NEWPORT NEWS - When owner Jeffrey Thompson found signs Sunday of a break-in at his military surplus store in Newport News, he decided to sleep at work with his gun nearby and catch the thieves red-handed.
Early Thursday morning his long nights at the office paid off when Thompson confronted three burglars.
He was surprised to find out later that the men were members of Security Forces at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton.

Oops. Bad idea, guys.
Sounds like a DD in the making to me. Scumbags
Big time double jeapardy time.
Civil conviction, probation and slap on the wrist.
Court Marshall, say hello Leavenworth.
Probably.
But, but, you can always trust the police! They’re our friends, right? Why these Airheads (I mean Airmen;) were probably just investigating a burglary, or they got lost and figured they’d open up the donut shop a little early and bake a few donuts, or, uh, something or other!;)
Could be civilian security not SPs. Kirtland AFB gate guards are civilians, working with AF SP’s.
These are all A1C's...
....I got a question....does the “castle doctrine” apply to your store?.... ie if this store owner had fired due to the confusion of being suddenly awakened could he have been charged?
Oh, I expect that a DD will be the least of their worries. Lets try a court marshall followed by a nice stint at Leavenworth, with a DD as a parting kick in the rear...
Thanks for the update.
From the article: "All three hold the rank of Airman 1st Class."
Not for long. Like the man said, Leavenworth may be in their future.
The Castle Doctrine applies to property. The store was on his property, thus applies.
The article says all three “hold the rank of Airman 1st Class.” So I assume they’re regular USAF.
How friggin’ stupid do you have to be to do something like this? The first guy is damn lucky the owner didn’t have a very itchy trigger finger.

That depends on how the law is written in your State. Most of the laws I've seen have language such as "in one's home or in any other place where one has a right to be". In that case, then a castle doctrine law would cover a storeowner in his own shop. (In fact, such language is very liberal, in the true sense of the word, as it applies outside one's home or business.) Others specify only in the home.
Of course, I'm not an attorney so YMMV.
Unlikely. The vast majority of the time, such cases are either turned over to the military for prosecution, or the military will discharge and turn over to civil authorities.
What they were doing was bad but sad that it is believed they were stealing paint ball supplies. Kind of like high school shoplifters.
“Thompson believes they broke in to steal equipment for Airsoft,a combat sport similar to Paintball...”Idiots.They’re fortunate the owner didn’t shoot first and ask questions later.Didn’t these young men stop to consider the consequences of getting caught?Military careers are finished, dishonorable discharges, criminal records....and all this for paintball supplies?
Well, it is pretty obvious that this is Bush's fault. Between the sour economy, PTSD and his lack of support for veteran's benefits, what were this brave young men to do? /s
Who is Court Marshall? And why would he be going to Leavenworth?
the 3 stooges probably thought the Airsoft guns were real.
Who reads the article? That’s downright anti-FR. ;)
Isn't he the great-uncle and namesake of Marshall Law?
LOL.”Well it’s pretty obvious this is Busch’s fault/sarc.”Maybe not as sarcastic as you think.Talk about coincidence....Off topic, but i’m currently reading B.Golbergs-”Crazies To The Left Of Me,Wimps To The Right”(correct title?).Great book-he goes into detail re:BDS(Bush Derangement Syndrome)aka mental illness,an irrational obsessive hatred of GW(and conservatives in general)by libs.Later:)
Lessen the confusion, learn the proper lingo. It is Court-Martial or plural Courts-Martial where the military put their own on trial and here in the US the 'bible' is UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). You know, it was that thing that Harmon Rabb was ragging on when he was doing all those things as a Navy JAG.
Well I am sure OSI will solve some base theft as well now that they have a hint as too what and or when these guys were working.
Doom on em .....they disgrace their service, their fellow SFS Airmen and their families. Idiots !
Dishonorable discharge, reduction too E1 and escorted out the back gate “AFTER” the local courts are done with em and found guilty by a jury or judge .....
The difference is that, They weren’t in high school, they weren’t shoplifting, and they’re are burglars.
The “bad, sad” part is true.
Never watched JAG and haven't been under the UCMJ jurisdiction since 94.
Never steal an Airsoft gun to bring to a gunfight.
I’m slinking away with my head down in shame.
A DD might not be a slam dunk, but a BCD certainly is...
the infowarrior
Go ahead and read the story.
I'd rather make a fool of myself. It takes less effort. :)
