Computer Verified, Chavez Implicated

Terrorism: Interpol's authentication of FARC computer data Thursday leaves little doubt about Venezuela's bid to destabilize Colombia. So should the U.S. declare it a terror sponsor and stop buying its oil? Or do nothing?

The Interpol examination confirmed that the contents of three FARC computer laptops, three USB thumb drives and two hard disks, recovered from the camp of FARC chieftain Raul Reyes after a March 1 raid, were authentic.

Many of the 37,872 files implicated Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez as a supporter of the FARC Marxist narcoterrorists who have been trying to overthrow Colombia's government since 1966.

A nervous Chavez had dismissed the data as forged, so Interpol's report, which explicitly found "no evidence that user files were created, modified or deleted," now leaves him without an alibi.

It also raises the question of what the U.S. should do about it.

Verified terror sponsorship makes Venezuela eligible to join the ranks of isolated rogue states like Syria and Iran, which the U.S. lists as state sponsors of terror. If so, the U.S. would be required to quit buying oil from a major supplier that provides 12% of U.S. imports at a time when consumers are paying $4 a gallon at the pump.

Obviously, it's a dilemma for U.S. policymakers as they face calls from Congress members, such as Florida's Rep. Connie Mack, to declare the obvious about Chavez. But it can be sorted out a few ways.

First, the U.S. can do nothing, with no impact on oil imports. That would leave the perception of Chavez as a nuisance, nothing more.

Chavez is a liberal, and he'll do what liberals always do - repeat the lie louder and louder and do it publicly and people will start to believe it.

Chavez has been at war with Colombia since the day he took office.

This isn’t news, but its news that its so well documented.

But since the beginning, he has had FARC in his inner circle. He has been delivering weapons to them. Money. Air support. He has let them use Venezuela as their secure rear base. They travel on Venezuelan passports, their leaders live in Caracas. Their high value hostages are held on Venezuelan soil. Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry defends them diplomatically.

Chavez is FARC. The day he took office, FARC captured Venezuela.
