Racial Politics Inside the Democratic Ranks [Mike Gallagher]
Townhall ^ | May 16, 2008 | Mike Gallagher

It had to be one of the single dumbest questions ever asked in the history of network television.

Diane Sawyer was chatting up James Carville, the irascible Clinton loyalist, about the West Virginia Democrat primary. She turned to Mr. Carville and, with a glint in her eye, asked something that almost caused him to fall flat out of his cushy 'Good Morning America' chair. At least I know I certainly would have keeled over had I been asked the same thing.

Referring to the much-reported exit polling in West Virginia that suggested that one out of five Clinton voters said that race was definitely a factor in their decision, Ms. Sawyer, who makes approximately 12 million dollars a year to ask questions on ABC-TV, said the following: "...should Sen. Clinton say she is rejecting the votes of anyone who votes based in any way on color of skin?"

I swear to you that Carville looked at her as if she had just suggested that a tiny alien creature was living in her left high-heeled shoe.

I'm glad that in the middle of his rambling, stumbling answer to possibly the goofiest question he's ever received, he managed to sheepishly point out that there were "probably a few black voters who have voted for Sen. Obama because of race as well."

A "few"? A FEW???

Surely Carville has seen the same data we all have regarding the racial component of Democrats who have cast votes for Obama and Sen. Clinton. And a die-hard liberal Dem like James Carville isn't about to admit on national TV what has turned into the not-so-secret secret of this Democrat primary season: black Democrats are overwhelmingly voting for the black candidate.

The story has been revealed state after state: 92% of the black vote in Mississippi for Obama; 91% of the black vote in Wisconsin for him; 84% of blacks went for Obama in Maryland; 87% in Ohio; and on and on.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Clinton captured 55% of the white vote in Texas; 64% of white voters in Ohio; and 66% in New Jersey, just to name a few. So while Sen. Clinton has garnered a fairly even percentage of white and black voters, blacks are simply voting in overwhelming percentages for Sen. Obama.

In a contest between two Democrat candidates with nearly indistinguishable policies, this is astoundingly alarming.

If Diane Sawyer wasn't so hell-bent on trying to make the case that white West Virginia voters were a bunch of bigots, she might have asked the exact same question of Sen. Obama and his supporters. The only problem with that scenario is that if Obama had to reject voters who selected him based "in any way" on race, he wouldn't have anyone left.

The mainstream media can't seem to ever cover the issue of race fairly. To realize that dopes like Diane Sawyer think they have a "gotcha" moment by referring to one out of five white voters in one small state while ignoring the giant elephant in the room of nearly 100% of blacks voting for Barack Obama everywhere else is preposterous.

It would be nice to believe that black Democrats all believe that Sen. Obama is truly the best person for the job. But if that were true, what would the media be saying if white voters were voting for Mrs. Clinton with such giant percentages? The answer is easy: the press would be denouncing a racist white America, a hate-filled electorate of despicable bigots who would dare to vote for someone solely on the color of their skin.

If I announced on my radio show that the only reason I'm voting for John McCain is because he's a white man, I can't imagine I'd have much of a career remaining. Unless my career included appearing at conventions of skinheads and Ku Klux Klansmen.

But once again, biased blacks get a pass. Very few people have the intestinal fortitude to admit that it's a crying shame that so many voters are blindly supporting someone for president because of his skin color. It would be the ultimate act of political incorrectness to point this out. Instead, whites in West Virginia -- and elsewhere -- are demonized as non-educated, racist morons.

It's easy to blame white Americans for just about every single racial conflict in America. But in doing so, we're not making much progress in terms of race relations.

Show me black Democrats who will vote for a candidate based on real qualifications and we'll be getting somewhere.

“...dopes like Diane Sawyer”....

Bingo! Sawyer is dope. Always has been.

Good article! I hope it gets back to Sawyer. (And the media.)

The fact that black voters are voting for someone who is part black really can't be defined as racism since he would be the first president with that ancestry. Therefore, the argument that blacks are racist for voting for Obama isn't going to get traction even if some of those voters happen to be racist. You could call them unpatriotic, Marxist, terrorist enablers but that's different than call them racists.

What's more important is the media's negative reaction to WV voters' exit polling stating that race played a factor.

First, these are Appalachian people, many of whom have seen more hardship than many African Americans will ever encounter. Second, Obama insulted these people calling them bitter, xenophobic, etc. Third, the fact that Obama is of black ancestry and is putting down these voters raises fears of Obama's own potential xenophobia and racism.

So, Obama's race would be very relevant in this case. They can hardly expect the deep racism from a white towards them that might lurk in Obama's heart, which is filled with loyalty to Rev. Wright and disdain for his own white grandmother because she feared for her own safety.

I think they worry about their own.

For all the talk about race in the Democrat primaries, there's been almost no talk about racial issues. Have Obama or Hillary been asked their views on Reparations? Have they been asked about Affirmative Action? Have they been asked about how illegal immigration hurts workers, Black workers most of all?

Of course, McCain won't ask his friends, his fellow Senators such offensive questions, but that shouldn't stop the rest of us.

Did Americans already vote for a black president?

“...these are Appalachian people, many of whom have seen more hardship than many African Americans will ever encounter.”

And until an election comes around they are invisible. No affirmative action for Appalachia.

Too bad there isn’t a Republican Party anywhere that has the gonads to step up to those evil white WV or any other state white voters and point out how unappreciated they are by their fellow (or is it brother?) democraps.

If every home had a lovely little room off the kitchen where you could make your own psychopharmaceuticals, Diane Sawyer would be Martha Stewart.

Thinking about McCain and reparations at the same time...well, I just can’t.

I was looking up the word “dumbassed” in my Funk&Wagnall dictionary and Diane Sawyer’s picture was shown in 4 color print! That woman is about 4 bricks shy of a full load.

What I should have said is that it wouldn’t be racist for blacks to vote for Obama because of his skin color because he is the first African-American with dark skin with a legitimate shot at becoming president.
