S&S is a DoD publication.

Well, sort of. They are an independent news organization.

They do receieve some non-appropriated subsidy funds, and are authorized by the DoD to be distributed and sold in military facilities.

Stars and Stripes is a Department of Defense-authorized daily newspaper distributed overseas for the U.S. military community. Editorially independent of interference from outside its own editorial chain-of-command, it provides commercially available U.S. and world news and objective staff-produced stories relevant to the military community in a balanced, fair, and accurate manner. By keeping its audience informed, Stars and Stripes enhances military readiness and better enables U.S. military personnel and their families stationed overseas to exercise their responsibilities of citizenship. — Revised DoD Directive 5122.11

Sort of???

“Stars and Stripes is a Department of Defense-authorized daily newspaper”

No “sort of” here.

This isn’t about Beaver. It’s about Barber. She should be shown the door by Gates.

This is a resurfacing of old news. ASY has been in someone’s crosshairs for years, the essence of this story has been posted here before.

Disclosure...I’m the president of an America Supports You homefront group.

“ASY has been in someone’s crosshairs for years.” A question then is why did S&S decide to do another story about Barber and ASY?

Without actually asking them, we'll not know the answer to that question. Allison is their boss. She didn't kill the story. I think there can be some conclusions drawn from that, if you wish.

But again, it's all speculation.

If there were indeed improprieties (or illegalities) in funding, the DOD IG would have been all over it by now, and we'd be hearing about an investigation rather than complaints from a functionary.

Note: IG’s move slowly.

December ‘07? I seem to remember the initial complaints coming to light in either late ‘05 or early ‘06.

The IG doesn’t move that slowly.

And, as for the NYT article stating that the editors of Stars and Stripes complaining about their editorial independence?

Right. If the paper were the International Herald Tribune or The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, perhaps. But Stars & Stripes is a DoD publication.

I’m sorry, but all I see here is repeated attempts to besmirch a political appointee with no appreciable response from the appropriate authorities.

It’s like Janet Napolitano (AZ Gov.) asking the FBI to investigate the Maricopa County (AZ) Sheriff for doing his job. That letter is going nowhere, as well, but she managed to cast aspersions on the Sheriff by making the ‘complaint’ public. She even had people on this board convinced the Sheriff was under investigation when nothing of the sort had ever been said.

Actually, it sounds about right. The recent USAF Thunderbirds IG took more that 2 years. (Feb ‘06 - Apr ‘08)

Y’know, I started to take an excerpt out of your link to show how you’re comparing apples and oranges, when it struck me.

Nothing I say is going to dissuade you of your conviction that the UnderSecretary needs to go.

So be it. We each have opinions, and we disagree.

OBTW - by way of disclosure - I showed you mine. Where’s yours?

Ah.... she’s not an Undersecretary, nor is she an Assistant Secretary. She’s a Deputy Assistant Secretary (way down on the DoD food chain)

Nothing is going to dissuade me? Sure. Exoneration by the IG would be a good start.

On a more philosophical bend, ASY seems to be in direct competition with the USO. Why does the government need to create a program and use recources for something the private sector can do better and has done well for years? It’s seems very self serving on DoD’s part.

By way of disclosure: To quote from the “Rally Around the Flagg, Boys” MASH script: “He’s got us, guys, we might as well confess. I’m Joe Stalin. Mao Tse-Tung, Marshall Tito, and, of course, you already know Lenin. What can I say, we couldn’t get a room in the Kremlin.”
