Obama as Chamberlain (Neville, not Wilt) - Photoshop

So, Dubya goes before the Israel Knesset for their 60th Anniversary and criticizes appeasement:

"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along," the President said to the country's legislative body, "We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is –- the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
A common sense statement, right? Prior to WWII, Neville Chamberlain got Hitler to sign a piece of paper, then announced that he had achieved "peace in our time." History 101 showed all of us, regardless if we have a D or an R after our name, that appeasement doesn't work.

Unsurprisingly, Barack Obama freaked out.
"It is sad that President Bush would use a speech to the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence to launch a false political attack. It is time to turn the page on eight years of policies that have strengthened Iran and failed to secure America or our ally Israel. Instead of tough talk and no action, we need to do what Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan did and use all elements of American power — including tough, principled, and direct diplomacy - to pressure countries like Iran and Syria. George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President's extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel."
Uh, dude? If you are not an appeaser, why on earth do you take it personally when Bush criticizes appeasers?

I've done plenty of PR work in my time, senator. Although you shouldn't have released a statement at all, here's how you should have handled a press question about Bush's comments:
"One thing all Americans agree on is that appeasement doesn't work. As president, I will engage in tough, principled, and direct diplomacy just like Kennedy, Nixon and Reagan before me. And of course, no American president will engage with terrorists, least of all those who seek to destroy our stalwart ally, Israel. I look forward to celebrating the 65th anniversary of Israel's independence."
That was easy, wasn't it? If Bush gave a speech about drug dealers, would you release a statement saying, "how DARE you insult me!"? Of course not; you're aren't a drug dealer. So if you really aren't an appeaser, you shouldn't have willingly identified yourself with that group.

You'll be headed for McGovern territory if you keep this up, kid.

Chamberlain never used articulate words like “uhh” and “y’know”.

Again, Bush’s hypocrisy is showing:

If it’s wrong to talk with terrorist states, why is his administration talking with North Korea?

Is it because Bush believes “some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along”?

Precisely.

Hopefully, the GOP will respond with two questions for Obama:

Which part of the speech does he think applied to him?

Which part does he disagree with?

Neville Chamberlain got Hitler figured out less than one year after Munich when he declared war for the invasion of Poland. He also had the grace and dignity to step aside for Winston Churchill and shut up.

You have to remember that Obama is a member of the Liberal Party and Chamberlain was a member of the Conservative Party.

And John McCain is a member of the ______________ Party.

Ten Questions to Ask the Dems About Appeasement‏ I wrote Blitzer a note after he had Kerry on to rip W. Wolf, 1) I appreciate you throwing McCain’s quotes at Kerry in an effort to be fair and balanced but if all the hubbub is about the questions posed in Bush’s speech, how about at least asking the indignant Dems to answer the actual questions that spurred them to launch their coordinated attack in defense of appeasement? 2) Is it foolish delusion to claim that talking with terrorists will result in peace? 3) Should we negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along? 4) Aren‘t you saying like that Senator back in 1939 that ‘Lord, if only I could talk to Ahmadinejad, all of this might be avoided’? 5) Isn’t this really the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history? 6) Aren’t you defending the failed strategy of appeasement and thinking that if you go and talk with Ahmadinejad that they’ll forget their evil ways and learn to love us? 7) What makes you think they would treat a future president any better than they did Jimmy Carter? 8) When one looks at how they use the spectacle of a U.N. address to excoriate us, wouldn’t they similarly use the spectacle of ‘talks’ as a sign of legitimacy and an opportunity to offer no peaceful conciliation but rather a tool to justify the path they‘ve chosen? 9) If you speak with Iran, what demands would you make of them and what are you willing to compromise to get a deal? 10) To which kinds of terrorists would you talk and to which would you not?
