The leader of the Democratic National Committee came to Rochester Thursday night, but the "elephant in the room" went ignored.
Howard Dean helped raise money for Congressional candidate Eric Massa and spoke at the Monroe County Democratic Committees Convention.
However, many Democrats wanting to hear Dean talk about party unity didn't get as much as they were hoping for.
Dean spent a great deal of his time at the podium focusing on President Bush and John McCain.
"Republicans want change too, and they're not going to get it with John McCain, who means four more years of George W. Bush," he said.
Dean also pushed for volunteer and fundraising support for local candidates.
The former presidential hopeful, touched only briefly on the bitter rivalry playing out on the campaign trail.
"Both candidates think I'm favoring the other one, which I suppose is like being the referee at the Syracuse UCONN games. But, the truth is from looking outside at the point of view of the party this has been an unbelievable campaign season," he said.
But, the need for party unity wasn't completely lost at this event. Local Democratic leaders are already talking the party talk.
Monroe County Democratic Chair Joe Morelle said, "We're going to unite behind our Democratic candidate whether that's Senator Obama or Senator Clinton and we're going to make sure there's a democrat in the White House."
Dean also did not comment on John Edward's endorsement of Barack Obama.
