In the US we are far removed from those times. So we can easily call it a fairy tale. Yet, it was happy for the wives and for David.
It is life. Life is a big package. Look for the good.
How do you know? I’d personally assume being treated as one of a mass of property wasn’t marriage nor happy. Quiet ugly actually.
BTW, I’ve met women who were wives #2 & #3.....not happy.
BTW, not in any fairy tales of any culture does a princess dream of becoming #2 in the eyes of the prince.
But just think of all the wash you are going to be doing & cooking etc. Do you really want to be Wendy to a couple of Peter Pans? lmao not me!
But how well does each us know the back of our hand? We think that since we CAN look at it easily, and even have looked it over now and then, that we know it well. Yet -- I tell you this for certain -- if your look over your own hand closely with diligence and honesty each time you will see something new, or you will at least imagine -- see in your mind's eye -- some new way of interpreting what you see.
A new hair there, grey maybe, a blemish comes, a blemish goes, a white spot under a fingernail (leukonychia) ... always something going on even in the tiniest of places!
So it is this ... What do you want to see? Your will, your desires, your preset notions all change what you see from what others will see of the same seen thing.
I have met children of wifes after the first ... happy they and happy their mothers so they said. As a Freeper, surely you know that anecdotes do not make statistics.
David's life was ups and downs -- and yet at all times, happy. That is his own words -- tested, tried, tired, exhausted -- but considering all things as he did, David knew happiness. Happiness is a turn of mind, a set to the spirit.
Genesis 16
1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.
2 So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3 After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.
4 He went in to Hagar, and she conceived;
And in the very next chapter, God makes the Abrahamic covenant with Abraham!
Genesis 17
1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.
2 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly."
3 Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
4 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
5 "No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.
6 "I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you.
7 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
I'd say that is about as much approval as you can get!
This is the “David killed the husband of another man so he could have his wife” David? Wow! What an awful example of ‘happy in polygamy’....
Erm, ah....OK, you had I have very different views of what a good person is, much less a ‘happy’ one.
So I stand by what I say....I don’t see happy in that lifestyle (for those with brains and a love of freedom).
Look for the good.
It’s in the Bible and no, it’s hard to take a positive spin on murder, adultery and envy.
I’ll just look for reality, thankyouverymuch.
Perhaps the prophet’s words were meant to convey to David exactly what his PR problem was, for David was not murderer, nor adulterer, and he was not a man driven by envy.
Joan of Arc?

Common sense that won’t stand up to the ignorant around here who think the definition of a polygamy is a “barbaric practice limited to Fundamentalist Mormons and Muslims, defined by underage marriages, child abuse, incest, statutory rape, and welfare fraud” Few will bother to actually research the practice and find that it spans many countries, many religions, (and those who aren’t religious), many income brackets, education levels, and personalities.. that would take too much work.. some would rather operate as the liberals do, believing sound bites and anti-polygamy propaganda, in order to further their own agendas. Most are women who are only “thinking of the children” and who are too insecure to ever imagine sharing their husband with another woman.
