FORT MILL, S.C. -- It's an educational campaign of sorts. The target audience is Charlotte criminals.
The York County Sheriff's office wants potential bank robbers, murderers and rapists to know that York County's jail and legal system is not understaffed like the Mecklenburg County system.
There's a new billboard flashing on Interstate 77 at the Carowinds exit that says, "Don't cross the line. Some criminals think York County is a nice place to visit, but they wouldn't want to live here."
The sign then shows mug shots of Charlotte-area criminals who committed crimes and got caught in South Carolina.
The sign is strategically placed at the North Carolina-South Carolina line because York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant calls that stretch of I-77 one of the busiest crime corridors in York County.
"They think this freeway sitting here is their freeway back to freedom," says Bryant.
But not anymore thanks to a new law on the books.
Bryant explains, "We want the criminals of North Carolina, especially the Charlotte and Gaston County areas to understand, these guys will chase you back into North Carolina. There's no boundary for us anymore."
And York County Solicitor Kevin Brackett reminds criminals that getting caught for a South Carolina crime can mean a higher bond, stiffer penalties and longer sentences.
"This isn't Mecklenburg County," says Brackett. "In South Carolina, York County in particular we have the resources, the funding and the will to punish violent criminals severely."
That's the message of the "Don't Cross the Line" billboard campaign. It features mug shots of criminals like Johnell Porter.
"Mr. Porter started robbing banks in the 1970s," says Brackett. "He had multiple bank robbery convictions from North Carolina."
Then in December 2006, Brackett says, Porter robbed a Lake Wylie bank and by July 2007, Porter was sentenced to life.
Brackett says, "He was taken into custody, and he was never released, and will not be released until he's dead."
The owners of Plaza Fiesta are donating the use of their sign and the sheriff's department will be changing the criminals on there periodically. Also residents of York County can make suggestions of what the message should say.
We also have the jail space. North Carolina's revolving door justice system has crime spilling over into South Carolina. There is hope that by advertising that South Carolina doesn't treat criminals in the same way, that it will persuade these criminals to keep their activity north of the line.
How long before Al Sharkton complains of racism?
Well, no one can say that NC’s Gov Mike Sleazily isn’t trying to export products of NC to SC....lol!
At the other end of NC, just south of the Hampton Roads, VA area, there is a new bypass around Elizabeth City, NC for US 17. At the north end, near where it joins the “business” 17 is a group of concrete buildings surrounded by two chain link fences with cyclone wire on top. State prison. Right in plain view (across the farm fields) from the main artery south from VA.
Maybe they need to erect a billboard.
I listen to WBT out of Charlotte so I know full well how the city coddles criminals-especially illegal alien criminals.
I feel sorry for the city—another conservative region taken over by liberals who left the regions they ruined so much they could no longer live there—and now proceed to ruin their new regions.
Transient leftists scorching the earth as they flee their mistakes while eternally making the same mistakes wherever they go is THE curse of the New South.
If these Tar Heel crooks come to Newberry County SC,our Sheriff Lee will lock ‘em up quiker’n collards through a colon.
Good for SC!!!
Such anti-criminal advertising next to an interstate highway where everyone can see it is bound to harm the self-esteem of the criminals.
Just WHERE is the ACLU when you need them?
If you intend to commit a crime in Virginia -
we have a room reserved for you.
I like it!
[insert prison name here]
Thank goodness the sands of that hourglass have almost trickled through.
I saw something on the news yesterday (Norfolk) about how VA is having to review the method of lethal injuction since it is not humane enough.
This came from a case where the convicted beat another man to death.
I think a murderer should die in the same manner as his victim, if possible.
Bev Perdue is no great shakes either, think of her as Easily “lite”, all of the corruption, just in a nicer package.
Hmm, if a NC politician who is about to be indicted flees to SC, will that Sherrif lock them up as well? If not look out SC..their coming...!!!
SCOTUS said lethal injection was legal.
I think they should inject lethal doses of insulin—slowly.
That way the monsters would suffer panic attacks and violent convulsions before they die.
THATS justice.
Columbia isn't that tough on them from what I have been able to pick up on from the local talk circuit and a few cops.
A lot of times I am just too busy or tired to catch the streaming stuff. I should more often since the local talent here in Columbia is a bit on the lightweight side. A Jason Lewis type here would be a nice change. I do like Jeff Katz a lot though, it took a while for me to adjust.
I don't know why, but they seem to have an affinity for tourist towns, state capitols and large cities. Columbia and Charleston are full of 'em, but the rest of the state seems to be doing OK.
Here in York county we get a few liberals, but the large majority are conservatives fleeing Charlotte.
I am going to add that line to my "favorite quotes" on Facebook.
Tera Servatius (aka Citizen Servatius) is great too, but she seldom covers any issues outside of Charlotte/Mecklinburg.
I also miss Spires and Krantz.
What little I have ever caught of Tera, I like. We even named our newest German Shepherd Terra. Maybe there was a subtle influence.
Not long ago a city councilman or county councilman (can't remember) caused quite a stir when he told Charlotteans that if they didn't like it move to the surrounding counties. Well it seems they took him at his word. In South Carolina the Lake Wylie, Fort Mill and Indianland areas are exploding. Most are Charlotte refugees.
LOL. I hear you. She was a good strategist though. Can’t believe Moore wasn’t smart enough to figure it out & knock it off. Don’t know enough about McCrory yet. But if he starts the negative stuff he will probably be toast.
I know it may sound crazy to some people but I think Hagan has a decent shot at ousting Dole.
It is such a down year for Republicans that Hagan could win, how in the world any decent Democrat can vote to return our Gangster State Govt to power is beyond me.
Jim Black is now in a federal prison, he was re-elected in the Charlotte area even after he was indicted, he won by 6 votes..
He is a RINO. The light rail in Charlotte is named the McCrory line after it's biggest backer.
Great. What a horrible election year.
SC ping
I called Jeff Katz one time and told him he and Tara Servatius were the king and queen of Carolina talkradio.
Now Tara, there’s a true conservative lady with a big brain and a sexy voice.I think she is on maternity leave right now.
Next to Rush, she’s my fav.I think if she subbed for him one time she would become a big star.
Hear that,el Rushbo?
Thanks for the compliment.
Conservative prose is the best and most ignored because it is rooted in pragmatism and not pie-in-the-sky liberalism.
I don’t know if you are aware of this, but YORKshire is probably the most courageously conservative county in all of Great Britain.
Coincidence?
That’s what I like about South Carolianians - they have guts and back it up with action.
Good for you-all.
How do you properly type “you-all” in southern?
Yeah, and somebody draft a bill about those drivers’ licenses that NC gives to illegal aliens.
It's y'all. One of the few times that two words become one in Southern.
Ya'll didn't seem to think that about, oh, say 150 years ago...........
LOL
Yankees probably don’t understand how the descendents of the “Lost Cause” got their revenge by spreading their form of patriotic conservatism throughout America.
Perhaps “revenge” is the wrong word since both the North and the South-then the West, have benifited much in the process.
But I wouldn’t want to mess with them Sarge Dave Michigan boys—unlike most Blue-Bellies,they was some fighten’ fools during the Waw.
Well..I’m thinking more along the line of around 1780, when the South Carolina militia, under the leadership of Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox) took to the swamps and challenged the Redcoats.
These South Carolinians caused enough havoc to force Cornwallis to split his forces, giving Gen. Washington a bit of breathing room to regroup and eventually defeat the British at Yorktown.
Without the South Carolina citizen/soldier way back then, we might be singing “God Save the Queen” today and counting our cash in pence and quid.
We still sing Dixie and most of us have a stash of Confederate money.........just in case...............
I've lived up near Detroit and Kalamazoo for bout 4 years and played hockey with them boys.
They're alright..........
What about cannonballs?
A wagon load of them stashed in the barn can’t hurt.
My weapons cache hasn't reached artillery..........yet.......
Neal Boortz used to have a column in the ATL Creative Loafing, back long ago before he was nationally syndicated. The column was titled SAWB, SAWB being Smart A##ed White Boy. Mayor Andy Young (yes, Carter’s UN ambassador, *that* Andy Young) had make an angry comment about SAWB’s, and Boortz gladly picked up the banner. Had t-shirts and coffee mugs made up, brought it up a lot, proclaimed himself as one, really ran with it.
Oh, and I guess the point to that, regarding your local conservative talk show hosts, is that being the token conservative voice in your town’s Creative Loafing can be a good starting point. Boortz has surely done well for himself.
