The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States rose by 16 this week to 1,862. Of the rigs running nationwide, 1,471 were exploring for natural gas and 381 for oil, Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. reported Friday. Ten were listed as miscellaneous. A year ago, the rig count stood at 1,744. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas added 13 rigs, while California, Wyoming and Alaska each added two and Colorado added one rig. Oklahoma lost five rigs, Louisiana lost one and New Mexico was unchanged. Baker Hughes has tracked rig counts since 1944. The tally peaked at 4,530 in 1981, during the height of the oil boom. The industry posted several record lows in 1999, bottoming out at 488.

Meanwhile, the Cubans and Chinese are drilling for oil just 45 miles off the coast of Miami. They are stealing our oil, and giving us their oil slicks. Good going, Democrats.

If Bubba hadn’t vetoed the ANWR drilling project in 1996, we’e be getting a million barrels a day from there now.

Sorry, moonbat leftist watermelons won’t let us build any. I was at an alternative energy website a few minutes ago and the question was about using nuclear energy instead of coal or natural gas for electricity. You know, that global warming / green house gasses thingy. The whackos went nuts............

Want to buy a refinery? 220,000 barrels per day, stable market for several petroleum products.

I cannot help but wonder how the US can prevent a US company from drilling in international waters. Can someone please explain that to me?

The US claims an economic zone up to 200 miles off its coast. Since Cuba is only 90 miles off, we recognize up to 45 miles there. So the Cubans are drilling 45 miles off Miami, but US companies cannot.

New rigs are all well and good, but what about new refineries?

There are billions being invested in refineries upgrades and improvements between Texas City and New Orleans that I know of.

There is no need for more refineries. Refining capacity is adequate in the US to meet the need.

Why would you think that we need more?

The government can't, but international waters are usually quite deep, which drives up the cost significantly.

Kerr-McGee pioneered Deep water Drilling Spars. It is a cool technology. What the US companies cannot do is drill in other nations' territorial waters.

I think I read in the Wall St. Journal that Petrobras (the national oil company of Brazil) has leased 80% of the world’s rigs to use in a recent discovery thus driving up the costs of rig leases elsewhere.
