Global warming may increase prevalence of kidney stones disease

Washington, May 15 (ANI): Global warming may lead to an increase in kidney stones disease, says a new study.

Dehydration has been linked to stone disease, mainly in warmer climates, and global warming will worsen this effect, according to the researchers.

As a result, the prevalence of stone disease may increase, along with the costs of treating the condition.

Using published data to determine the temperature-dependence of stone disease, researchers applied predictions of temperature increase to determine the impact of global warming on the incidence and cost of stone disease in the United States.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates a 1-20 C increase in temperature by 2050 for much of the United States. These findings place a greater significance on the harmful effects of global warming, an ongoing economic and political issue.

The southern United States is considered the stone belt because these states have higher incidences of kidney stones. Rising global temperatures could expand this region; the fraction of the U.S. population living in high-risk stone zones is predicted to grow from 40 percent in 2000 to 50 percent by 2050.

This could lead to an increase of one to two million lifetime cases of stone disease. The impact of climate-related changes in stone disease will be non-uniformly distributed and likely concentrated in the southern half of the country (linear model) or upper Midwest (non-linear model).

The cost associated with treating stone disease could climb as high as one 1 billion dollars annually by 2050, representing a 10-20 percent increase over present-day estimates.

The study was presented at the 103rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association. (ANI)

Give me a freekin break!

Actually, kidney stones run in my family--not good at all. My poor dad is a prolific stone maker. My theory on it: They tell you to drink a lake as part of the treatment, but I think that's part of the problem. We're sitting on a limestone bed and I wonder if it's partly due to an inability to process the minerals in the water that causes the problem in the first place.

Good point. We have very few Limestone deposits north of south GA. and Florida here in the south. That would negate thier moving south problem to a point.

This is all so man-bear-pig-ish. Back in the period before global warming (1990)...I never had hemorrhoids...and now? I’m thinking my occassional bout of hemorrhoids now has to do with global warming. The thing I’m really worried about....if we all start to get hemorrhoids....then we all start buying massive amounts of Preparation H...and then they start having shortages. You know its the Arabs who own Preparation H and they will just try to control it and force the price up to $30 a tube. And with global warming at our front door....I’m fearful of having to spend $60 a month for my dose of Preparation H...to help me make it through Global Warming. Maybe...just maybe....some farmers out in Iowa can make a alternate to Preparation H, from corn oil....and help us make it through this difficult period?

Given that ocean temperatures are regarded as a major indicator of global warming activity, the slight decrease in ocean temperatures indicated by the Argo System oceanic temperature probes over the past several years is an indicator that AGW is a hoax.

This is getting beyond the scope of ridiculous now... It seems like scientists who believe in Gorebull Warming will try anything and everything to associate themselves with this latest “fad” in perhaps a lame attempt to get more recognition for their work (read to inflate their ego...).

What costs? All my doctors have ever done is tell me to wait them out, as they do not want to take any action unless it can be determined that the stones cannot pass on their own.

I will admit, though, that kidney stones are probably the single worst pain I have ever, or could ever, experience. I never knew that it was possible to be phyiscally ill from pain until I went through that the first time. It can turn a very tough person into a squalling baby.

One of my big problems is that I injured my back pretty severely while on active duty, so it’s hard to distinguish between that pain and the onset of the pain from the stones. I think my physical limitations probably prevent me from following the suggestions on that site, but I will pass it along to others that I know, as it sounds logical.

Incidentally, I already pop pain pills like Dr. House (and the same type of pills as well), from the regular pain, so one of my professors last year said he thought I was Dr. House, without the people skills.... ;-)

What we need is a collection of these and other BS articles to do a study and build a case that the majority of scientists are truly dumbasses that will do and or say anything for a cheap sensational headline!!

Twenty degrees Celcius?? That's 36 freakin' degrees in Fahrenheit. That's got to be the most widely exaggerated number I've ever seen claimed for AGW.

We have very few Limestone deposits north of south GA. and Florida here in the south. The vast thinly soiled limestone substrate of North Georgia becomes most obvious when it rises to a point called Stone Mountain.

Stone mountain is granite. If it were limestone it would not be here anymore. It was formed as an underground chamber of magma that cooled slowly, forming large crystals, typical of granite. We have a granite quarry in my county that is an extension of the Stone Mountain formation. I could be missing some smaller formations in north Georgia that may be limestone, but here in the ATL area I am not aware of anyone on well water that has hard water.

I stand very corrected.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock. It is composed mostly of calcium carbonate and is formed in layers of sediment. Most limestones are composed of the tiny skeletons of marine invertebrates, such as snails and trilobites from millions of years ago. Many of these “fossils” can be seen in limestone with the naked eye.

Limestone is generally cream or white, but if it contains some iron oxide colors can vary to brown, yellow, or red. If limestone contains carbon, it can be gray, black, or in some cases even blue. Minor amounts of silica, feldspar, pyrite, and clay may also be present.

Granite is an igneous rock that is formed by magma (hot liquid rock) that has cooled under pressure deep within the earth. It is extremely hard and heat resistant, and is therefore completely suited to worktops. You can cut food items directly on the worktop surface as it almost impossible to cut or damage with a conventional kitchen knife. You can also take dishes directly out of the oven and set them on a granite worktop, as it is not susceptible to cooking heat. Granite has a glass-like surface and is virtually non-porous which makes it stain resistant. The stone is composed of quartz, feldspars, mica, hornblende, and a small amount of other minerals.

From my youth I always understood that granite was limestone.
