JAKARTA (AFP) - Israel is carrying out "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians, a top Indonesian politician said Wednesday in the lead up to celebrations and protests marking the Jewish state's 60th anniversary.
"There is nearly no day without the blood of innocent people being spilled in Palestine," Agung Laksono, the speaker of Indonesia's parliament, told an international anti-Zionist conference here marking the anniversary.
"Israeli soldiers, in a planned manner, murder and destroy the Palestinians. Villages are bombed, homes are destroyed and their fields and burned," he said.
"We condemn the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Israel."
Laksono delivered the opening speech at the conference after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono withdrew his participation. A spokesman for the president could not be reached for comment.
While many Israelis see Thursday's anniversary as a celebration of nationhood, many Palestinians and their supporters are commemorating the date of Israel's 1948 creation as the Naqba or "catastrophe".
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation and has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian struggle for nationhood. It has no diplomatic relations with Israel.
At the same time it has taken an active interest in playing a greater role in Middle East peace efforts. The country has had peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon since 2006.
What else would a politician from Indonesia say abut Israel?
No wonder the top levels in their society are able to be so larcenous and double-dealing.

Perhaps Obama can explainthat we should overlook these "religious" outbursts, after all he's cited his upbringing amongst Muslims in Indonesia as a foreign policy asset, and he's got experience with a racist Pastor.
Indonesians know a thing or two about “ethnic cleansing”. They tried to wipe out Sumatrans, not too long ago.
There are more Arabs in Israel than Jews in Indonesia.
The Arab population in the region has risen relentlessly for decades. The Israelis must be the most incompetent ethnic cleansers in history.
If you mean that anyone firing rockets into Israel is being eliminated, you are correct.

Yep, we need to remember the Palestinians are where they are because all their “good Muslim brothers” refused to give them anywhere to live years ago. Because you see, they are only a tool being implemented to rid the Mid East of the “hated Jew”. If Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, or the filthy rich Saudi’s were true “Muslim brothers”, they would slice off a sliver or two of their land for the freeloaders.
Agung Laksono is an example of someone who is in major need of a high colonic for his brain.
