly says GPS.
There have been VIN numbers in cars for a great number of years, and they don’t find your stolen car.
The Feds cannot find the illegal intruders coming across the border each and every day, and they think they have the time to track the movement of every animal in the USA?
What’s wrong with this picture?

Wow -- that's amazing about the horses. Absolutely reprehensible. We are serfs, aren't we?

I've been reading Joel Salatin's Everything I Want to Do is Illegal. As well as Pollan's, The Omnivore's Dilemma. Whew! One does not need to be a granola-type to see that Houston, we have a problem. I wouldn't mind joining with the non-Progressive Liberals against the tyrannical country-clubbers in the Republican party and the Progressive Commies. Freedom is outdated, eh? Welcome to life as a serf.

These are not intermucular chips. I have not heard of nerve damage? Is this due to incorrect application into the muscle?

Can you provide a link to such reports?

thanks,

zek

You don’t know anything about raising food, do you. Nor about what’s in the NAIS. And it shows.

Inform me. You are the one equating these dog chips with the mark of the beast. I don’t take your statement at face value. Does that make me ignorant and uninformed?

Go ahead, make your case and enlighten me. Tell me about NAIS.

Why should I bother to inform one who does not wish to inform themselves? Instead you wish to engage in sophomoric arguments. Use your keyboard to inform yourself before you make your opinions.
